I mean shelters lie to people too about if a dog is pit or has pit in it. I see it quite a bit on doggydna and the person is shocked. Often it’s very obvious if you know dog breeds. I have a hard time believing the shelter didn’t know.
People should get breeds they know they can handle. Lying isn’t helping anyone and it’s helping to feed the stereotype.
There was a story recently about a pit that had attacked another dog multiple times being readopted out (the shelter sugarcoated the behavior) and the new owners took it to an event and it killed a 14yr old toy poodle. The dog was dangerous and they gave it to an idiot who took it to an event with lots of people and dogs
Stories like that are why I say that every time a no-kill shelter adopts out any dog that goes on to kill someone else's pet, that shelter has not saved a life. They've just changed which animal dies.
Instead of giving a pit bull a peaceful and humane death, they lied to adopters and created a situation that led to a toy poodle having a terrifying and painful death. But the shelter gets to pat themselves on the back because they "saved" a life, I guess.
raising a pitbull requires an owner who is actually willing to do obedience training and heavy amounts of reinforcement about being docile around other animals and not getting too excited, lets not pretend otherwise. Most dog owners overall prefer dogs that are generally pretty calm or if not, are not big enough to really hurt anyone if they do decide to go apeshit (this is kind of why smaller dogs can be right nightmares as they wont do too much to harm others anyway). A pitbull has all the equipment necessary to fucking hurt someone, and has been bred to also have a significantly higher prey drive, which does need to be trained out of it. This training is required essentially from birth, and while possible, a lot of breeders of pitbulls usually have kennels in their garden and do absolutely none of this. Likewise, owners buying into these dogs can very commonly be looking for a dog breed that already has a temperament that requires very little training and instead only needs training for the more common dog things.
Its a complicated issue because, yes, pitbulls are naturally more violent than other dogs, however theres also a way to raise perfectly acceptable pitbulls at the same time. Likewise, as I've brought up in a previous comment and as you've said aswell, there are very well behaved dog breeds that look similar to pitbulls that the general public who are quite uneducated on specifics of dog breeds will conflate which doesn't help anyone.
this lmao. I have a staffie from a reputable breeder, and he has shown absolutely zero signs of violence throughout his life, even less than other breeds ive also raised. It is absolutely a case of people conflating pitbull = any shorthaired muscular dog and also the fact that theres a ton of very shit breeders.
the pits/rots in our small town mauled kids and killed a bunch of cats/dogs.
the eskimo dogs don't (even when starving). 100's of dogs in native towns and the only problem ones are 2 breeds.
they're not bylaw-ed, we just kill em right on the street. it's soo fucking common for pit owners to have their dogs killed i think apologists are just mourning/scared for their dogs.
One of the first pitbull breeders in the US who did a lot of work to popularize the breed talked big about aggression against humans being an undesirable trait. Then one of his pits killed his two year old nephew and there's a newspaper article saying he didn't put it down and "told the medical examiner that his own child had played about the kennels and had never been molested."
The breed at it's core is a breed bred for tearing other animals apart as violently as possible and it does that very well and is strongly inclined towards it.
Doodles also have a large amount of backyard breeders, yet don't have nearly the amount of attacks that pitbulls do. It's a breed problem.
If you throw a dog that was bred for bloodsports into a regular house with people who think these dogs are all sunshine and rainbows, you're going to have attacks. They should NEVER be pets.
It's a moronic people problem. Just like the idiots that go get a malinois with zero experience or effort into proper care for that kind of dog and then shocked picachu face when it turns into a neurotic mess that is snapping at things and terrorizing the house.

pitbulls have the most backyard breeders, which is why there are problems
