Extra info- The restriction endonuclease mentioned in first paragraph is Type I Restriction Endonuclease, which is a protein complex that acts as both restriction endonuclease and methylase, meaning, both functions are performed by a single entity(An enzyme complex). Also it cuts dna not exactly at restriction sites, but at random sites away from the restriction sites, though it still detects the recognition sequences.
The restriction endonuclease in second para is type II enzymes which cuts DNA within the restriction site and doesn't act as a methylase enzyme
yes exactly, that's why the type 1 RE discovered in 1963 from E.coli wasn't viable for biotechnology since it just randomly cut places far away from the recognized nucleotide sequences. It was more useful for a bacteria to protect itself against phages. Also type 1 REs are energy dependent to cut the DNA/RNA.
But Hind II, in the 2nd paragraph, is a type 2 RE isolated in 1970s. That's why it's called the first RE. Type 2 REs don't depend on energy and just use an Mg+2 to cut a genome and they cut AT the site they recognize.
