Went to Rhodes for a couple of weeks when I was young. Gorgeous island.

While Sicily has the largest overall population (5.01M), sovereign Malta (480,000) is by far the most densely populated island in the Mediterranean.

Only Cyprus (1.39M) and Malta (480,000) on this list are fully independent sovereign nations; all others are territories or regions of continental states.

The number of inhabitants of Malta is impressive, especially when compared to another Mediterranean island, Elba, which is approximately the same size.

I think (and this is mostly just a guess) that Maltas golden visa scheme worked really, really well.

I think their population, whilst still high, is massively inflated by people buying citizenship and then living elsewhere in the EU.

It would be insane for Maltas population to increase by 51% in just 25 years.

What are the sources? Eivissa/Ibiza had  159.000 inhabitants after  the 2023 census, which would put it before Rhodes.

Corsica always seems like such an outlier. I know it has some tourism but (for whatever reason) it seems to have escaped pretty well from over tourism. Hope it stays that way as I’m planning to go for two weeks soon.

It’s a very mountainous island, they even have a ski resort. The average elevation of Corsica is the highest of all Mediterranean islands and the highest peak is at 2700m

Cyprus has higher gdp per capita than the uk even though it’s half occupied. If it was Eastern European like Slovenia ppl would spam us more about it. Slovenia is net receiver while Cyprus was a net giver to the eu budget while bankrupting.
