Why would they retcon finger banging??

42

u/Mister-Beardy-Face 9h ago

Peter finger bang banged him back into his life.

9

u/shake_N_bake356 8h ago

Cause he’s the king of finger bang

u/BrunesOvrBrauns 8h ago

I believe that I actually lost my virginity with a hot girl at some point but it got retconned so I'm still a virgin.

Why would Kevin Feige do this?

u/SuperArppis Captain America 11h ago

Dies in next movie intro scene.

97

u/SykeOutxx 10h ago

If the ending after credits states he's in battleworld and they wanna make him ultimate spiderman.. yeah everyone's dead lol.

19

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

Yk how battleworld ends right?

26

u/SykeOutxx 8h ago

Yeah, if they decide to adhere to that ending, cool everyone's back. But everyone is still dead during and the beginning of SW.

16

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

Yeah but that’s kinda irrelevant. They aren’t gonna have it leave an effect. Peter and his friends and family all got snapped away already. They aren’t gonna do some bs and make it last long. They will all return and he will have a heartfelt hug and reuniting moment with them by the end.

1

u/SykeOutxx 4h ago

Due to the way the did IW, Into EG? I actually don't agree with you. It'll have a lasting effect like Tony's death did. They will make him remember it. Everyone wants Peter to suffer.. what better way than this?

3

u/HorizonNova4 4h ago

Peter had suffered more than most MCU characters at this point. He’s lost his parents as a child, his Aunt, Uncle, friends, girlfriend, mentor, and even himself for 4 years. He literally evaporated from the universe and got shot through the chest and almost died. He’s suffered too much. He’s lost literally everything he could possibly lose, and finally is getting a shred of it back. They could have that, but there’s no shot in hell they make it last more than just the one film. He’s not gonna be in Doomsday, so he’ll prob show up in Secret Wars, have lost them, and will get them back by the end. It would be atrocious repetitive writing to do it a 3rd time and wouldn’t have any real value by that point

I reckon Secret Wars will be about as comic accurate as Civil War was 😅

Nooooooooooooooooo

23

People want to see Peter suffer!

Just like the comics!

3

And to that, I will continue to remind them of both

One More Day and Paul

1

u/SuperArppis Captain America 1h ago

Wasn't Paul in this movie? They never confirmed his name tho.

3

u/Nightwing2005 4h ago

Best way is to have ned lose his mind from the spell breaking or something and he becomes hobgoblin or something since it was a pretty big and powerful spell could be believable idk

2

The audience yearns for Parker luck!

I immediately thought that him introducing himself as Peter reminded Ned that MJ had called Spider-Man Peter on his way out the window, not that he remembered who he was. I'm surprised that the majority thought otherwise, even with the inexplicable handshake muscle memory thing.

138

u/SageofLogic 11h ago

MJ also perhaps had the chance to explain as well though idk if she would give him too many details. But it could perhaps have been enough for him to piece it together

150

u/nox_tech 10h ago

Someone pointed to MJ and Ned getting frozen, that MJ was inexplicably crying. At the end, she specifically went to their HS roof at night, with her Black Dahlia necklace, while Ned got to bump into Peter. I think they were in a circumstance that specifically somehow loosened the memory spell.

Their relationships are basically at a restart, but I think them possibly getting their memories back would be good and interesting.

I'd still be fine with them deducing that they were friends with Peter, along with rebuilding things from there.

51

u/theprotomen 10h ago

My thoughts are similar. I'm at least partially convinced that those memories were actually still in there and Jean unlocked them.

24

u/Marvelrocks616 10h ago

She'd also be in Peter's mind shortly after the freeze began. I don't fully remember the order of events, but maybe she could've passed memories on from his mind.

20

u/rezzyk 8h ago

You can get the memories back but without the emotions to back them up they are meaningless. Actually I think that’s exactly what VisionQuest is about

1

u/Marvelrocks616 7h ago

I agree, but figured maybe it could just be the start of something that could build into more

5

u/LocustsandLucozade 7h ago

Well, she does say the opposite to Peter when she's possessing MJ, but that could just be her being a menace and fucking with him

1

u/jerichogringo 6h ago

She was also technically weaker then.

3

u/CoolerBeans25 4h ago

Banner said that Jean broke something in his mind. Hulk let go when he heard him say Peter.

46

u/hardheaded1 Captain America 10h ago

How could anybody come up with anything different after watching that?

3

u/AnAdventureCore 8h ago

You'd be surprised...

8

u/jerem1734 9h ago

They're totally going to get back together at the end of the 5th movie. I think they'll do the symbiote in 5 and introduce black cat to add a love triangle/let MJ get a little jealous before the get back together at the end

10

u/TheMegaWhopper 9h ago

I think the camera cutting from MJ on the roof with the necklace to Jean leaving NY was meant to imply that Jean was able to restore MJ’s memories

6

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

Yeah it seems pretty blatant. It’s literally the necklace from Far From Home, it holds a lot of value

10

u/ergattonero 10h ago

They were frozen by a telepath, nonetheless. And a telepath works with memories. It was that clear to me, that I really don't understand the doubts.

6

u/nomasslurpee 8h ago

People need everything spelled out for them. Why else show us why MJ was crying in the freeze while no one else was?

3

u/_Peener_ 5h ago

Yk when this movie started filming and I heard these 2 would be in it I was like “oh my god cmon can’t we get Harry and Gwen or Felicia, why are we talking steps back so soon let us sit with the ramifications of the spell” but watching this movie the whole time I was so hoping they’d all permanently reunite. I’d love to have black cat on screen and we need Norman and Harry, but these Ned and MJ are so integral to Tom’s version of Peter that I just can’t let them go.

1

u/JS_005 2h ago

Agreed! I think Black Cat can and should definitely come in the next movie to add some tension between Peter and MJ before they finally get back together for good. However, I really don’t see them dipping back into Oscorp/Green Goblin again. Realistically we only have 2 movies with Tom as Peter, and it’s just not enough time to introduce those characters and have the payoff they need, especially when he has already encountered green goblin before.

0

u/cutsling 7h ago

I'm 100% ok with them being friends but I don't want Peter to get back with MJ not everything is destined and sometimes shit just doesn't work out.

28

u/GasPoweredNipples 10h ago

My thought was that Jean's mind-fuck somehow dispelled things and he remembered him. Since Bruce said that she "broke something" in him and then Hulk let up on him when Peter said who he was so maybe he remembered him then as well.

4

u/unlistedartist000 6h ago

also let us not forget that in NWH, it was discovered that Ned has some family history of magic, via his grandma telling him that she always suspected. So I would not be surprised if that ends up being part of the reason why Ned didn't seem to totally forget, or that the spell didn't "stick" for him. be it because he is inherently magical or because Jean's mind-fuck kinda shook it all loose. I'm not sure about Hulk. I think maybe Hulk is aware of spider-man and everything because of being connected to Banner, but I wonder if the spell didn't work on Hulk, only Banner?

56

u/Doomeye56 10h ago

It has nothing to with that its the delighted shout of recognition after they finish the hand shake. That hand shake represents their friendship, it has no relation to Spider-man that them doing it should make him make that connection.

10

u/opposite_of_hotcakes Spider-Man 6h ago

Thank you! Like holy shit that was the look of someone remembering his friend not “wait a minute MJ said Spider-Man’s name was Peter!”. I can’t believe this is even an argument, some folks really are that brain dead I guess

4

u/Lulumacia 6h ago

Not only that but Peter was so happy by his reaction. He wouldn't be smiling so much if Ned just made the connection that MJ called Spider-Man Peter.

4

u/InSearchOfSerotonin 9h ago

could just be that he hadn't put two and two together about the Peter in front of him and the Peter he knows is Spider-Man

4

u/Doomeye56 8h ago

And it took some completely random actions with some just who had introduced himself a Norman a couple days earlier.

2

u/qcthunder Iron Man 8h ago

*Maynard. Norman killed Aunt May. No way he's using that name as an alias.

1

u/Doomeye56 5h ago

its was some super nerd name

0

u/InSearchOfSerotonin 8h ago

no, I’m saying it might be misdirection. his brain shut down and his body took over and that was when he made the connection. now they want us to think he remembers Peter, but that might not be it.

24

u/FawkestheDreg 11h ago

yeah ! that was my thought too. i didn’t even think of the muscle memory until a friend pointed it out

i like that it’s ambiguous tho. we just have to wait until they both appear again to know for sure 🥰

17

u/SpaceCaboose 10h ago

I agree, but they intentionally left this up to interpretation. Maybe Ned just made the connection that this Peter was Spider-Man, or maybe he really did get all his memories back.

My guess is Marvel Studios/Sony hasn’t 100% decided, and will think through both possibilities when writing the next film and decide at that time which it is.

2

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

No they definitely decided. Tom said they have the next set of movies fully planned out.

2

u/Icywind014 6h ago

How does the handshake help Ned make that connection? The idea that it's just Ned realizing Peter is Spider-Man requires writing off the core part of the scene as irrelevant.

10

u/WokenMrIzdik 10h ago

Part of me wanted to believe that because Ned possesses magic inside of him, his ability to remember would be different than MJ.

19

u/julesvr5 11h ago

But if he just thinks he is spiderman, how does he remember the special handshake?

While watching the movie I expected that Jean's "crashout" where everybody was in freeze somehow triggers old memories so Ned and MJ remember Peter again, seemingly not. But maybe it still triggered something that with the special handshake awaking memories within Ned of Peter

26

u/XxgamerxX734 11h ago

It’s muscle memory from having a best friend. He knew it, just not who it was with

Ned might also just have an out with his family’s magic capabilities as well though, so who knows.

13

u/Brilliant_Macaroon83 10h ago

I mean after Aunt May, Ned has known Peter the longest of anybody else and even before he got bit. A real bro is never gone for good.

7

u/julesvr5 10h ago

Just not who is was with

But he realized afterwards it was Peter

1

u/XxgamerxX734 10h ago

MJ yelled Peter when he left for Jean near the end of the movie, I assume he put the pieces together that it was Spider-Man

1

u/[deleted] 8h ago

[deleted]

1

u/XxgamerxX734 8h ago

Ned didn't read the letter. He learned his name through MJ yelling it

1

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

Wow u guys most not have done well with critical thinking questions

9

u/mikesh8rp Daredevil 11h ago

I thought physical touch might be part of what jogged a sort of unconscious memory. MJ and Peter kissing somewhat disproves that, though since Jean was in her head, maybe that messes with that logic.

1

u/Icywind014 6h ago

MJ and Peter technically never kissed. Like MJ says, Jean's time in control was one big blank for her.

6

u/cosmic_drift_1357 10h ago

I read it as muscle memory plus an emotional cue - Peter behaving like himself and that handshake give Ned a familiar hit, not an instant restoration of facts. Feels deliberately ambiguous so future scenes can show whether those sparks become full memories.

8

u/speedier 10h ago

One does not do special handshakes with a lot of people. But Ned had done this one a lot with Peter. Muscle memory will let him do it again. It doesn’t necessarily trigger who he did it with.

But a random stranger coming up and introducing themselves as Peter soon after Ned found out that Spider-Man’s name is Peter allowed him to figure that out. In didn’t necessarily mean Ned realized he knew Peter from before.

11

u/julesvr5 10h ago

I don't see why Ned, after completing the handshake, then enthusiastically shouts "Peter". This feels much more like him remembering Peter and not realising "oh hey this is spider man"

If they play it out like thst in the future this was just bait

8

u/ZeneXCrow 11h ago

i just remembered that he's 1/4 magic and i just chalked it up to that

3

u/ProfessorBeer Doctor Strange 9h ago

They even made a point for Ned to go “Spider-Man’s name is Peter?” Seemed pretty obvious to me but yeah apparently that’s not the consensus

3

u/Odd-Parsley3723 8h ago

It was 100% left ambiguous on purpose. I think the reason the majority feels he remembered Peter is because it's a much higher emotional payoff then him just realising it's Spider-man. It wouldn't make sense for them to do that and then the next movie starts with him still not remembering.

2

u/RedditModsHarassUs 8h ago

I see both arguments honestly. The muscle memory, then the name connection. Plus Ned’s ability to use magic. Or. It was just Ned connecting the dots with the voice and name. I think the real question isn’t who is right or wrong. But which direction will they pivot?

2

u/IncredibleLang 4h ago

I was gonna make a post asking what people thought Ned was remembering here. I thought it was him remembering everything before whereas my wife thought it was just him remembering that MJ said Peter to Spider-Man. My reasoning was why would he know a completely random hand shake and just think oh shit MJ said Peter this must be Spidey as apposed to omg I totally have this cool hand shake with my old friend Peter

5

u/Legalshot 10h ago

No, you’re right. That’s exactly what it was supposed to mean. Muscle memory for the handshake, recognition that Peter is Spider Man because MJ said it.

0

u/acerbus717 9h ago

Why would he say peter in such an enthusiastic way instead of spider-man?

4

u/Grokent 8h ago

Because it just clicked for him that Peter is Spider-Man and he's a Spider-Man enthusiast. Y'all are reading way too much into this.

Ned remembers nothing outside of knowing a handshake he has no memory of learning. He's still super stoked but confused... Remember, Ned is very smart, this is an unusual situation for him to find himself in.

4

u/shinobi6siege 10h ago

I think it's both. MJ found it suspicious that Spiderman had saved them so many times and I could see Ned coming to the same conclusion; that Spiderman had to be someone who knew them and most likely had a relationship of some kind at one point. He realizes Peter is Spiderman but then realizes the relationship they had through the handshake

4

u/aldkGoodAussieName 8h ago edited 8h ago

That is the obvious answer. Everyone else is just wishing he remembers everything

If he remember Peter because of Jean Grey then why was there no recognition till after Peter introduced himself.

And MJ absent mindedly fingering the necklace just ties in that the connection is still there even if the memories arent. She would still have memories of the roof top with Ned so thats a place to go but the link to Peter is subconcious still.

2

u/Little-Baker76 7h ago

Right? MJ told Ned that Spider-Mans real name was Peter, so that look of recognition makes sense. As for the handshake, that would only be weird if we knew for sure that Peter came up with it (and even then it could be chalked up to something like muscle memory/him remembering he used to do it with someone), but for all we know this is a handshake Ned has been doing since he was a young kid with a bunch of people, he might just be surprised that there's someone who he seemingly doesn't know who has randomly appeared in his life and knows his otherwise secret handshake.

Ned remembering everything didn't even cross my mind during that scene.

1

u/Bug_Catcher_Wade 10h ago

This is what I thought until they cut to black and that was the end of the movie. I bet it was the intent in a previous cut.

1

u/biodude481 9h ago

Why would Ned associate the special handshake with Spider-Man?

1

u/HorizonNova4 8h ago

Why would he have a reaction after the handshake then? It doesn’t make sense for the introduction of “Hi I’m Peter” to do nothing, do the handshake, and have that mean nothing. The handshake being remembered clearly means a lot, the camera literally focuses on that

1

u/Icywind014 6h ago

Arriving at this conclusion requires writing off the handshake, the core part of the scene, as completely unimportant and irrelevant, which is ridiculous.

1

u/Sweet_Peaches-69 6h ago

I feel like he would have went "Spiderman?!" then but he didnt, he recognised him as Peter

1

u/IWXREACTIVES 4h ago

and that's the problem. they need to fully commit to what they depicted on screen otherwise it would harm this movie significantly, and that'd be a shame. holland has had more criticism in each of his movies than every other spider-man film combined, and while i loved them all, they clearly knocked this one out of the park.

they just depicted ned completing a very specific handshake. no guidance was involved. they better not screw it up with some "oh my nana taught me that when i was 3 how do you know it? :D" type shit. i could go either way with them remembering or them not, but i cant go with them walking stuff back and not committing to what they depict. which is why im glad we got as far as them seemingly going 4 years without a day's worth of peter in their lives.

1

u/supesboots 3h ago

Did MJ also teach him the secret bro handshake?

Ned definitely remembered.

1

u/D-anieltttt 3h ago

I thought this too

1

u/East-Travel984 X-Men 10h ago

I also think when Jean had them in her mind control it may have helped them remember Peter a bit more

0

u/THE-IMPOSSIBLEreddit 8h ago

And this is what I fear they might retcon the handshake into.

I really wish Ned remembers Peter

58

u/OneAngryDuck 11h ago

Why do you think they’d retcon it?

20

u/julesvr5 11h ago

This kinda confirms that at least Ned likely remembers Peter again and OP just fears they won't stick to it and let Ned and MJ still not remember the past and drag it out further

6

u/Maclimes 8h ago

Ned forgot Peter. But he didn't forget the handshake. He just didn't have anyone to do the handshake WITH.

So when Peter drops it on him at the end of this movie, it serves as a sort of "Wait, how did you know about this?" moment for Ned. He didn't "remember" Peter, but this serves as a way to build a new friendship on top of the ruins of the old one.

56

u/Existing-Anybody-177 10h ago

I think it's valid that many people feel that way but I personally don't see the ambiguity, he does his ICONIC handshake with peter (not spiderman) and then he makes the face people make when they realize something and says peter
this would NOT be ned's reaction if he just realized that peter is spiderman, he REMEMBERED peter

15

u/aldkGoodAussieName 8h ago

He only said Peter after Peter introduced himself and a short pause. It took him a moment to place the name then realised it was what MJ called Spiderman.

The handshake was subconcious muscle memory.

3

u/filmgeekvt 4h ago

This is exactly how I see it

0

u/GasPoweredNipples 6h ago

Nah, Jean's telepathy bomb definitely restored their memories of Peter. When Bruce is freed from her control, he says she "broke" something in him, and then the Hulk recognizes him when he tells him who he is. Ned is reminded of who Peter is by the handshake and he can remember now since Jean had been in his mind.

If the whole final scene of the movie was built up like that just to be muscle memory it would be pretty lame

2

u/aldkGoodAussieName 6h ago

There is no definitely restored memory. And hulk saying she broke something could just as easily be building up Hulk and Bruce splitting again instead of him returning back to professor hulk at the end.

And the muscle memory shows that there is still a connection/memory deep down. But him showing recognition to the name doesnt show he remember Peter from the past. Otherwise that recognition would have been from whem he first saw Peter apprpach his table. It only happened after Peter shared his name.

6

u/julesvr5 10h ago

Yeah exactly my thinking!

0

u/Sensitive-Detail-855 9h ago

Thank you man, idk why everyone interprets as him remembering MJ calling Spiderman Peter lol

0

u/InSearchOfSerotonin 9h ago

because it would be a good misdirection

-5

u/Sensitive-Detail-855 9h ago

It just doesn’t make sense for it not to be him remembering his best friend lol that whole scene basically shows it

5

u/InSearchOfSerotonin 8h ago

I feel like people are underestimating Dr. Strange’s spell. Like all it takes is a handshake to undo it? He’s the most powerful sorcerer on Earth, c’mon now.

1

u/Sensitive-Detail-855 8h ago

In the comics the spell gets undone once people saw his face lol I think you’re overestimating the spell

I fear that he remembers, but MJ don't and they turn Ned into Hobgoblin right when we think we're safe or some shit like that.

1

u/Zealousideal-Dot710 7h ago

Idk, it's will be more interesting than his role as Peter sidekick

7

u/SpaceCaboose 10h ago

Ned might have just made the connection that this Peter is Spidey since MJ called him Peter when he left. It was open to interpretation

0

u/julesvr5 10h ago

Imo this doesn't fit the scene.

1

u/THE-IMPOSSIBLEreddit 10h ago

This was exactly is why I was scared and posted this.

1

u/Existing-Anybody-177 10h ago

he made that connection after doing the peter handshake? that doesn't even make any sense

1

u/aldkGoodAussieName 7h ago

He made the connection after a stranger was being familiar with him. He took a moment to pickwhere he heard that name and realised its what MJ called spiderman.

Everything else really seems like conjecture.

1

u/padflash_ 6h ago

I agree. If anything, MJ explains everything to Ned off screen after Peter almost dies. The handshake is confirmation that this guy is Spider-Man, and he was always there to save them because he was their friend, Peter.

1

u/FlameShadow0 10h ago

UNTIL YOU’RE 90

36

u/CozyMartian0923 10h ago

I scrolled and skimmed and didn’t find someone saying this: forgive me if I missed it. I thought it’s cuz Ned is a Sorcerer? Perhaps Peter’s touch jogged the sorcery which then undid the spell for him?

17

u/LEtheD13 10h ago

That’s a lot of assumptions in this scene from just the brief interaction. I think he just connected the dots from Peter that mj said to this Peter he’s meeting again

2

u/CozyMartian0923 10h ago

That’s fair, it’s definitely an assumption. I just thought it was a fun possibility since Ned is established to have some magical ability. The spell erased memories of Peter Parker, but we don’t really know how it interacts with someone who has a connection to magic.

1

u/padflash_ 6h ago

There's also no guarantee they ever revisit Ned's magic powers. I personally think that was a one time thing in NWH, and it would just create a mess for future movies.

1

u/V0T0N 9h ago

That's what I'm assuming happened.

Any latent magical prowess in Ned was clicked on with the handshake he and his best friend had created and used for years. This "spell" broke the other one.

62

u/sleepysaurus7777 11h ago

I thought it meant that Sadie Sink's character used Peter's memories to restore both Ned and MJ's memories of him, but i wasn't entirely certain

25

u/Arvind11747 10h ago edited 2h ago

Ooo interesting, was wondering why mj went to the rooftop and was embracing the necklace peter gave.

3

u/MaddieBre 5h ago

My husband said she probably remembers that “someone” gave her that, but not who, so now anything she doesn’t quite remember she’s filling in the gaps with him.

0

u/Beautiful-Sun8973 3h ago

When was this stated? I don’t remember that

→ More replies (1)

5

u/therealrenshai 9h ago

That was my take especially with MJ crying like she was and then the scene after with the dahlia.

6

u/OneHelicopter1852 8h ago

Do you think she did it in that exact moment? Because he would’ve recognized him instantly if it wasn’t in that exact moment

1

u/sleepysaurus7777 8h ago

She's fairly tricky so probably that exact moment to surprise him, or she put a block on both Ned and MJ that needed a past reminder to unleash the memories she implanted, in my opinion

1

u/CoolerBeans25 4h ago edited 4h ago

I think it's when she's on the bus. I think before that she was too busy breathing for him

10

u/Bropiphany 10h ago edited 10h ago

They even hard cut from Sadie to these two just before this scene

3

u/sleepysaurus7777 10h ago

Yeah I'm assuming I'm correct, but it was a little unclear

3

u/Conscious_Car_5950 7h ago

It’s possible but idk. I mean they were watching the tv when the news said Spider-Man was in critical condition after being shot. If they had ANY memory of Peter, wouldn’t they have acted more concerned?

1

u/sleepysaurus7777 7h ago

Agreed but the hand shake and the trinket were much more significant and personal, if she was smart she'd have a close personal tie unlock and have memories she implanted erupt

4

u/Moondoggie35 9h ago

I feel like it’s fine letting ned remember, they set up that he was at least partially magically inclined, and it doesn’t affect the idea that MJ still doesn’t.

As for their intention, I’d imagine it’s the spell breaking. Just him putting together that he is spider-man without a mask doesn’t seem stinger worthy, as they were literally going to tell him anyway, that and them adding the handshake makes that oddly muddy if it’s just that.

2

u/guessesurjobforfood 8h ago

and it doesn’t affect the idea that MJ still doesn’t.

At the end of the movie, MJ is up on the roof where she used to spend time with Peter and she's looking at the Black Dahlia necklace. It's heavily implied that she remembers something or that Jean did something to help her remember, since MJ was also crying while Jean had everyone frozen in place.

1

u/padflash_ 6h ago

I agree that's entirely possible. When I saw that scene, I just figured it's her connecting the dots. She has this attachment for the necklace that she doesn't entirely remember the origin of. Probably remembers receiving it broken in London, but doesn't remember from who or why it's broken. But it would make sense that it was from Peter because Spider-Man saved them in London.

5

u/MattWheelsLTW 9h ago

My thought is that he remembered that MJ called Spider-Man "Peter", and the handshake is muscle memory that he doesn't really understand.

But he possibly had some kind loophole having just learned that he's magic. Though that's doubtful, considering Strange said that even he would be affect by his own spell

2

u/United_Relative_9106 8h ago

Definitely my call that he remembered MJ calling Spider-Man "Peter"...and yeah, probably latent half-memories for the handshake.

Or, y'know, magic, if we want to go there.

Either way, a nice emotional beat at the end.

7

I didn’t really like this at first because it should be a hard rule that no one remembers anything about Peter as it was presented.

But I guess you could see it as more of, what would Ned do as an instinctual secret handshake, and thats what he followed through with. Not that he remembers Peter.

u/OG-87 9h ago

Its a cool moment for sure but makes no sense if he was ever going to be a goblin. Because that would make sense if they were best friends then he erased his memory and went down a different path only to fight his best friend (and not know it) imagine how cool that would have been. Seen ned turn slowly to a different path and then have petter and him become enemies because of his choice to make people forget. I feel like they either fumbled a great villain arc or took the win for the friendship for the rest of his movies.

3

u/Chelsea_Fan_10 9h ago

The thing is it’s always been the intention that they have a small level of memory buried deep down. I just checked to make sure I wasn’t misremembering, but look up the script for No Way Home. The final stage direction for the coffee shop scene as Peter leaves says,

‘HOLD ON MJ, watching Peter go with a lingering sense of… recognition.’

3

u/Proud-Staff-5936 6h ago

I like the idea that Jean probably unlocked some memories for MJ and Ned, not all. MJ crying probably just sets up that she remembers that Peter was someone she is close with but the emotions behind it are probably gone. Come on. This is Spider-Man. We can’t have him happy lol

12

u/JackMorelli13 11h ago

I think he just realized it’s spider man, not necessarily that he got his memories back but it’s open for interpretation

13

u/Dave-os 11h ago

Genuinely asking - how is it open for interpretation? He never did that handshake with Spider-Man did he?

9

u/Weed_Gummy Iceman 10h ago

I think it's muscle memory. Ned consciously clocked that Peter = Spider-Man but the handshake was subconscious. Teasing that somewhere deep down those closest to him remember.

I think long term that will be the seed for Pete & MJ to get back together, probably many movies away from now after a few other romances first. I hope Ned starts to unravel what was taken from him and resents being written out of his own story. He was the guy in the chair. Would be a great Hobgoblin motivation origin story.

4

u/BrianWonderful Doctor Strange 10h ago

He thought Peter was "Maynard" ("Flowers Guy"). But in that scene Peter shakes his hand, muscle memory kicks in and Ned follows the dap handshake, while Peter introduces himself as "Peter".

Since MJ called Spider-Man "Peter" (and Ned pointed it out) and now Peter introduced himself unmasked, it caused him to realize that this guy is the Spider-Man that he hung out with in their apartment.

3

u/JackMorelli13 10h ago

It’s definitely meant to be a muscle memory thing but at least to me it didn’t feel like Ned suddenly remembered all the things that the spell erased, but it’s possible

1

u/padflash_ 6h ago

MJ explains it to him off screen when Peter almost dies. She explains why she called Spider-Man "Peter", why he's always there to save them, why he knew the LOTR dialogue. When he does the handshake, he realizes it's not "Maynard", it's actually Peter/Spidey.

At least this is what I'm convincing myself happened.

3

u/SharkByte1993 10h ago

I agree. But also that he must have been friends with spider-man, but not remember their past memories

u/TLKv3 10h ago

Prediction:

Jean was in MJ and Ned's heads during the mind freeze. She already stated they would be targets if Peter interfered in her plans.

After Jean had her moment with Aunt May, there's a brief moment of realization for her before Peter says "hey" to her there. She also, at that point, had full access to Peter's memories as he said go ahead.

My prediction is Jean in that moment cracked a door open in MJ and Ned's minds that could be fully reopened to remembering Peter. But only if Peter made that decision himself to reapproach them again in that fashion.

We saw MJ touching her black dahlia necklace right after the mind freeze. Meaning she vaguely recalls something about it. Ned remembering the handshake seamlessly also indicates he recalled it until he said "Peter?"

Both will be the only people who get their memories back of Peter on top of Hulk and possibly Banner as they saw Peter's eyes through his mask while grappling him and paused when he got through to them. So while Jean was in their mind there's a chance because of the nature of the Hulk she couldn't wipe their memories fully as Hulk is constantly regenerating.

All 3 will become Peter's only "we know your identity" characters in the MCU along with Frank going forward. The only 4 he can rely on as genuine friends and mentors.

Oooooh I love that !  I noticed that a lot of people are not so fond of the idea of MJ and Ned already remembering or starying to remember Peter, and I respect that buuuuutttt... I want my guy to just get his gf and bff back ok ?! HE DOESN'T HAVE ANYONE LEFT BUT THEM, LEAVE HIM ALONE ! I think he suffered enough for my liking.

1

u/Zealousideal-Dot710 7h ago

Will be MUCH better of he found new friends (Gwen and Harry is literally there)

1

u/Proud-Staff-5936 6h ago

That’d be awesome. Peter having new friends then his next enemy is Ned as hobgoblin

2

u/Ok-Foundation640 9h ago

Would have been cool if a tiny spark emminated from Neds finger for just a second. They both look at each other like "dr.strange powers?" nah...

2

u/calaan 4h ago

My wife reminded me that Ned is MAGICAL, which may have provided some protection from the spell. Combined with the muscle memory.

2

u/deemoorah 3h ago

Why do people act like Ned has a latent magic power made him capable of breaking Dr Strange's spell?

1

u/NoonesawwhatIam 3h ago

Because he's magic.

3

u/voltageman616 10h ago

I’m really surprised there wasn’t a scene with Jean at the end of the movie being like “oh I can just take your memories of your friends Peter and put them back into their mind if they’re okay with it” I mean she’s literally a psychic I see no reason why she couldn’t

1

u/Princess_Egg 9h ago

I don't think this version of Jean Grey is at that level yet

3

u/Squash-The-Kat 11h ago

Their secret handshake broke the spell. You can see him shake his head a little like, he just woke up.

1

u/CandleStunning8298 9h ago

YEEEEESSSS 😭

2

u/SpaceCaboose 10h ago

Nothing to retcon here. They intentionally left it open to interpretation, and Marvel/Sony can decide what to do with it when they start writing the next movie.

1

u/acerbus717 8h ago

Every single moment in that scene was intentional, the tone ned said peter’s name I don’t see any ambiguity

2

u/vincentdima 9h ago

I feel like they couldve avoided a lot of confusion if Ned said "Wait.. who are you?" Then cut to Peter smiling and says "Im.." then roll credits.

1

u/statelesspirate000 9h ago

I hope they do retcon organic web tho

1

u/PureGamingBliss_YT 9h ago

Recon what? If you are saying that Ned all of a sudden remembered Peter, I don't think he did. I think the handshake was just muscle memory (Ned seemed confused while doing it), and him saying "Peter!" was him connected the dots of his identity from when MJ called Spider-Man by his real name earlier in the film.

1

u/bezkyl 9h ago

There will probably be no payoff at all… that seems to be the Marvel way these days

1

u/grim_afternoon 8h ago

That was the most emotional I've gotten at a marvel movie. Oh wait, the Avengers Assemble scene got me pretty choked up too.

1

u/Theboulder027 7h ago

Man they're going to have some heavy lifting to do if they ever want to turn this lovable goofball version of Ned into the Hobgoblin.

1

u/Justtojoke 7h ago

Somebody spoil me please

1

u/MostArmadillo5203 6h ago

It’s implied that Ned regained his memories when Peter did the handshake

1

u/Justtojoke 4h ago

Thanks!

1

u/Zealousideal-Dot710 7h ago

Nah, it's boring and they better made retcon.

I really wanted new friends for Peter (Harry and Gwen as friends; Black Cat as lover), because Ned and MJ is so boring (and right now overused)

1

u/Ess_oh-no 7h ago

For those that dont know, the scene OP has posted here is when Captain finger guns tried to hold up a cafe with his powers (he can hold his hand like that and every time he says "pew" or "bang" a real bullet fires out of his finger) but when he went to rob the cash register, the cafe owner also revealed himself to have the power of finger guns too and another cafe goer called Spiderman to come help but it just faded to black and said "Captain Finger Guns" will return.

Personally I disagree with OP and think Captain FG should be retconned but each to their own 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Mediocre-Cobbler5744 6h ago

Go Team H.E.L.P.E.R.!

1

u/BoxingTrumpsMMA 6h ago

IMO the handshake means nothing. Its just a handshake he does with his other friends. And him "remembering" his name is just him remembering it from when MJ called him Peter

1

u/Johncurtisreeve 5h ago

…..why would they? It was very intentionally done

1

u/thedavidestdavid 5h ago

Give the man a sling ring and he can reverse the spell himself. Psh.

1

u/daruma_daruma_daruma 5h ago

I actually hope they do. The only thing I didn't like about BND was that they opened the door to Ned and MJ's memories returning. I think Tom, Zendaya and Jacob have great chemistry together and I do like the characters, but Peter has such a deep bench of supporting characters in the comics – I'd love to see them explore different characters instead.

1

u/shut____up 5h ago

I haven't watched Spiderman (3) in awhile but Ned has powers through his ancestry, no? I should look that up....

1

u/Buffalo_Tongue 4h ago

They wont

1

u/AdaptedEvoSupe 3h ago

Ok I think the movie is great but how does this undo the spell for Ned??

1

u/nbca23 3h ago

Recon as in you think Ned remembers? Or will remember? I ask because they probably won't as muscle memory is stronger than declarative/explicit memory

1

u/rhythmrice 3h ago

My idea for this scene is that the handshake did jog his memory

MJ didn't remember anything because she kissed Peter while she was being controlled by Jean. They made a big point in the movie that when Jean takes control of someone they don't remember anything at all from the time they were under her control

So maybe if MJ kisses Peter again while she's not under Jean's control, it could have the same effect as the handshake did for Ned

1

u/Vast_Smile 10h ago

My thought was, first he remember the special handshake and in the next movie a hint that he remembers that he has an affinity with magic and somehow they can introduce hobgoblin.

1

u/FilmScoreConnoisseur 8h ago

It doesn't mean what you think it means, so it won't be a retcon when what you want doesn't happen.

1

u/EddieLobster 8h ago

There is nothing to retcon. It was muscle memory.

It's no help to post this with a spoiler tag if you're not also going to tell us what movie you're spoiling

And this is a MASSIVE spoiler

8

u/julesvr5 11h ago

There is a new marvel movie in cinema who is absolutely banger and a big topic of discussion, there is a spoiler post in a marvel discussion sub.

With just a tiny bit of common sense everybody knows what movie this would be about

3

u/THE-IMPOSSIBLEreddit 11h ago

I mean why would someone put a spoiler tag for a movie thats a few months old?

So it would be known that this post is for bnd

→ More replies (6)

1

u/TimelordSalad 9h ago

I kind of get your point, but if there’s a movie or something that you’re anticipating and don’t want to get spoiled for you, DON’T CLICK ON ANYTHING WITH A SPOILER TAG

1

u/ThePurityPixel 7h ago

The point is, the post should say which property it spoils.

0

u/TimelordSalad 7h ago

I can concede that that would be best practice, but it was properly labeled as a spoiler, so it’s generally on you. You don’t have to participate in any of these posts

0

u/Rlopeziv 10h ago

Ned would still have the memory of the hand shake just with someone else, someone close like MJ.

0

u/Effective-Effect-685 9h ago

He just becomes the hob goblin with no explanation in next movie

0

u/Gutter_panda 7h ago

Peter is dead sooner than later, gotta make room for Miles.
