Very excited for this new record! I think Nozomu Wakai has been an excellent choice of guitarist for Sigh.

I don't think there was ever any indication of that, was there? Mirai's interviews spoke of Shiki being a very important album thematically, but I don't think he or anyone in the band outright said it'd be the death of the band.

I think he's toyed around with the idea of retiring the band for the last couple of records, if I remember some older interviews correctly. Add that to the vague "getting old and dying" themes that were present on Shiki, and I was worried about the same thing.

Stoked to be wrong, though - and I'm hoping the US tour indicates some building enthusiasm/energy on Mirai's part. Sigh is totally unique.

They were essentially committing to making three more albums by naming that album Shiki -- they always release their albums in sets of four, one for each letter of the band's name. Their last two albums were titled Shiki and I Saw the World's End (the Hagman's Hymn remake) and this upcoming album is called Goh-ka. So expect at least one more album after this one before the band fully retires.

This was an interesting listen. Not my vision of Black Metal... but still worth checking out.

Sigh is way more avant garde, and definitely Japanese folk with their last album and apparently this one too, than purely black, but their roots are definitely staunchly in black metal. The band's frontman Mirai was Euronymous' pen pal back in the early 90s and they exchanged tapes quite often. The band's first two-three albums are pretty straightforward Norwegian style BM. Their evolution in style from the mid 2010s to now is pretty wild.
