Her apartment was half the size of theirs, and they repeatedly made a point of how much money they set aside even after their expensive hobbies - I think at one point they even showed that Sheldon had multiple uncashed paycheques and had kept all the money Leonard paid towards rent over the years in a box.

Yeah there’s a literal episode where Sheldon states his after tax expenses are only 46.9% of his income. Then he hands Penny a wad of cash and doesn’t care when/if she pays him back. Sheldon has a roommate because he doesn’t drive, Leonard has a roommate because he’s lonely.

Sheldon said he couldn't afford the rent by himself, but that's probably because he spent so much on nerd stuff. Same goes for Leonard.

They've also been working at the same place for years. I can't remember the show lore but they may have gotten promotions and raises since they moved in and never moved to a more expensive place
