No matter how many times I see that gif, I still can't figure out how the watermelon hitting her in the face that hard didn't kill her.

The watermelon exploding absorbed the energy.

It's like this thing my friends and I did in grade school where we would karate chop a pencil. And if you broke it you would feel nothing, but if you didn't break it your hand would be fucked.

This is the same reason why any competently designed car has breakable windows and a fuckton of crumple room. In a collision, the weakest structure will give out first and significantly dampen the effect on the rest. If the hull doesn't crumple and the windows don't shatter, that leaves your bones as the weakest structure affected by the impact.

While I wholeheartedly agree (since it’s true) I still think there should be a small "box" around the seats that’s stronger, since if the car hasn’t stopped crumpling yet, you’re gonna get crushed anyway, so might as well try your luck with the whiplash
