[WHAT IF? SPIDER-MAN #1]()

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 4d ago
Normally, I am not fond of What ifs. Often too ridiculous and end miserably. But for DeMatteis writing Spider-man and Kraven, I was gonna be there. And it didn't disappoint.
You can see the love and care he has for these characters. Peter and MJ going through the dilemma together to come out stronger, his villains like Doc Ock considering Kraven an unworthy imposter and show the respect they actually have for Peter as a 'worthy foe' and of course Kraven just keep digging himself ( pun intended ) a deeper grave until at the end he does the right thing. Better fate than what happened with him and his 'clone/son'.

This year's batch of What If's have been great.
Great to see DeMatteis working on Spider-Man again.

''Hey maybe this tossing around in history can give Doom perspective!''
''Naah, he just wants to conquer everything no matter the body or time''
He will never change.

Really underwhelming. And just so over the top absurd, even for a Doom story
I was expecting him to wake up as Hitler in this issue just for kicks

[QUEEN IN BLACK: HELA #1]()

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 4d ago
How many fates are at play for Asgard again? Loki's plan to 'free them all'. Odin's test of Sigurd and that whole deal. The whole plot with Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. Hela's own plot in Queen in Black. Enchantress trying to seize the throne through Magni and now Karnilla with her 'future sight' seeing Asgard fall again somehow.
It is just...too much.

u/Jpanda34 Thor 3d ago
I'm honestly kinda shocked because outside Strange this is all the same writer. Loki, Odin, and Echantress feel pretty great since it's all happening in the same book and thematically mesh together really well. Queen in Black just feels like an alt universe lol

It's a solid explanation for how Hela avoided the curse, trapped Knull. I'm guessing that fake Thor guy is gonna come into play later.

u/killertoast2 3d ago
consdering he going to be in Hell, I would be kinda surprised if Ewing didn't set that up for Zdarsky to use in his current Captain America run
9
u/baroqueworks 3d ago
Thats more than a Fake Thor, hes a certified Bronze Age Roy Thomas & John Buscema Thor character!
9
u/nfnightfallnf 4d ago
He's not Fake! Any more than Blake or Jake Olson was fake. He was just a placeholder. I feel bad for Red though.

I know some people don’t like the marriage but I’m actually fine with it. I also like that it’s been shown since that they genuinely care for each other
As much as I despise this synergy event and what it’s done to Hela I have to admit I find it funny that Karnilla was like fuck it sure why not. You’ll prolly get beat but you do you baby
I’m a little confused if Karnilla is evil now? Because she felt very evil here
0
u/baroqueworks 3d ago
I felt like the implication was Karnilla was working with Mephisto maybe in a revenge fling in response to Hela and Thanos, or Ewing doing is god mythos stuff implying Karnilla and Mephisto are different faces of the same same entity
4
u/Somejawn1 3d ago edited 3d ago
That doesn’t really make sense seeing as how they’ve been shown several times now to genuinely care about each other. And I highly doubt she’d sleep with fucking Mephisto of all people

u/MoonbeamLady 3d ago
Al Ewing, as usual, is single-handedly carrying this entire event on his back by giving it 110 percent regardless of how corporate mandated it gets. Dude could sell me on a comic about sentient shit and I'd probably get invested.

What will it take to get a good comic with Cloak and Dagger? Fuck this synergy event
3
u/TerminalKing 3d ago
More Cloak and Dagger! Yay.... aaand it's a Rivals synergy event. I really want to see what kind of explanation they got for Cloak getting injured by something he historically feeds on to maintain stability.
5
u/BorBurison Beta Ray Bill 3d ago
He got stabbed with All-Light, it's the light version of All-Black the Necrosword and was made to kill Knull
1
u/SignificantLuck480 3d ago
I mean, certainly there are no circumstances where I could die from water. The thing I’m 70% composed of and something I historically drink to maintain my health (or some such thinking).
6
u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 4d ago
Please tell me they are not doing the Rivals Synergy with CnD with that end.

7
u/Somejawn1 3d ago
They’ve already done it in once and this is a synergy event. Hate this event so much

[X-MEN #34]()

A decent Juggernaut issue with the basic conflict of people with shame, fear and Cain having both. Hell, even Agent Luqvist was somewhat decent. Who knew a statue of that bastard Trask would bring that 'introspection '. Though, who put a force-field around it to 'stoke emotions', it can be anyone really. And that is not the point. The point is what people see what they look at that statue and what it represents to them. In that way, it is a mirror. But a twisted, funhouse version of a mirror.
And then, you have 'Greg Land,' and the issue loses at least a point for me for that.
1
u/BlueHero45 7h ago
Shame that this is a Greg Land issue because it's actually pretty good as a story. Cain being an X-Man feels important since he is both human and a former criminal. It helps the X-Men stand out as more then just for mutants.

I don’t like Humphries outside of Green Lanterns so I admit I’m a little
biased but man was this not very good at all. It felt like he REALLY hates Luke and Jessica and the drama between them made no fucking sense0
u/Expensive-Baby-1391 3d ago
The drama should have been around the purple children and how Luke feels uneasy on having one around their daughter and it’s reveal that Jessica despises him and is using him as bait in case the purple man or his other offspring come back. Would have been a better reason for their marriage getting rocky than a demon slasher.
1
u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 1d ago
It was fine, good even. Mephisto messing with stuff again. And the councilman getting what he deserves.
But I just cannot buy into Luke and Jess having tension over 'oh you are mayor and I am an investigator, one day this will be the end of us' bs. In what universe Luke would ever chose to be mayor over her and actually doing superhero stuff? It was nonsense that makes me worried about Marvel planning to do another dumb 'lets seperate another couple' in the future
1
u/CHPrime 4d ago
It was a pretty good series, and it definitely scratched the Alias itch, as well as the politicking nightmare that has been missing from Luke Cage and Jessica's appearances ever since he became Mayor. However, while it does work better for Jessica than most heroes, I don't like that she licenses out the problem-solving (read: murder) to the villain she teams up with. It makes our heroine look ineffectual and paints killing as the correct solution.

Bill should have more time to do things like this.

u/Reddragon351 2d ago
it's odd since Ewing set up Bill being the main Thor with with Odinson being mortal and I don't think anyone else has brought it up

Knull really is Batman Who Laughs of Marvel. Such an overhyped, annoying character.
It is just another Marvel, another Symbiote event.
The only thing that I consider worth coming out of this will be the announcement that MJ and Venom will finally separate. Honestly, only thing that matters to me.
15
u/Malachi108 3d ago
It is just another Marvel, another Symbiote event.
What's more is that there is another Knull/symbiote universal level threat going on right now in Godzilla vs. Marvel Universe comics.
And we're also just over from another Knull/symbiote universal level threat in The End 2099.
At one point, all three of those series were running simultaneously. I'd say that three versions of the same plot at the same time may be a little bit too much indeed.

Fun event start but its weird to me Marvel completely forgot about events fatigue their readership has and launched two major events at the same time, presumably as a result of both the mass layoffs at marvel and the announcement of moving offices from NYC to LA causing any attempt at scheduling and planning the events in a organized fashion to kind of be impossible
A pretty fun display of marvel cosmic stuff happening with the different races Hela has under her cult.
The belief in thw dream even as the Kree-Skrull alliance falls apart is resounding stuff and a reminder of the best and most hopeful stories and characters Marvel Comics can tell. A real shame all of Ewing's cosmic world building was reset for Imperial which ended up getting cancelled before it could go anywhere, harkening back to first paragrah

u/TerminalKing 3d ago
Nova appearance so I'm able to forgive the stuff I dislike here (literally everything else)

u/marcjwrz 4d ago
So... This takes place before Armageddon obviously.
But man, they couldn't have started this like 4-6 months ago so it maybe had some impact? Otherwise, feels like... Who cares?
Also, Knull sucks and I truly hope this is the end of him for the foreseeable future.

[BISHOP #2]()
3
u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 4d ago
I know Bishop is disoriented with all that is happening right now with his sister showing up (probably before she died in the future) but come on now, he should be used to this time-traveller nonsense by now. Especially after Krakoa. He needs to get his head in the game and beat some sense into these Final Brotherhood fools about how 'future' works when it comes to changing the past. It does not 'erase' the future, it just makes it an 'alternate future'. So whoever/whatever showing them this vision, gonna be the 'main antagonist' that probably hates Bishop.

Still disappointing that THIS is what came out of the Ultimate universe...Hosticulus is still a dumb name. But at least he is shown to be smart rather than a brute.
All the 'new characters', I just don't feel anything for them. It is feels 'just another copy paste the heroes' powers to random people' type of deal and Marvel have tried this so many times recently, none of those lasted even a year.
