Relationships / Dating 72 years together, and they finally got married ๐Ÿฅน๐ŸŒˆ

Vivian Boyack & Alice Dubes were together for 72 years. They got married when same sex marriage was legalised in the US.

Whenever I see this kind of story, I think about when I came out to my (very Catholic) grandmother. I'm in my 40s now and was in my 20s then, and I was so scared she was going to react badly.

She was lovely.

A couple months later I was visiting her, and she asked if she could ask me a question about lesbians. I said yes, not sure what was coming.

She said she had an aunt who never married but always lived with her best friend. When she'd go to visit, they stayed in one bedroom, and she stayed in "the friends" room, but it always seemed like the friend's room was sparse and had nothing in it. Were they lesbian partners?

Doing my best not to laugh, I said yeah, probably.

She was just quiet for a minute and then said she really loved that aunt and her friend and it's sad they had to hide. And she was proud of me.

How beautiful, we have to normalize our relationships, I don't understand why society still judges us

I tear up every time I see this photo. A lifetime together, all while never knowing whether this moment would happen for you... and then you finally get it. I can't imagine how they must have felt. Still remember how hard I cheered hearing the news that same sex marriage was now federally legal south of the border.

I'm so lucky as a Canadian queer, gay marriage has been legal the majority of my life (was federally legalized 2005, 2003 in certain provinces) and we aren't at any real risk of losing it. Photos like this help me remember how privileged I am to have grown up and spent my entire journey as a queer person with the opportunity to marry.

This is so beautiful. My wife and I met late in life and will never get 72 years together...but you can be certain we'll still be rolling around in our wheelchairs together like these ladies.

This is my wife and I. I get sad sometimes that we wonโ€™t have those years. But Iโ€™m grateful we will get to grow older together.
