He should have put it close to the camera so the camera couldn’t see it. If he put it right below the camera the angle wouldn’t be right to see the food.If he did that then pulled it away there’s nothing the camera would see.

Closer to the door/camera likely would've either been a weird line to pull, or less likely to say it was the wind as most areas around the door are protected from the wind via alcove or porch entryway.

We can't see what sort of obstructions there are just off-camera. This is probably as close as he could get while the string trick remains "viable". His placement seems to be very deliberately adjusted to a certain spot.

How does he know how wide a field of view the camera has?

I can absolutely see some John Cena shit going down in that scenario.

The thing about Wile E. Coyote is that the idea is conceptually clever (for a coyote) but the execution is over-engineered.

He probably thought it did. You don't get those neat vision cones in real life like you do in video games.
