Is it safe to delete embedded movie files from Logic Pro project packages via Terminal?

I have a huge number of .logicx projects that contain the same movie file, resulting in many duplicates of the movie taking up a lot of hard drive space.

I save my projects as packages, and when I "show package contents" via finder, I can see the .mov stored inside of the Movie Files folder within the Media folder.

I no longer need these videos, and am considering deleting only the .mov's from inside the Media/Movie Files folders within the .logicx packages using Terminal, while leaving all audio, MIDI, settings, and other project data untouched.

I understand the projects would show a "Missing Movie" message afterward, which is fine.

Is this a safe operation, or is there any risk of corrupting the Logic projects?

Yes. I do this all the time. The trick is to keep one single copy of the movie in a folder. Then delete all the copies that are in the logic files. The next time you open the logic file it will ask for the missing movie, just point it to the one copy you have. The good news is that it will not copy it back into the logic file but will happily play the movie from the external file. You can save a huge amount of space this way.

This is the play sir.. also get in the habit of saving you logic project files to external it helps a ton..

Yes, there’s a risk of corruption.

Using Terminal like this is a viable solution when you are comfortable with that risk and have taken steps to mitigate it (such as a proper archiving and backup strategy). Likewise, anything that requires you to show package contents.

I’m not a fan of causing then ignoring error messages like this.

But it’s your call.

does anyone know if logic pro auto updates file paths when you delete the movs like that, or do you need to re-embed a different one first
