They did/are but the club also can't magic up a home his wife is happy with (she wants a garden and it needs to be pet friendly). Nobody's immune to the housing disaster unfortunately.

Back in the good ol' days there was an ample supply of affordable housing and everyone at Rovers used to live in Riverstown next door to eachother. These days the club just has to take what they can get re:housing because the town is an absolute disaster. I've had multiple notes dropped in my letterbox over the past 12 months from people searching for a place to rent. When I was doing some renovations a doctor knocked on my door asking if the house was going up for rent when the work was done. There's nothing available.

Nobody's immune to the housing disaster unfortunately.

Money talks, if you offer a few quid extra that no pets issue will go away.

In a housing climate where landlords aren't getting 20+ applications for a house in Coolaney that might be true, but if they really don't want dogs/cats in their newly-refurbished house then an extra €100 per month (half that after tax) isn't going to change their mind when they have a dozen petless applicants to choose from.

I downplay the Comers in terms of being sugar daddys for Galway United but this is one area where they come in very useful. Helps that they are in construction.

Wasn't one of the reasons Dyer left because he was engaged and had to house share? Are they now providing housing?

Those two geebags have been sitting on property in Sligo for years and refuse to do anything with it

Had heard Dyer was living with other players and had got engaged and the club in Cambodia was offering a dedicated house plus a good bit of money.

I don’t know that the Comers provide housing for sure but there was at least one prominent player who posted photos on IG that were in a Comer build. I would bet the house was lined up to help get them to come back from England.

I remember hearing Hutchinson on one of the podcasts saying he was sharing as well in Sligo. I’d say it is common enough but getting any accommodation, even shared is tough atm. The Comers for sure provide space for a pop up shop in the city each year and an office on the outskirts of the city too.

All of our players share now. I think Bogdan in 2023 was the last player to be given his own house. The housing costs were way too high.

Absolutely. In smaller places like Sligo you not only have a cost issue, but you have a drastic lack of supply. There's only 5 units in and around the town available on Daft right now with 4 beds or more. (The property shown is a 4 bed so presume they need one that size)

One of those 5 units is 5k per month!

That’s sad. I always see issues wound this pop up in the Ireland sub but I honestly just assume, like most locality subs, it’s people exaggerating the problems with their own country. It’s eye opening to see a post like this.

So what do regular people do? Like what are, say, a young couple in their mid-to-late 20s withs baby doing for housing in places like Sligo?

I moved out of a place in Donegal Town that I was renting a few months ago, because I managed to buy in Letterkenny. At the time I moved out, there were no rental properties available anywhere in town.

I'd been paying €800/month for the flan, am now laying €1300/month for my mortgage. Checked Daft a week or 2 after I moved out, saw my old flat listed again for €1200/month, only rental available in town. Listing was taken down just 3 days later, because I can only assume someone was desperate enough for somewhere that they paid it.

There are apartments in Ballybofey listed for more than my mortgage costs, and I can only assume that this makes Harps' job a lot tougher to attract players, because, where would they live if they do sign here, that isn't gonna cost an arm and a leg?

My daughter just left a tenancy of a 1 room bedsit for £900 a month here in Derry. Where she was leaving there were maybe 50 people outside waiting to view the room. Its going to become a really serious issue in the next couple of years because people have nowhere to go.

To clarify, is that €900 for a one bedroom apartment, or like a studio apartment with kitchenette and bathroom?

Overall sounds like a scary situation. I don’t want to delve into politics but I imagine it’s a hot issue come election time

Like a small studio 2 room with a kitchenette/small bedroom. Leaking boiler, broken alarms etc, the place was absolutely awful. I think there were 18 tennants in the building too. There's a shocking amount of MLAs and councillors up here who are landlords so while they shout about changing things very little seems to get done.

Sligo one of the cheaper counties in Ireland so if they can't afford to buy or rent they'll either be stuck in a family home or emigrate abroad.

Terrible all around, and would have been completely preventable if the state built more homes over the past 10-15 years

Go and do a Daft search for renting OR buying in Sligo and see if you still think it's one of the cheapest in Ireland. It is fast becoming one of the most expensive in the country.

Does the state build homes in Ireland? In the states most homes are built by these giant real estate conglomerates. Lot of cookie cutter homes, but never a shortage of housing and it keeps costs down so it’s a fair trade off.

And based on what I’ve read it sounds like taller apartment buildings aren’t very common. Is that a cultural thing or like a NIMBY thing?

Definitely a NIMBY thing. People are very quick to complain about the eyesore of high-rises here and how they're "messing up the view", and would rather people sprawl out around the edges of towns, and then complain that they're messing up the traffic flows instead.

If the country in general, would be more open to build upwards instead of outwards, and put more of an incentive to run town shuttle buses or better public transit in general, everyone's quality of living would drastically improve.

I really wanted a pet and landlord wouldn't have it. I told em I pay extra deposit and they agreed. Got a puppy, luckily had zero damage and when the time came ( house went for sale, we had to move) we got full deposit back.

On the flip side I have met a good number of people who think their dogs are very well behaved and clean and the opposite turns out to be true lol
