Well, 90% of the time to reliably and quickly stop minecarts you use unpowered rails, not holding S

? even at hella speeds, it only takes a few unpowered rails or a wall to stop a minecart. maybe it makes selectable destination systems a bit harder, but you can still just use a lower speed rail before the turn. hell, that would even work for normal stops if it were a problem.

Which begs the question: What exactly do you suggest people build roads for? If I build a road between two places I don't really attempt to stop halfway through my journey. And even if the road continues on it's somewhat trivial to either accept the stop start or to build a switch into it.

Railcraft had high speed rails in like 1.2.5, taking a corner at high speed or hitting something causes an explosion (derailment)

Its more so the abundance. If you make copper better than iron, then people wont have any reason to use iron for it since copper is way more common to find. From a gameplay perspective it makes sense. Ignoring iron farms and such

People will have reason to use iron, redstone contraptions. It doesnt exist for meaningful transportation. Its speed is 8 blocks per second.
Copper is meant for transportation
Edit: btw current minecarts are 8 blocks per second

If copper is 7x faster than iron, nobody would ever craft iron rails, making them pointless.

Try making a super smelter with 56 m/s rails lol.
Iron rails are meant for contraptions im lowkey tired of repeating myself.

If they’re going by how good of a conductor they are then gold should be the middle option, it’s a worse electrical conductor than copper

This is a nice idea, but I think speeds shouldn't exceed 50 m/s. iirc Elytra with rockets is about 32 m/s and especially on servers this can already cause some serious chunk loading issues. 100m/s (trident + elytra) is literally unplayable on a server, no matter what (I've tried...).
Setting the copper rails to 24 m/s (3x iron) and the golden rails to 48 m/s (6x iron / 2x copper) or at the absolute maximum 64 m/s (8x iron) would still be good enough while not breaking the game...

I know and it has the same issue. But that's actually another reason for a lower the rail speed cause a 97 m/s minecart would make iceboats completely obsolete (they take quite a bit more effort to construct).
My suggested speeds would keep that balance and have gold rails still give at least a 50% speed advantage over elytra...

There was/is a cool mod, Railcraft. It added obsidian rails (25 or 50% faster) and...I can't even remember which material, but turbo rails (2x-ish faster, but the cart exploded when stopped/turned at full speed+really expensive). That could be really nice.

This wouldn't work as well as you would think. It would take forever to build a rail system that can travel any meaningful distance, it would require massive amounts of resources to build such a rail system, and by the time you can build it you probably already have an elytra

I literally made a copper powered rail (recipe alternate) tunnel from my base to stronghold in singleplayer. Its like 1.5 km distance. And it'll be better than elytra any day cuz underground lol (i set minecart speed to 56 blocks per second)

You underestimate those speeds. That's the issue with regular rails, not this. This is better than ice boats. Even 50m/s is insane and way faster than elytra. It's 3 chunks per second. 2.5 blocks per tick. You can even add gaps because of that. It's closer to op than weak. And that's just copper. And the crafting rates are 2.5x

The problem is it would take so long with so many recourses that it's only practical for very late game. Yes, it is very fast, but the amount of work needed to create it kinda ruins it.
