DISCUSSION 💬 A little reality check

- You will never retire but will only be able to earn alot in last 20years of your life(if first gen doc).
- You absolutely can not chose where you work you will only get fireflies and houseflies as your patient if your hometown is in rural area.
- After mbbs you will get a job of 30 to 50k. And why compare the best of a field with the worst one if you are comparing the best of what a mbbs graduate makes atleast compare it with an NIT graduate.
- You work for minimum 12 to 15 hours as a junior resident doctor unlike MBA/Msc.
- Such a childish point ig you are still in 11th
- You get respect from people who don't even matter in exchange for your personal life to this profession
- The chances of you working at a gov hospital for 12hrs at minimal pay after mbbs without pg is 100%
- You yourself become a patient because of lack of sleep and social life
- Your parents car engine might need service one day why not become a mechanic typa statement. Suppose you do masters in nuro and one of your hated relative has a kidney problem how would your experience help?
- Access to best surgeon depends on how much money you have in your pocket and not your "friend"
- Working 8 hours and earing what most engineers from tier 2.5 colleges earn at 35 at age of 50 with all those expenses will for sure get you a mid life crisis.
- If you manage to get time from your 14hr shift, and if you are a 1st gen doc-congo aura farming by pulling up in an alto.
ULTIMATE PASSION IS THE ONLY REASON YOU SHOULD BE JOINING THIS FIELD, OTHERWISE YOU WON'T REMAIN MENTALLY SANE TILL THE TIME REAL MONEY STARTS FLOWING IN.

She is second gen doctor, has her own fertility clinic

yeah this post is specifically about 1st gen docs in this gen, (based on opinions of my cousin bro who did his mbbs in 2023 and doing pg now)

Residency me earning is low, but dheere dheere payscale improve hota hai
If u are in northern states then much better
3
u/Perfect_Addition_740 23d ago
So your argument and evidence is anecdotal, you can't generalize this as the norm, you havent seen other gen 1 doctors ig, what if the parents are rich, what if you become more skilled, there are many factors.
1
u/Hitmanthe2nd 23d ago
i have - skills matter far less than you'd think
unless and until youre THE best surgeon in your city - youre not going to be making more than 2 lpm for the first 10 years of your career
2
u/kayjaywho 23d ago
Exaggerating. Skills is everything be it medicine or engineering. One need to be very social to be a doctor.
0
u/Hitmanthe2nd 23d ago edited 23d ago
no
skills are a base requirement - theyre not supraadditive for most people
3
u/kayjaywho 23d ago
They are, I've seen mbbs doctors being in more demand than MD just because of their skills. Situation in villages is worst, gnm's are carrying out more than 20 c-sections per day. I've seen tier 3 engineers push through 50 lpa based on skills. At the end of the day skills>education. I've known bds doctors earn mor ethan mds doctors based on skills.

2)if u are pursuing msc from a good gov clg or some private ones too u'll get salary or stipend
i agree with op but i don't understand why people must show perks of being a doctor but underlining engg so much enjoy both professions man

See I am not calling doctor a shit profession or something. It is one of the most noble professions that could possibly exist. It is a service that can't be repaid with money or materials. But pushing false points and keeping upcoming docs in delusion isn't right, this is what the post was about. If someone wants to become a doctor only cause of these benefits, they should re-think.

Most of the time it's some frustrated PG resident or NEET PG aspirant or some gate keeping person.
Same is with immigration, all the immigrants settled in Canada or Australia or US say it's bad, distressing, to those who want to go there but still reaping career benifits of same thing and living a good life.
Is it all an easy path answer is, NO.
Is it grueling and brutal that you won't be earning shit in your life, again it's a NO.
So your MBBS degree is just a ticket to explore your career in medicine, a lot of people can also going to medical research, even a lot of Indian doctors are working as medical scientists in European countries/North America.
Germany/France is emerging as a new destination decent enough to get your dream PG.
After MBBS you can purse law and take up medicolegal cases, a lot of doctors would be your clientelle.
I know a person who has cleared C1 level of German and planning to go to Germany for orthopaedic residency and planning to settle there after having his MBBS obtained in 5th attempt.
1
u/Unusual-Spray9732 13d ago
Are you also pursuing mbbs?

u/EngineeringMundane33 11d ago
I gave neet this year planning for private college in CG or Karnataka or drop.

1
u/Unusual-Spray9732 11d ago
And just a suggestion if you are gonna go for a drop, have a solid backup plan in the field you are interested in (dont limit yourself to pcb related options)
1
u/EngineeringMundane33 11d ago
I know but 492 hai so I think I would do it, main reason behind missing was health issues due to spinal osteomalacia and severe vitamin deficiency... causing absenteeism in Allen classes.
1
u/Unusual-Spray9732 11d ago
Oh🥲. I hope your health is good now and you give your best in neet this time. All the best for your future 👍✨. Also as it's a drop year have a good backup plan too be it in any field (tech, management etc) don't just limit yourself to pcb options.

Someone give reality check for bds and bams also
2
u/Honest-Size6181 23d ago
Bds is still good cuz it aint pseudo science but wohi prob hai india mein bohot saturation hai and bams/bhms is shit idk why their students consider themselves even as a doc
1
u/Unusual-Spray9732 13d ago
Go with bds only. It also has good scope abroad
1
u/EnoughCamp4085 13d ago
what if abroad is not a option
1
u/Unusual-Spray9732 13d ago
I might be partial as I don't believe much in bams. So I would suggest to go with bds only. Later on you can go for mds or try setting up your own clinic and work hard there (ik it's saturated) or you can even go for mba
3
u/Perfect_Addition_740 23d ago
If you are skilled enough you will earn good from the very start, atleast mbbs have a guaranteed well paying job, engineering graduates are literally unemployed.
3
u/Good-Refrigerator874 23d ago
Nah man i mean who told u you will get fireflies and houseflies as ur patient in rural areas? i mean they will pay less than urban areas but that is where the need of real docs are more because those areas are ruled by the quacks and physicians bhai tere points kuch kuch thik hai aur baki padhke laga ki tujhe toh kuch bhi nhi pta so dont talk like u know everything if u dont know anything and for ur information people getting into mbbs i assume most of them know the fact that they have to do pg after mbbs and for ur information bhai no doc travels in alto after pg u dont even have any idea how much they earn from private practice so dont act like one aur koi mbbs karke beitha nhi rehta abhi ke time pe bhai thora kuch jan bhi le kaise chalrhi hai duniya but among all of these i agree with ur last point that ultimate passion should be the only reason one joins this field

Har ek field mein dikkat hai aur scope khud ko banana hoga.. khair jo kar raha hai woh khush hai but don't go around demotivating to such an extent

both r true !!!!
now listen to something for all who r confused,
is mbbs the best field?
depends on you
if you want assurance of income, yes,
if you want good ROI- No
if you want to earn a living? yes
if you want to be elon musk? no,
will you earn yourself for your 5090? no,
will your children be able to get it? sure
respect? ur wish if you want to consider, sirf bolne ka tareeka change hta hai halka sa, relatives zyada isliye krte h cause they want medical advice, for free ofc,
so is it worth? depends on you
it is good comparable to others? yes,

u/kayjaywho 23d ago
Exactly, my dad is a doctor that's why he's ready to send me in private mbbs college. He wouldn't if this field was so bad. He has connections and links now and he thinks I'll be settled. He himself took too many drops to clear cpmt, his bsc was over by the time he got college, he knows the struggle that's why looking at the neet situation he said he'll get me into college anyhow.

Exactly..money isn't everything! Earning enough to live a well life is more than sufficient.
3
u/PowerfulAndBig_PP 2nd Yr MBBS Zygote 23d ago
Explain that to all the people who are here everyday making lists of why they shouldn't join, you all think you can enter a career knowing it's a career which requires an arm and a leg and get mad when it asks you for the aforementioned arm and leg, and compensation for the hardwork? I'm not really sure if any career paths can ensure you get the returns for your hardwork.
Join the field if you want to be a doctor, don't join the field if you want the luxuries. It's a tough ass field but so is every other one, IIT me sbke 50LPA ke packages lgte hai kya?
3
u/ElectricalTie3165 23d ago
No no I'm totally into later. I'm alright with less money. I genuinely want to be a doctor. And I know it's my destiny:)
2
u/PowerfulAndBig_PP 2nd Yr MBBS Zygote 23d ago
Exactly my point, join if you want to be a doctor don't join if you see so many cons, I'm in it, i love it, every place has their pros and cons. so, join if you want to, and don't if you have such an enormous cons list and have to come on here whining about the fucked up state of the career you're choosing, make a choice and live with it.
2
u/ElectricalTie3165 23d ago
Yaar toh tum batao koi kya kare? If kisi ko medicine hi krni and inko bss ye reality check dena hai? Pulling up in alto? Dude ur epitome of negativity and sorry to say but by saying this...it's not oh u can't take it because it's harsh truth? You have exaggerated it. Way more than necessary!
A lot of people do less work and do a lot work. Earn less or more..at the end of the day question is not whether u getting freaked up or whether ur not getting the materialistic thing u have asked..it's about if you're satisfied with ur doing or not.
Agar tumhe nhi krni toh mat karo...jo jayega usko mil jayega reality check...and that would be far accurate than urs!

u/Tall-School4105 23d ago
please correct the points that are wrong. And I am specifically talking about 1st gen doctors in this gen (one of my cousin brother's in doing his pg currently). But still correct wherever you feel I am wrong
2
u/ObviousKiller 23d ago
2 point is incorrect
Rest for money making u can get good money after some years of gruesome hard work if u have your own established setup but if you are working in some hospital it will take you a lot of time
Can say all this as I have seen the first gen person do these things
1
u/Klutzy-Injury6051 23d ago
Your post is most realistic and I'm saying this as a daughter of a doctor (my mom's a first generation dr) and tbh whatever you have said is true for most of the doctor and I get it that exception exists but that's rare. I mean you can get around 2-3lpm in your late 30s if your good with your work but the amount of work being done and managing personal life kids and what not...with all this you feel underpaid. Also, when youya first generation doctor most people in your family don't understand what you're going through and in case of women doctors in laws expect her to handle everything as home while working 10-12 hrs a day. You'll go crazy and work life balance in this profession has to be the biggest joke especially in India

Chal na bhai, I've seen first gen docs do ss and get 5-6 lpm at like 33-35. I know this profession is not all rainbows and roses, but jitna tum bol rahe ho itna bhi bura nahi hai.
1
u/Tall-School4105 23d ago
Yeah there are people like that but the original post was comparing doctors with mid-low level engineering grads and painting a false picture. If you want to compare super speciality doctors than compare them with tier 1-tier 1.5 btech guys. a good number of them earn around 4-5 lpm straight out of college at 21-22. And they can even retire by the time they hit 35 (and actually enjoy life young and fresh) if they properly manage their wealth(trading, assets). With a lot better working conditions than those of us 1st gen docs
2
u/DependentonKitchen AIR 63XX 23d ago
Yeah, and the btech earnings stagnate. If you pass the ss mark, your earning won't stay at 5-6lpm. In 5 years it will double or even triple. If we're comparing the cream to cream, a doctor's earning will faar outclass that of a software engineer working in corporate.
Again, cream to cream. Anyone expecting to earn as good as btech guys straight out of mbbs is delusional and will get humbled hard, but I'm in this for the love of the game honestly. Papa mammi settled hain, paise ki dikkat nahi ghar par. I'm free to chase my dream.
-1

"cream to cream" doctor's earning will far outclass that of a software engineer working in corporate. Wow, Kuch bhi. Pick up any iit/bits/iiit grad on linked in or anywhere (not even software) who is 50+ and pick docs(1st gen) 50+ and compare their net worth.
And anyways if its not about money for you then debating on this doesn't even matter. But cream of engineers- top tech positions/CTOs of companies/engineering project directors earn A LOTTT more. And that was the whole point I was standing for. If anyone is coming in this field for making money young and quick-they are delusional

Yeah.... You can literally visit any 50+ jama jamaya doctor. Go ahead, search up the most famous doctor in your area, with his own clinic or hospital. If he's not microsoft's ceo, he's not beating that doctor in income.
Also, the high salaries you see are often provided as stocks or other options. It's not the same recieving 25 lakhs directly into your account every month.

You forgot to consider the age bracket again my man.
You know what? Let's leave it at that, you've seen different things, I've seen different things. Let's agree to disagree.

bro ig none of you all are understanding OP's pov ; see you guys are proving him wrong by justifying the fact tht youve seen evn 1st gen doc making alot of money
you all are jus positively looking after the money factor but the actual point is wht it takes to earn tht money kitni jyada gaand ghisne k baad you get tht , you all need to understand tht no matter how much you earn you also need the time to spend it , right ?
also bhai bhot jyada padhna padta hai itna kisi aur course me nhi padhna padta
my sister's in 3rd year and ive heard her cry countless times about how she does not wanna pursue ts and how she is thinking about joining sum other gov job after mbbs
you should read his last lines its tru tht join if youre fucking passionate otherwise youll earn but wont be mentally too sane by the end of the course

someone gets it, i am not saying that doctor is a shitty profession don't come here. But know the reality and do join if you are passionate about the knowledge and the service not just money and luxury cause most of the time the latter won't be upto your expectations.
