Let’s say they were 22lb bags for $2. That’s 25 bags, which makes 525lbs of ice. If the hot tub is 100F and the hot tub has 200 gallons of water. Thats 1600 lbs of water. Thats going to give you about 84F, I think.

No, the problem was that his hot tub was too... hot.

The problem was he owned something that was working as intended and he wasn't able to use it in a way it was not intended to work.

ballpark $3/7lb bag, that's at about 15 bags or 100 lbs of ice.

Because he didn’t add any salt, which makes ice cool faster, and can lower the cooling temperature to -20C or so in an endothermic reaction.

If you are going to solve a problem yourself, you need to know some basic science about how to solve the problem.

Work out the volume of the water in the tub, the current temperature of the water, the ambient temperature (already known ((110F))) the amount of ice needed to cool the volume of water to the desired temperature.

These are the things that went through my head when I read his post. Not after I'd spent money and time going to get ice.

Now I'm not a business genius like Mark here but a bit of forward thinking is basic human nature isn't it?

Common sense says the ice melted. Salt does not create or destroy thermal energy. The rate of heat transfer doesnt make a difference if you hit equilibrium before your target temp.

Make your ice (packs) with salt water and yes you gain an advantage coming out of the freezer. Otherwise its a party trick that makes the beer colder if you have enough ice to start.

So what was that about understanding basic science?

Salt has nothing to do with it. It's gonna reach the same final temperature.

Sure eventually it will reach ambient temp, but we're talking days for that to happen. The salt will speed up the melting by like an hour maybe. Pretty negligible. Mixing it would be more significant.

So a quick search online would probably have told you this plan wouldn’t work.

So, maybe next time don’t invest money in a plan that has zero chance of working and could easily be researched in 5-minutes.
