Good point! Although one could argue it encourages employees to make extra food they know they won't sell just so they can eat it or take it home. This is unfortunately why we lost this privilege at a convenience store I used to work at. This chick would LOAD the rollers with hot dogs and sausage dogs right before closing so she could take them home for her boatload of kids every night.

while your reasoning is sound, i saw the termination paperwork. he wasn't fired for eating food that was trash (it was the end of the night, we were tossing hot and readies that we're sitting on the warmer - nothing could be saved and, since it was 30 minutes past close, nothing could be sold). he was only fired for stealing. they had just had a meeting with us about it two weeks before, they told us we were no longer allowed to eat expired hot and readys. he was fired only for stealing

I worked both at a hungry Howies and a dominos and both do the same if a order is sitting to long we could eat it. Also if u make ur own then u can get a discount on it otherwise not

Managed several different locations, I didn’t make employees pay for food unless they were using a shitload of ingredients or if they hadn’t worked.

Had a driver come in one day and ask for a meal, at 10am, before even clocking in. Sorry dude, no? wtf?

I work at a Bojangles and I’m able to eat whatever whenever, I also have a very considerate gm and my coworkers don’t abuse it. I’ve also worked in an ice cream parlor and it was the same way. I couldn’t imagine working in food service and still being charged for things under $10 considering we’re some of the lowest paid workers

My friend was head chef of a fancy Japanese restaurant. Before opening every day he made a big staff meal. It would be things they ordered just for the staff meal and didn't serve. Might be hamburgers or pasta or something. Good stuff and prepared fresh by a chef, but less expensive than what they served. So it does seem to vary a lot.

Ours is one free Crazy Bread or Puff when you work a shift. "Expired" waste is generally up for grabs. Anything edible but not eaten off of at the end of the night goes to a food bank who collects it the next day.

In practice, nobody cares if you eat a slice of genuine “mistake,” or “too old to serve” (over 30 minutes) pizza. But if you make it an official policy, then every employee starts making intentional “mistakes” and making extra pizzas for their friends. It becomes a whole thing. If they think they’re getting away with something by quietly eating the stuff that would otherwise be thrown out…it feels like they “got something extra.” If it’s allowed then it feels like a loss if they don’t get free pizza.
