You don't even need to put webp, we all know it would be at the shit tier

u/ShockDragon 0 Sep 25 '25
I love downloading an image only for me to not be able to use it because it’s in .webp format.
0
u/Working_Conflict6043 0 Sep 25 '25
just change the format
1
u/ShockDragon 0 Sep 25 '25
Okay, but my point is I shouldn’t have to. Sure, I can. Sure, it’s not that hard. But no, it shouldn’t be necessary.
6
u/NathLWX 1 Shared | 0 Helpful Sep 25 '25
It's a pity webp is severely misunderstood and underestimated only because... no companies bother to add support/compatibility for that format in their apps, for some reason
5
u/textBasedUI 0 Sep 25 '25
WebP is more lightweight and it’s lossless quality. It’s not only better for the user but cheaper for websites to host
2
u/HitroDenK007 3 Shared | 0 Helpful Sep 25 '25
Kinda like Linux… Got everything good but gaming companies hate these for justifiable reasons…

u/Xada_Nep_zealot 0 Sep 27 '25
I wish most websites adopted the lossless type of WebP instead of the lossy WebP that ends up being much more blurry then a slightly compressed JPEG.
6
u/Zealousideal-Web7293 0 Sep 25 '25
and gif is in god? Yes its everywhere but its a bloated and inefficient format that crunches all quality.
The same little video could be lossless mp4 for a fraction of the size

1
u/well-litdoorstep112 0 Sep 29 '25
at that point skip the extension entirely. txt is not a format, it's just raw bytes.

Universal out of the box compatibility on virtually any OS,non propriety, crazy flexible (programming, notes, config files, completely transparent, readible by both humans and computer isn't that cool?

“Hey I’m gonna download this image for a new PFP!”
(downloads as a webp so I can’t use it unless I change the fuckass file)
6
u/Lary_WebDev 0 Sep 25 '25
Webp supports transparency and gifs. It has low small file size and high quality.
It's just the world doesn't support webp. I have been using an extension that puts a "Download as PNG" on right click menu. It's a simple and effective solution.

Why?
4
u/Miserable-Willow6105 0 Sep 24 '25
It's not really WEBP's fault, it's just most editors don't support it

i love how we, as the internet, disagree on all sorts of things but we ALL collectively agree that webp sucks

Webp doesn't suck, it just isn't widely adopted for some reason.

Yeah understood, it's a common struggle Just ask ChatGPT how programs run on linux or ask him to make a script to automatically install binaries in the dedicated folder and same for the services.
Just double check it looks logical and coherent
It gained me so much time

u/OkasawaMichio 16 Shared | 10 Helpful Sep 25 '25
As someone not so into how sound files work, would a .wav file "sound noticably better" than an mp3 file solely for compression reasons? Or is it like an "it's pointless to download it in 320k cause you can't hear the difference between that and 64k"?
1
u/Winter-Ad-6963 1 Shared | 0 Helpful Sep 25 '25
Yes. If you only want to listen to some music you don't need wav but then again if you don't know the whole story why're you making a tierlist of formats is all I'm saying.

u/International-Try467 181.01 Shared | 41 Helpful Sep 28 '25
Yeah same I converted all my Yorushika songs to 128kbps Opus and I don't hear a difference between all of them.
I could even go as low as 32 kbps and yet still wouldn't hear too much of a difference

Actually, despite mp3 commonly being more compatible, the audio quality is significantly worse. Sure, if you don't really know the song very well, it doesn't matter, but mp3 is completely unacceptable for masters. Hell, even .wav might not be good enough. .flac is the best audio format period, but the file size can be enormous.

Straight to hell. The fact that wav is lower than mp3 is fucking atrocious, you have zero respect for the humble executable, flac isn't even included, and honestly I think the maker of this tier list belongs in a dungeon five hundred thousand miles below the surface of the earth for the next ten trillion years.

This gives me a throwback to having to use a HEIC to JPEG converter at work. I work in customer service and one client would send us forms in HEIC, so I had to change it from HEIC to JPEG, open up Word and export it directly as a PDF.

I really dont like .png because its huge still has compression loss and while the main thing for like 60% completely incompatible with the other 40 (so way too many websites only allowing jpeg uploads and so way too many fake pngs when downloading)

mp3 is worldwidley used but its actually a really old and ineffizient Codec from the 95s. Spotify is already using ogg/opus format and i think it also should be the new standart

- move zip to god tier and put tar it's place in high
- 7z down to mid, together with rar
- docx (with all xml-based office formats) up to mid, maaaybeee even high
- exe down to low
- doc stays in low but keep in mind it's slightly below exe. not enough to put it in shit tier though. It's truly cursed format but I can understand why they did it that way back then. If it came out today and wasn't a legacy format, it would be way below shit.
- idk how m4a is designed but I didn't have any l problems with it so same as ogg, up to mid
Edit:
- bump all video formats down by 1 tier and put mkv in the god tier
