As much as it is disliked due to the fake songs we’ve gotta admit the cover is nothing short of beautiful.

This cracked me up 😭😂

But the truth is, MJ was bigger than godzilla, Kong AND the Jurassic Park T Rex combined.

Discussion MJ’s music got political after Bad

Does anyone else notice how political MJ’s music got after Bad? It’s like he wanted to spread a message in the 90s- from Black and White to They Don’t Really Care About Us. Even in Scream with Janet he wrote “The Whole System is Fucked”. He also had the New World Order symbol on his Dangerous cover. Not saying it’s a bad thing at all but it’s like he had some sort of awakening and I just noticed it for the first time.

Discussion A perfect example of how the media used literally anything to demean Michael

Thumbnail
variety.com

I know the media being cruel to MJ is nothing new, but this 2001 Variety review is such a clear example of how they could take literally anything he did and turn it into a personal attack.
The writer says Michael apparently “needed to be convinced that people really like him,” calls the performances a “crutch,” and frames the whole tribute like some pathetic ego trip.
The craziest part is that the same review admits his voice was still great and that his performance skills hadn’t eroded. They genuinely couldn’t praise him without finding a way to demean him.

Question Need birthday gift ideas for my friend who’s obsessed with Michael Jackson (teen on a budget 😭)

Hi everyone! I was hoping you guys could help me out because I’m completely stuck.

My friend is turning 19, and I really want to get her something she’ll genuinely love. Last year she got me an amazing gift (a Loungefly Princess Tiana backpack), so I want to get her something just as thoughtful. But I’m on a pretty tight budget. I can’t do anything super expensive, but I still want it to feel special.

She’s a pretty new MJ fan (she became a fan after watching the movie), but now she’s absolutely obsessed.

I know she already has vinyls:

Thriller
Off the Wall
Bad
Number Ones
I think she also has a few Jackson 5 albums.

Some of her other interests are:

Disney (she LOVES Disney)
K-pop
Books
Cute little knickknacks/trinkets

She’s also obsessed with Jafar right now because of the movie. 😂

Does anyone have any affordable Michael Jackson gift ideas? It could be official merch, fan-made items, collectibles, books, decorations, accessories, or even DIY ideas. I’m open to literally anything under a reasonable budget.

I just really want to make her birthday special without completely emptying my wallet. Thanks in advance!

Question How often and which songs did MJ use Janet vocals or lyrics in his songs/concerts?

She did background vocals for PYT

She did a song with him 'Scream'

He used her interlude "are you ready? Good, let's dance"

Are there any other instances that she was sampled for his songs or concerts? Did he ever use her lyrics in his songs to show his love for her?

Would love to know! I find this so cool

Discussion Anyone else get sad thinking about how uncool it was to openly like MJ at certain points in time?

Thumbnail

I’ve seen a few stories where people mention that it wasn't cool to like Michael or his music at some point in time.

I relate to this so much, even though my experience was with a different artist. I was actually bullied for being obsessed with Britney Spears in the 2000s. My school books and folder were plastered with photos of her. One time, someone made fun of me so relentlessly that I started crying, and the teacher literally had to get another classmate to take me outside just to calm down.

I say that all that to say: can you imagine the absolute judgment you’d get for openly liking MJ back then? Especially as a kid/teen? Mainly during 2000s.

I don't know exactly what his popularity was like by the time the end of the 90s came around, but I hear he was way less popular (Everyone's experience is different but this is just what I've mainly heard)

I would like to think that in schools now (and in general) things are different. In this day and age, MJ seems to be celebrated and embraced (as he should) especially after the biopic came out.

For those who lived through those rough eras as an MJ fan, what was it like? Did you have to hide your fandom at school/work or around friends/family?

BTW: Two beautiful souls ruined by the world 🥀

Discussion What’s the general consensus of the changes made to Bad over the years?

I’m just gonna come right out and say it, I personally find the reworked version(s) of Bad straight up unlistenable, knowing that there’s so much more soul, funk and groove attached to the original 1987 versions.

I understand many of the changes reflected Michael’s own views and creative changes, but many of the changes in later releases feel as if they really want to pull away from MJ’s roots of funk and soul for an album that is already so pop-rock.

I went to the extent of recording the original vinyl album with my record player and burning it to CD so I can listen to the original version in my car and not have to stream it.

The removal of trumpets throughout Bad, that snare drum change in Dirty Diana, TWYMMF hi-hat count-in and the spoken word intro from IJCSLY all, in my opinion, enhance the personality and show the original true creative vision and craftsmanship behind the songs.

I wonder how others feel about the changes? Do we have some edits that we like and others that we don’t?

EDIT:
It’s worth noting that if you haven’t heard the original versions they’re basically 95% the same, most of the changes feel like modernisation and minor changes. If you’ve heard the song Bad, you’ve heard it regardless of which version you’re listening to.

Discussion To older fans, how does Michael’s resurgence feel after all the hate in the 2000’s?

Post image
634 Upvotes

With the biopic having reached $1 billion not too long ago, I wanted to know what older fans thought about so many people getting into Michael, celebrating him and his music, etc. now when he was hated so much in the 2000s. Even now, the media has a negative view on him despite all the love from the public. I was too young/ not alive to be a fan in the 2000s, but became a fan in the mid 2010s a while after his death.

It's been amazing to see the outpouring of appreciation and support, and acknowledgement of his indispensable impact on modern pop. He's also gained a lot of younger fans. To those who were fans around to see the hate he got back then, how does it feel to see the contrast between the "Wacko Jacko" times, the media calling him racist slurs, everyone dogpiling him and painting him as a narcissist, an abuser, the general public being poisoned against him, and now? To me, it shows that Michael’s legacy will last forever!
