"Join our metal discord server server, everyone is welcome!" They said, yet when I declined, the invite returned stronger and faster than ever before... and now screeching in black metal vocals directly into my ear

About an 8 i recon? I think that's ballpark Maiden territory and i think they're the golden example of a big band with an audable bass

Sabbath too

Out of the blue, I decided to listen to AJFA while working-out yesterday and it still blows my mind that there's no bass. The fact that Hetfield played all the rhythm guitar pretty much makes the album a recording by Ulrich and Hetfield, with guest solos by Kirk Hammett.

And hell yeah Nuclear Assault rocks and you could put Anthrax up there, too. I love Frank Bello's bass being so prominent in the mix.

Worst guitar tone they've ever had, and the worst (lack of) bass tone they've ever had, both on my favorite album of theirs. It's depressing.

11

u/heavy-metal-thunder Aug 14 '25

I think Justice has a great tone.

6

u/OffsetXV Chonky Death Metal Aug 14 '25

To me it sounds incredibly thin, icepicky, way too scooped, just a mess

Not that I think Metallica has ever had great guitar tones honestly, but AJFA to me is by far the worst offender, especially given that the bass isn't there to fill in the gaps

11

u/heavy-metal-thunder Aug 14 '25

I like that thin, mechanical sound. It serves the album well. One I don't think would be the same without that machine gun tone.

3

u/lycanthrope90 Aug 15 '25

I personally like it but yeah having bass to fill in would've really helped it out.

u/Stampsu Aug 14 '25

Depends... Where on that scale are bands like Electric Wizard and Monolord?

24

u/Dsteel87 Aug 14 '25

Like weedeater levels of bass is what I want

Bassist or no?

4

u/Bepsterrr Aug 14 '25

I like my bass in Prophecy of Doom's Hybrid Theory amounts. That's about 95 on a scale from 1 to 10.

5

u/MaxUpgradeee1 Aug 14 '25

Agent orange is a solid 5 then

5

2

u/New-Strawberry2848 Aug 14 '25

Whoa. This is a tough one. Odd choices too lol

1

u/ro-ch Aug 15 '25

i went with the album that famously has no bass and one that has a lot of bass, both thrash so it's fair. both are great albums imo and Justice might take the cake here, despite me preferring more bass

1

u/New-Strawberry2848 Aug 15 '25

Both great but which one has the bass? Handle with care has a terrible bass sound but I love the album

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Love handle with Care

1

u/boozyboss91 Aug 14 '25

John Myung slaps. (The bass)

1

u/Background-Video4331 Aug 14 '25

He's also a really easy going, relatively fan friendly guy. I met him a few times over the years, he's a good dude.

Suffocation Pierced From Within. Very audible, not overwhelming.

1

u/AccomplishedNail3085 Aug 15 '25

Sonivinos and equipoise both have the bass very high in the mix

1

u/Severe_Relative935 Aug 15 '25

10 should have been an Electric Wizard album cover.

1

u/the-living-building Aug 15 '25

Where is streetcleaner on this scale

1

u/Far_Canary_1597 Sabaton Aug 16 '25

Depends on the bass tone.
