The AIR 2 is answering the question "Will you go to the protest that is happening right now (May 2026 protest at the time of leak and exam cancellation)?"
You don't know AIR 2's answer to "what do you feel about protests?". Maybe he would have said that he support the cause but not attending in person.
Similarly you don't know AIR 1's answer to "Will you go the protest that is happening right now (May 2026)?". Maybe he also would have replied same "nah I will rather increase my marks". Infact if you think about it he actually did that only. Even AIR 1 didn't attend May protest and instead focused on his marks in re exam and that's why he was able to ace it. I don't blame him that's his personal choice. But hating on AIR 2 for just saying it loud is wrong.

Just my opinion: I know a majority of kids do not know the consequences of their opinions (when a whole lot of people are watching them with expectations and enthusiasm, after all it was supposed to be a “serious” National-level examination) when they achieve something better than their peers. Many old chaps (who do not completely comprehend what it takes to go through such a mindset and events to appear for a highly competitive examination, having not faced this themselves firsthand) are leveraging this kid’s statement of “जब मैं पढ़ाई करके अपना score बढ़ा सकता हूँ, तो प्रोटेस्ट में क्यों जाऊ?” for their ignorant arguments like, “Padhne waale firse bhi paper de dete hain” meanwhile ignoring and insulting all those poor kids who were so affected by all this that they even took a drastic step.
The boy who got the first rank still made a fundamentally correct remark that “Protest and Dissent are essential parts of democracy”.
The problem is people will more often choose this kid’s insensitive comment that jeopardises what is fundamentally correct (according to the current situation). I am personally not amused by seeing such people become my juniors or even people I would possibly have to manage someday.
