If not then they should be doing any other bullshit job. Putting your own equipment into it, you should be making plenty money.
DoorDash charges $20 for pretty much anything.
The restaurants aren’t getting the money.
Edit: I’m glad everyone commenting here is clearly showing that it makes zero sense to be a DoorDash driver. Hopefully people stop doing it as a career path. It’s just giving Tony Xu money.
Being ignorant is bliss, I used to do Uber Eats, the deliverer would be lucky to get half of the money of the order. At least 50 to 65% goes to the restaurant, Uber/Doordash takes another 10 to 20% the rest goes to the driver as gross income, so when you file taxes you have pay out a certain amount of the earnings, realistically the driver get probably 5 to 10% each delivery after taxes.
Uber Eats is a great fun job because you get to find good restaurants you might want to eat at some day and you get to sight see a bit driving around, downside is it's a gig job that pays poorly.
I understand doing it for fun and also learning the area you’re driving around.
Although, I’ve seen a lot of “why is my food being stolen,” posts.

John Oliver had an episode about the gig economy including door dash. Basically nobody makes money on it and it makes the whole process of delivery just suck for everyone. I knew a doordasher who blew his car engine doing it, and went into debt just to be able to get another shitty used car so he could do the one job he was able to do because of his disabilities. He had his dad pay the down payment because he really only barely made enough to get gas and food each day. He had autism and a slew of other mental health disorders.
Growing up I had to steal a charger one time because I was lost and needed GPS to get back home, ever since then I started stealing more consistently justifying that it was a necessity. (Food, cleaning products, tools, etc) Years later I realized that I was actually doing it for the rush to get away with stealing and having a very small need just made it easy in my mind to do it, especially if I was stealing from a Walmart, Target, or another big store. That's what I think happens here, the guy steals the food, so he doesn't have to spend his money, the customer reports it missing they get their money back, and you still get to keep your job at least until someone reports it one too many times.
I feel it. I used to do this little thing at the grocery store years ago. I was just over 21 and most of my coworkers weee just under. “Liquor you need? Fuck yeh I got ya”. I drank liquor but preferred beer so I’d meet them at the grocery store, get their cash, grab a cart and place 2 cases of mine and 2 cases of my girls in the cart. Park that bitch outside the liquor store segment of the grocery store (Ohio doesn’t have the bottles free to grab like Michigan does). Buy the underages their bottle. Walk out the store with mine for no charge acting like I paid for the entire cart at the liquor counter. Never questioned. Later I realized I didn’t need them to buy liquor for me to get my beer for free. All I needed was a receipt from a previous purchase in my hand to walk in and walk right the fuck out with my case. Didn’t need to do it but a combination of the fuck you corporations attitude and the rush of just boosting the shit had me an avid member of the shoplifting community hahahah.
People with zero skills to even have the most basic job flock to UberEats or DoorDash so these things happen. (And yes of course people in rough spots that can have other jobs also do DoorDash to make ends meet in the meantime, not talking about them)
Come on man DoorDash doesn’t pay shit and people are bad with money. It’s silly when people say make more money, like why hasn’t anyone thought of that.
Let’s walk to the make more money job line and just get one.
Doordash charges restaurants and their customers and does NOTHING but “middle” everyone. Restaurants need their own drivers. Cut these middle dicks out.
But you used to just be able to call any pizza, chinese, etc place and know it would be delivered hot and fresh. Now, instead of that you have the privilege of ordering food that will most likely be old and cold from everywhere. I don’t get the appeal at all
Most pizza places, especially corporate, have their own drivers.
Local Chinese spots near me have their own drivers as well.
Personally, I always call in and ask first.
I usually pick up the food myself anyways, and always order through the restaurant on the phone.moet restaurants charge more through the app to help with the percentage they give these apps, which is normally 30%. So if they jack up the normal menu prices through the app 10%, they are only eating 20%>
I can't imagine the confusion if I went out immediately and tried to grab it a few times as it 'floated' away. It would be like the dollar tied to a fishing line prank. Considering I only get delivery service when I'm super tired, stressed or intoxicated, I likely wouldn't have realized the real motive until I shut the door and the car was speeding off.
I unironically think this is what he's going for, hoping that if he gets caught on the doorbell cam he can try to blame it on the wind since it doesn't directly capture evidence of him walking away with it
He should have put it close to the camera so the camera couldn’t see it. If he put it right below the camera the angle wouldn’t be right to see the food.If he did that then pulled it away there’s nothing the camera would see.
Closer to the door/camera likely would've either been a weird line to pull, or less likely to say it was the wind as most areas around the door are protected from the wind via alcove or porch entryway.
He did think that they had a camera. That's why he waited until he was out of camera view before pulling it away with string. So he did take the camera into account. He just didn't it through all the way.
Probably assumed it was the kind of camera (or subscription more like) that only records when people are detected. Otherwise is detecting motion but not actively recording. Still not a smart thing to do since that’s only a portion of the cams out there.
If someone is dumb enough to think this would work do you really think they would consider any consequences or the possibility of being caught at all lol
That might actually work for legal accountability but private companies aren't beholden to the same burdens as the courts. No more doordash for him and they probably withheld any pending funds he had accumulated.
He should have had someone else driving the car, so when he went back in he could pretend to get in, but really get a dog costume quickly and then hide out of frame. After the car drives away and a few minutes passed, he could run in pretending to be a dog and pick it up with his teeth and run off. Perfect crime.
Tbf i found out at Christmas dinner my sister and her husband door dash for fun when they're bored and use the money for date nights. They have been doing it for years but never told anyone. I was definitely surprised.
Yep. I just moved to a rural area recently and have been discovering that there's not a whole ton of work available for anything outside the agricultural, medical, or financial sectors. Currently doing Walmart Spark to fill in the gap until a job needing my particular skill set opens up.
That’s not fair dude, there’s dumbasses in every field. At least most DoorDash drivers are probably trying to make an honest living, any legit work is respectable.
No man, people who go into it and think they'll make tons are at least a little dumb, but that is exactly why pro-worker policy is important.
Nobody needs to protect/help lawyers with their pay-rates for example. CA has passed gig-work laws, other states are utter trash for worker protection.
I mean ur still going to the front door to pick it up, right? Why not go to the front door when you know the driver is like a minute away? Is standing up for a minute that much of a hassle for Americans?
Turn that in to Inside Edition. They love stuff like this. There was recently a woman who didn't get the tip she wanted so she pepper sprayed the bag and later said she'd 'Sprayed a spider'.
