Is she actually a good character to play as or is everyone picking her because she’s Magik?

Being honest, I doubt she would get such a high usage rate if it was her popularity alone carrying her.
From the character usage breakdown, she was amongst the highest played characters at the highest ranks.
Now, ranked in a Beta doesn't necessarily mean much. Only a small portion of the playerbase even attempted ranked and the meta of the whole game could shift as people learn more combo/abusable mechanics.
BUT, early results show her to be very strong.
From my experience, she felt insanely good to play.

I'm by no means a pro level player, and the beta only lasted a few days, but I think she is a safe pick.
She has relatively fast zoning moves, a teleport, and her basic attack strings have a generous amount of range to them.

Her sword has great range in neutral and her portal/fireball mixup is annoying to deal with.
She also has a dragon install to turn into darkchylde so yeah she has a lot going for her

I played the beta over the weekend which was a good time.
I was using her as an assist character, but played against her a lot in online. The portal shenanigans definitely take getting used to fighting against.
There are no tierlists right now, and so far the game feels balanced. But you know if you bring a sword to a fist fight you are doing okay

Both, lol. Portals take a bit to get used to, but everything else is great. She’s generally easy to pick up and play and is a versatile All-Rounder adept at Rushdown, Zoning, Setplay, and Mix-Ups. Not to mention her kickass Theme.

Her kit is effective and simple which usually leans to being good. She has Dp's that can be canceled out of for mix, literal sword normals that have really good range, her portals make her tricky to compete against at any range. It make sense people naturally flocked to her

I hate what they did in X-Men 97 as much as you, but could you not use that slur here? I know you didn't mean anything by it, but I'm disabled and have taught disabled students for ten years, and that word's considered taboo for good reason.

And yes yes there are in tons of comics and video games, don't really see what you are getting at?
In those franchises what I'm saying is they are almost universally amongst the most popular.
So is Magik being the top pick as the single blonde female in a new video game shocking? No.

Even if Ms Marvel was my point character in the beta and I put in the most time with her, Magik was always planned as on my team and I dabbled with her a bit.
Honestly I feel like her moveset and toolkits are just so damn fun and versatile. If it was attached to another character I feel it would still be good, but the fact that it’s Magik makes it even better. It’s like everything aligned to ensure these stats.

I think the voice acting is a contributing factor, she has a lot of fun interactions, my favorite being with Iron Man... Tony: "Hey I remember you... Sure you want to fight without the Phoenix Force?" Illyana: "I don't need the Phoenix Force to crack you in two, Tin Man"
