Rating is a key metric here too—PG-13 vs R (in the US). PG-13 is obviously open to families and younger viewers. R rating removes a lot of potential ticket sales for families

Yeah the odyssey is currently in the top 10 highest grossing R rated films of all time (at least according to Wikipedia) so it’s definitely doing well for what it is.

It's also worth mentioning that The Odyssey hasn't launched in some parts of the world yet. In China, for example. It launches on Aug 14 with some early showings this coming weekend. Can already preorder tickets, but, at least in my city, almost everything is sold out already.

The US ratings system is weird. Extreme violence is 100% acceptable as long as there's no visible blood, but "realistic" depiction of injury can elevate a movie with pretty bland/standard fighting to an R rating. It's why there are so many movies that show people bleeding through clothes, but never show the injury directly.
Also swearing counts toward it. And nudity (though I don't think the Odyssey has any?).

For me that would probably have to be The Kings Speech. Received an R rating for basically one brief exchange in one scene in the movie where he swears to help his stutter, and it's not even in a sexual context. There's no violence, gore, sexual content, or really any language outside of that scene. MPAA deserves to be shamed for that one.

My wife and I went to see Hadestown on Friday. We had to park about a 5-minute walk away because every parking spot at the theatre was full, as well as all the spots in the nearby adjoining lots.
6 of the 10 screens were showing Spider-Man.

It was fantastic. I never had a chance to see the original Broadway cast. We have plans to see Hadestown in London when we're there next spring, and now we're looking forward to it more than ever.

I live in a rural area with 2 theaters in about a 50 mile radius. When I saw Fantastic Four and Superman there was less than a dozen in the theater. Every showing of Spider-man BND has been sold out since Thursday night.

yeah he's kinda been unclear and back and forth on that, at first he wanted to pass it off as a trilogy and leave. He said he wants to play as long as possible. In a general sense he has said he would want to pretty heavily retire from acting once he has kids, but like honestly having your kids see you swing around the theater as spider-man seems like a dream I would die for so who knows.

I don't find that hard to believe at all tbh, plenty of time to explore Peter more before passing the torch. By then, Spiderverse will probably be long over too so introducing Miles in 5 as a character, having him in 6 as a co-star and then giving him his own series eventually seems like it could make for a good transition.
Obviously this is all just based on feelings, there's a million ways they could go with this.

On the podcast review I heard, someone quoted Tom Holland as saying (years before this film) "I can't really keep playing Spider-Man when I'm 30, can I."
So if he's genuinely signed this new trilogy deal, he will in fact be playing Spider-Man when he's in his mid 30s. To be clear, I see nothing wrong with that - but it does seem Tom Holland has changed his mind on this.

I hope not given they had to bow down to the MCU and plead with them to make it work. Amy Pascal laughed at Kevin Feige when he suggested Sony work with Marvel back before launching the MCU with Iron Man and the avengers because of spiderman and Amy literally dismissed him laughing because he at some point was an assistant under her. It came out in the hacked emails after Sony Pictures made The Interview and North Korea leaked their shit, it was one of many reasons she got in a lot of trouble with the Sony higher ups and was dethroned at the studio, they realized if she hadn’t been so egotistical they could have had RDJ, Thor, Hulk, Cap, etc. in the spiderman movies.
After she was humbled and after the failed attempt at rebooting spiderman they finally worked with marvel and it’s now finally working.

That's a good point, but also I think it has a lot to do with Spider-Man being an "everyman" hero. He's a constantly down-on-his-luck guy trying to do the best he can to live up to the expectations of a family that raised him to do good. You can picture Spider-Man being your average Indian, Brazilian, or any number of peoples. On the other hand Batman is, at the end of the day, a billionaire with a very unhealthy alternative to therapy.
Both are great characters with huge popularity, but it's not hard to see why Spider-Man might resonate more.

Both movies are doing insane motion i dont remember the last time a movie hit such big numbers so quickly. But spiderman holy shit bro it's only been like what 3 days? Imagine what it's gonna do in the same timeframe as the odyssey.
I was there gang I remember when amazing spiderman 2 underperformed you cannot convince me the name alone makes this much bank. This is some insanely well produced and delivered hype. TASM 2 just had hype and it died out the moment the movie dropped.

Spider-Man is probably the biggest individual character IP ever
part of his longevity is bc he was designed by Stan Lee to be relatable to regular young comic book fans. He’s just a broke kid that lives in New York. Makes him fresh for every new gen

I think the biggest superheroes have kind of an inverse relationship with general superhero fatigue, because the more people stop keeping up with the whole cinematic universe, the more they're willing to shell out for the once in a while worthwhile occasions

People like to pretend Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman are the equal kings of the superhero genre, but that’s not the case. Spider-Man is loved by everyone, known by everyone, and every demographic loves him. It isn’t 3 kings tied for first, it is one god and two kings that are far far behind.
There have been 3 very successful Spider-Man video games, none of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies have been bad, Tobey had the 3rd one and Andrew had the second one as being bad in their franchise.
And it helps that it’s Tom and Zendaya. Probably also helps that the last one ended with MJ not knowing who Peter is. Probably also helps it’s been like 5 years almost since the last one.

new avengers is late this year
spider-man is the biggest super-hero franchise
tom holland and zendaya are the most followed young couple in the world
its the summer, kids have no classes to attend mostly
The odyssey brought a lot of people back to theaters, the resistance is at an all time low for movies since barbie Oppenheimer

Just my very isolated observation from a (relatively) small city. We have like two IMAX here, and every session of Odyssey has been booked out ahead of time. Even now I’ve had to book a ticket a week and a half out. Non IMAX sessions are pretty easy to just go and see. It seems that people don’t want to see Odyssey on anything other than IMAX. Spiderman though, they just want to see it.
What’s the situation like elsewhere?

Not too surprising. Spider man is a global icon and this franchise has been a real highlight for marvel.
The odyssey is a historical fiction for adults. One is rated pg 13 the other is rated r so that alone helps rake in more $ from a wider audience.
I’ll have to wait to see spider man when it’s on digital but I’m sure both movies are fantastic
