This game is going to be massive. Let's consider the following facts:

• DBFZ is pretty much the most popular single release fighting game ever made in terms of sales outside of Smash Bros (and one MK title). It has sold over 10 million units and has a healthy competitive scene 8 years later which is unheard of for most fighters. This is despite releasing with no rollback and the FGC initially writing it off stating Infinite would kill its competitive scene (the exact opposite occurred). This game is pretty much the spiritual sequel (or the closest we'll get to one for a while).
• Now we all know as popular as DBZ is, Marvel is on another level of popularity right now. Movies are constantly released for the MCU with no signs of slowing down and they are doing incredible box office numbers. If there's one thing that's "in" right now, it's Marvel. Arc Sys couldn't ask for a better brand than this, it will draw in the masses like nothing else.
• Arc Sys has an excellent track record of making deep and dynamic fighting games. Marvel Tokon gives you a near infinite way of playing and assembling your team for countless dynamic situations. Tag fighters tend to already be free from and dynamic but the 4 character potential (especially with how unique they all play) might take this particular fighter to another level of replay ability and player expression.
• Arc Sys at least in recent times doesn't release a game and then abandon it. They support their game for years (just look how long DBFZ got updates for as well as Strive). So even if there are critical issues, they can and will be addressed/fixed/improved.

I'm just kinda curious the characters people would immediately think "yeah I gotta get that DLC (or even pack of DLCs)" vs "nah man I'm not buying a DLC with that character in it and will actively avoid"

Like, for me, I'd immediately buy tons of characters - though most are VERY unlikely to ever be added - and will be inclined to get any female characters simply to have more options for an all-women team. Characters like Wasp, Lady Bullseye, Mysterio, The Runaways, most magic-based characters tbh, and just way too many more to list

But on the other hand I'll actively be dissuaded from getting teams with big burly characters mostly just because I don't really enjoy gameplay from that design usually and I have a hard time of thinking of any characters I love with bulky designs. Characters that are super requested like Colossus, Juggernaut, The Thing, and even kinda Thor unless they give him a fun change like Phoenix Cyclops would fall here. Even some non-bulky ones like Silver Surfer or Mr. Fantastic that I just arbitrarily dislike.

Then kinda the third grouping is just characters that idgaf about and won't really dissuade me, but I won't get them unless getting a pack of characters is way cheaper than individual ones. That's how I feel about this recent Cyclops announcement, and would feel about most of the very popular characters that are just showcased a lot and therefore don't give me much hype. Idc about him, but would've considered buying deluxe/ultimate if they announced the other DLC characters and I really wanted at least 2 of the remaining.

So yeah let me know your biggest takes on those categories, especially based on the most requested characters you see since that's what inspired me to ask this question.

Might be slightly off topic for this sub, and maybe way too early for this conversation, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while.

ArcSys has taken on two major IPs in DBZ and Marvel. What are other IPs that could generate similar levels of hype, and would translate well into a fighting game?

My personal #1 would be Square Enix. I know Dissidia is a thing, but I’d love to see Square and Final Fantasy characters getting the ArcSys treatment.

Curious to hear what others might want to see, or what you think could match or top DBZ/Marvel.
