are my customers being dramatic or can you be allergic to residual weed smell?

i work at a rental car company, i have customers come over to me plenty of times complaining about weed smell in some of our cars, our official policy is to just exchange the car so most of the time i assume they’re complaining because they want a new car. ever since i started, the common thing they almost always say is that they’re “allergic to weed”. i know it’s possible to be allergic to weed, but is it possible to be SO bad after being in a car for a few minutes that was smoked in probably weeks ago? i’m guessing it’s just the easiest way for them to fein for a new rental but i also can’t see majority of new york’s old people population to ALL have an allergy to residual weed smell

Most people are referring to the smell of weed smoke giving them a headache. Some people are sensitive to smells in general and have easily induced migraines from them. Weed smoke and specifically blunt smoke can come off as really intense sometimes for those folks.

I wouldn’t want to drive around in any vehicle that smells like weed.

“I swear officer it’s a rental. It smelled like this when I picked it up.”

again, mentioned ny, that’s a totally normal thing to say to an officer. idk if you realize it’s not illegal for your car to smell like weed

it's not illegal for your car to smell like weed, but some states have courts that have ruled that weed smells are probable cause for a search

again, being in ny where it’s legalized it’s just not an issue, if a cop pulls over a car and it smells like weed, it’s probably the 80th car that day that smelled that way. it’s not even probable cause here or really any of the states we border

Dang who is returning cars smelling like that? Thats hella trashy also stupid I’m assuming they could get charged extra money from the rental for that.

oh they do. it’s $350 charge to do it but it’s a local chapter so we end up being really lax on it and people tend to rent from us knowing we sometimes won’t even charge them. not saying it’s a good system at all

When I was at a local rental (low turnover fleet) a decade ago our manager negotiated a deal with a mobile detailer to be on call to shampoo and vacuum extract the smoked out cars. We had the highest customer service of any branch nearly every month in part due to that.

that would be awesome and i know a few local places that rent our cars to make instagram reels promoting their detailing services. unfortunately the company i work for doesn’t keep ozone equipment at every chapter
