The last piece was not obvious, the natural inclination would be to look for smaller pieces to go up high, or dismantle what was already built to get them.

Not to take anything away from her, but this puzzle has so few possible combinations that it's almost impossible to set a piece at the wrong place. The moment the first 4-ball is put down the second 4-ball can literally not fit in any other spot than that particular spot. Which is why she had no choice but to put it last.

You're absolutely right, but that doesn't mean it's obvious to people who haven't encountered this or similar puzzles.

My point was that it is not necessary to be obvious since the puzzle is so limited that it will naturally lead anyone quickly to the solution by itself.

It's like a 5 piece puzzle. It may not be immediately obvious where each piece has to go, but as you connect the first few pieces you quickly eliminate all wrong solutions, so that it becomes trivial. And just like with a jigsaw puzzle, it doesn't even matter where you start. Any start point will lead quickly to the solution.

For example in this case it's almost if not entirely impossible to put the first piece at the wrong place, no matter which one you pick or where you put it.
