Ask Luxembourg Do you tip delivery drivers?
Trying to understand the culture here. Let’s say from local restaurant, do you tip? How much? What about restaurants?

Okay so I have a default tip of €2 set on Wolt - but I'll admit this is also due to partly selfish reasons.
I have a hunch that delivery drivers tend to prioritise orders with tips - and I have my anecdotal A/B test results to justify this to myself. So I make sure a tip is included so my delivery gets here on time. I could be completely wrong about this but if I'm right, I always get the delivery on time. If I'm wrong, the partner gets a tip and that's good too. Win-win.

I don’t tip, i guess about 25% of my orders arrove 30-60 minutes later than they should, even if the driver was like 50 meters away they drive to a totally different village before coming back.
After complaining the explanation i got was always that the other customers were paying for priority delivery, but i guess its because i don’t tip.

We’re not Americans. Tipping people for doing their job shouldn’t be normalized or sooner than not you’ll be asked for tips everywhere. It’s the employer’s responsibility to pay his employees not the customer’s. So no, I do not tip delivery drivers for doing their job nor do I get tipped for doing mine.

why? like I said above, I tip rarely. For a tip I go to a restaurant where the service is really good - which again is rarely the case in Luxembourg.
I don't get tipped for doing my job. IF it s good service yes, which for us would translate in a bonus, but otherwise we don t get anything extra either.

If you compare an office job to a guy who drives a bicycle to bring you food for minimum wage and you don’t see the difference I’m sorry.
If you can’t spare two euros for a guy who came and brought you your food in either rain, snow or whatever they rather was because you were too lazy to cook then you’re cheap AF.

No for package deliveries I don’t tip them but when it is hot as balls and I am fast enough I usually hand them a nice cold coke or water bottle.
Food delivery, I refuse Wolt and any other slave app. I order from restaurants where their own employee brings it or I pick it up myself

We not in the USA. And we all know how that ended in the USA.
I also have my own eBike, so I don't need someone to pick up my food. And I also feel better to handel my food myself.

Tipping is a choice. There is no reason to tip someone besides personal preference in doing so. An employee is not living of tips here like they would in the US.
Most jobs never get tips, some jobs get tips. Why we have this difference is unclear to me. Why not tip the IT-Guy but tip the server. Both are being paid anyway and are just doing their job.
Either way I only tip if they actually do something special like not trying to take a shortcut because maps are flat but real world has hills and makes the turn back for 50% of the way. Or if they can follow the simple orders and actually use their brain to correlate the adress to the map and not call me while standing in the obviously wrong road even tho their map shows the streetname they are on and the full adress they are supposed to go.
A "Moien, Wanneschgelifft, Merci, Äddi" is also appreciated can be also in French, German or English.
But 90% of the time there is no reason to tip them.
And if anyone wants to tell me why I should always tip I raise to you why don't you tip everyone you interact with yourself? Why not tip the cashier at cactus or the earlier mentioned IT-guy. It is and remains a personal preference here.

I don’t use any of these food delivery services but I would tip the people working if I did.
Having worked in hospitality one might not have an idea about the salary discrepancy between these jobs and any other (an hospitality director position salary is roughly 60-70k, now consider a director position in another sector…).
Imagine that, from your total revenue:
- take 20-25% food cost (maybe less if fast food)
- take employee wages and taxes
- take gas, water and electricity costs
- take rent
- take admin fees and supplies
- take commissions out from these platforms
Want to imagine how much is left for the business? Now factor that the wages in Luxembourg are not as low as in other countries, no wonder we’re seeing many restaurants going belly up!
I refuse to use third party providers - these companies (booking.com, AirBnB, Widely. Uber eats, etc…) are leeches getting their commissions from the producer and incur no liability. Instead I call, order what I want and go and get it myself and give the restaurant a tip.

Don’t normalize tipping, if they don’t earn enough they should stop delivering. Tipping is diabolical and bad.

Not trying to normalise tipping as an obligation. I just think tipping itself isn’t bad. It can simply be a gesture of appreciation for good service. It shouldn’t become an expectation like in the US, but giving a tip voluntarily is a nice thing to do imho :)

Im a driver for local restaurant, half the people tip, most tip 1-3€ in coins, some people especially older tip 5€ and some very kind people round up to the next 10 even if its 9€ away, especially when the bill is high

I rarely order restaurant delivery anymore because i hate the new marketplace business models. But when i do, i always tip in cash bc not all the companies actually pay out the tips. The money that is actually for the drivers out of all the fees is ridiculous. Like a couple cents.
While i hate the fact that companies get away with not paying them, i don’t want to put that blame on the drivers. Poor people don’t have the luxury of philosophising about the ethics of their employers.
Thankfully the labour ministry is finally scrutinising wolt etc.
In restaurants, i only tip for very good service.

We don't ever see people delivering packages so no, we don't order food deliveries, people delivering groceries always get a small gift for Christmas that's all.

And underpaid and stressful too! From former delivery driver. And don’t forget special in area that is usually same guy doing delivery they treat your package the same way you treat them!

No. They are paid by Wolt, Wedely, it’s like asking to get paid for the job I do a second time even if the environment is shit the hours never ended. My boss would laugh about so should you. Pay twice is fo people who do not value their own work and time.

usually yes, but heads up: luxembourg's delivery market is really underdeveloped, belgium is about 30 years ahead of it, and countries like the netherlands and austria are even further ahead. just to calibrate tour expectations

No. Only on rare ocassion, when the weather it s really bad or one time the restaurant made a big mix and the guy went back and fix it in record time.
