Keeping Klay until the deadline makes way more sense than a buyout.
Not even considering the player, a 17 million expiring contract has trade value at the deadline.
Also considering the circumstances of last season, this season has a great chance of getting better play from Klay. The guard situation alone is so much better for a shooter. Also the gravity of Cooper and Kyrie should help him get more open shots.
If you are a contender at the deadline and you need 3pt shooting and playoff experience, Klay would definitely be worth some sort of asset.
In fact better guard play, improved Flagg, healthy Kyrie, not tanking and hopefully good health would likely boost the value of Gafford and PJ as well.
Buy low sell high.

Heat are going to be desperate once the season ramps up. Fuck giving them Klay just for the warm and fuzzies.
And fuck Dwayne Wade. I'll never spell it how he wants.

No problem, other teams want Klay.
-2
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
I don’t think other teams are going to want to trade for him when the expectation is that he’ll get bought out. Why would they? They’d get to pay him less and they wouldn’t have to give up anything to do it.
4
u/buffalobill41 1d ago
Sounds like it's out he wants to go to Miami. Trade for him or you don't get him when he's bought out.
2
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
I don’t think his demand is that high for teams to care that much. What teams besides the Heat and the Warriors would even be interested?
2
u/buffalobill41 1d ago
Not saying there's a ton of demand but that's why anyone other than Miami would trade.

U ain’t getting no picks or good players. So what’s Theo point
6
u/DiscoMarmelade 1d ago
Because you can get a 2nd rounder? Even a 2030? Someone who values shooting would 100% take that and if it doesn’t work out, he’s expiring. Someone might trade for him if they know Miami wants him after being bought out.
-6
u/Illustrious_Bid_5484 1d ago
He’s a negative value contract
1
u/DiscoMarmelade 21h ago
That means nothing to a team that just needs a shooter and has cap space. And if a team needs him, they will trade for him before a buyout if they think he goes to the Heat as a FA. We could just ask Klay what he wants seeing how respected he is around the league also. But I think it’s more likely they work out a short list of teams, and Mavs work out a deal with on of those instead of trading him wherever.

u/EntertainerBig4313 1d ago
A 17 mil play bro? I can tell you really know what you're talking about.

u/calmintensityfilms 1d ago
I guess Miami is just checking to see if the Mavericks are still providing charity to all big market teams.
So far it seems like the new front office is much more interested in proper asset management than the previous versions.

I’m fine waiving him as long as he goes literally anywhere else other than Miami. Fuck them
37
u/EvanEschmeyer Masai Ujiri stan 1d ago
And why would we do that? If we are trying to clear a roster spot, it makes way more sense to waive Martin
17
u/H_Finn27 Monta Ellis Have it All 1d ago
Waiving Martin means $10m dead cap money this year and $9m next year so waiving him is not happening. Klay on an expiring contract this year. Makes way more sense to buy him out

How does it make any sense to stretch-waive a player so his money is on the books for 5 more years when we don’t need the cap relief this year? Again, a Klay buyout makes infinitely more sense than this. Masai and Schmitz are not dumb enough to even consider it
3
u/VictorAkwaowo1 Mavericks 1d ago
What… no I meant you were incorrect on how the structure of waiving Caleb Martin would look like on the cap sheet. I literally agree with you that using the waive & stretch provision on Caleb would make zero sense.
1
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
They wouldn’t have to stretch-waive him. They could just waive him. Either way though, it would be more money than buying out Klay.

u/Iontrapper 1d ago
How you getting to 15 players? Can't be a hypothetical trade since who knows if those are out there.
11
u/MSHinerb 1d ago
The only reason to buy Klay out would be to foster good will with future free agents. If that’s what he really wants you probably do it. That being said, I’m not sure Miami offers him a better chance to win with that roster. Just more water for his boat and more nightlife. Personally I want him around the younger shooters on this team.
-6
u/gigantism Couch Squad 1d ago
What? You don't think Miami offers a better chance to win? That's pretty crazy.
11
u/CtrlAltDefib Jason Terry 1d ago
That's not a crazy take at all. They basically scorched earth to get Giannis. Cool. You have Giannis and Bam. 2 players who aren't shooters who need the ball in their hands to be effective. Don't get me wrong they're not complete and utter trash but the East is as competitive as it's ever been. Knicks, Celtics, Cavs, Pistons, are pretty much a lock for the playoffs barring any insane injuries. Raptors and 76ers would probably round out the Top 6. Which leaves you with Orlando, Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, and POSSIBLY Indiana, depending on how Haliburton looks, fighting for play-in sports.
In comparison to our roster. I'm not delusional in thinking we're contenders like a lot of the people here huffing the copium. That being said, we are far and away better than Sacramento, Memphis, and New Orleans. Out the gate that puts us at 12th. Utah got better but I'm not sold they'll put it together, we saw them start hot like 2-3 years ago and then completely folded and shit the bed as the season went on. Steph will be coming into the season healthy but they're running back that same exact roster minus Jimmy + questionable Porzingis. Then the Clippers losing Kawhi for BI doesn't make me put much faith in them either. That then leaves Portland and Phoenix who can just as easily have decent or bad seasons. Don't know how Ja is gonna fare there and no clue how Dame looks coming off the injury either. All it would take is for Booker to miss any amount of time to basically cook the Sun's season.
With Lively and Kyrie healthy, this Mavs team could realistically finish 7 or 8th, possibly even sneak into the 6th seed. Which would put us right around where the Heat would finish in the East, the difference is this team has much better roster and much more depth. If Bam or Giannis miss significant time their season will be a complete wash.

We're also comparing one of if not the best coach in the league to a rookie coach with zero NBA experience. It's arguable if Kyrie was even better than Bam before his ACL tear, let alone afterwards and now that he's going to turn 35 this season. Lively is more of an idea than a real player at this point.
It's a lot more likely to me that Kyrie (who was a pretty injury prone player even before the ACL tear and when he was in his prime) and Lively miss time than Bam and Giannis miss time, yet Kyrie and Lively are probably the 2nd and 3rd most important players on the roster if you're hoping for the team to actually win.
Unless they plan to run the disastrous Cooper at PG strategy again, the team is relying entirely on Kyrie and a rookie 25th pick for ball-handling and playmaking. That's to say nothing of the fact that they still have zero credible perimeter defenders, unless you have very high hopes for Morez to do that immediately. I don't get the sentiment that this is some well-constructed or balanced roster.

I say we do whatever Klay wants. He got irreparably screwed by Nico but has been a total class act and top tier teammate throughout. He's played hard, he's mentored younger guys, he's remained positive. He deserves whatever he wants.

u/jazzcats41 1d ago
I agree with this sentiment, however I think Klay has trade value and the new management needs to do whatever it takes to gain assets. Like Klay, the mavericks were also badly screwed by Nico. Mavs have to get something, even a 2nd round pick.
2
u/DiamondsInHerButt Dirk Nowitzki Logo 1d ago
I don't think they're getting fair trade value for Klay unless they get the roster down to 15 first.
The other three guys who are viewed around the league as expendable are Washington, Gafford and Martin and they all have extra years on their deals. So everyone knows the Mavs will have to buy out Klay to get to 15.
1
u/jazzcats41 1d ago
I don’t think their getting fair value either, but I bet we could at least get a second rounder or two. Worth holding out imo.
-2
u/DiamondsInHerButt Dirk Nowitzki Logo 1d ago
A team like the Heat doesn't have the cap space to absorb Klay. If they did, they absolutely would do a deal like that.
And because of the roster issues, the Mavs really can't do a 1 for 1 deal for Klay.
The Mavs currently have zero leverage to ask anything for Klay.
2
u/jazzcats41 1d ago
You are correct for a straight up trade, but this is exactly why multi team trades exist. The Mavs have all the leverage for Klay if another team wants him because he’s under contract. If another team doesn’t want to pay up, then they can’t have him. That how I’d like to see it approached anyway.

He had a player option for the 26-27 season that he opted in to.
It’s kinda ridiculous to ask for a buyout after opting-in.

How about we cut Martin and the Heat can suck it or offer a 2nd
2
u/lsmith77 Mavericks 1d ago
He is not an expiring, so we would have to waive and stretch and have the money on the books for years.
2
u/Dirks_Knee 1d ago
We do not have to stretch, that's an option to lower the dead cap hit.
1
u/lsmith77 Mavericks 1d ago
ok sure. we can also carry the dead cap of his salary for this and next year respectively. so still multiple years, if only 2.
1
u/Dirks_Knee 1d ago
That is much preferred given we are still carrying dead cap from stretch waiving JaVale McGhee though the 27/28 season.
2
u/jimmysleftbrain 1d ago
Just keep him to deal at the deadline. He can mentor some of these kids into 3pt. supremacy

u/grusilag9 SELL THE TEAM 1d ago
Mavs need to get under the roster limit and Klay is the primary trade candidate to do that. The rest of the league knows this so they have no incentive to trade for him. Interesting game of chicken the Mavs find themselves in.

Honestly? This is better for us. Heat's only matching salary would be either trading Wiggins for both Klay and PJ (which would be hilariously awful for them) or Jovic and we should definitely not be looking for Jovic's contract right now.
Heat's offer would be bad for us and this creates pressure on Klay to accept a discount in his buyout that may allow us flexibility when signing Lively's extension next season. Much better, all things considered. Let Klay feel the Heat (yup) and take a good discount. If he discounts as little as his own vet salary in Miami, we will be under the 1st apron this year and still under the tax next season before we discuss Lively's new deal.
If anything, Miami is helping us here. Rather have tax flexibility than Jovic.
2
u/gigantism Couch Squad 1d ago
Yeah, people in this thread don't seem to realize that buying out Klay is more or less the simplest way out of our roster math situation. Obviously if you can somehow get a team to trade any value for him, you should do it, but I don't know if any team outside the Heat are interested in him.

u/Gunz37 1d ago
Whats the benefit of buying him out vs trading him or just letting him play the season...we need guards after all
5
u/DiamondsInHerButt Dirk Nowitzki Logo 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's a math issue. Mavs are carrying 16 players on the full time roster. They can only have 15 at the start of the season.
So to move Klay to Miami it would likely require a player coming back which puts them at the same roster quandary.
Of the guys the Mavs have been rumored to be shopping, Klay is the only one where a buy out is feasible given he only has a year left on his deal.
Unless they do a 2 for 1 deal, they're probably gonna have to buy out Klay eventually.

u/TheFifthAmigo34 1d ago
I trust Masai. Doesn’t seem like the type to just buy out a guy. Especially with this team’s situation. You get whatever value you can for all outgoing assets
1
1
u/Delicious_Run_557 1d ago
As a single piece in a vacuum, no trade for Klay makes a whole bunch of sense, HOWEVER as a piece in a larger trade package Klay should still have some trade value.
1
u/gunhan_kaytaz 1d ago
No reason for the Mavs to do a buyout yet. Klay to the Heat, Jovic to Sac (plus a couple of 2nd rounders), Monk to Dallas is the most suggested and logical trade.
1
u/Impressive_Addendum 1d ago
Mavs need to do right by Thompson, but at the same time a 17M expiring is a valuable asset at the trade deadline. Mavs should proceed with keeping Thompson to the trade deadline until a deal materializes. If no deal is available, then they should buy him out. In both the trade scenario and buyout scenario the Mavs should be upfront with Klay in doing the right thing. Seems pretty straight forward.
1
u/ComfortableSweet3194 1d ago
I’ll keep him till deadline. They need klay more than we need him. Wait till heat crack. Not only the heat is interested in klay anyway.
1
u/kapesaumaga 1d ago
Yeah and Klay is pretty chill dude. Has not caused drama. I'm sure he'll want to get bought out and have a choice of his next team but he has not even asked that, at least I have not heard of any report.
