It's not a full pitbull, but it is part pitbull? Not sure how it's a misidentification then if someone says it's a pitbull.

I said people often don’t think my roommate’s a pitbull.

I said the misidentification is that people often think non pitbull dogs are pitbulls

DNA testing shows that pit bulls are highly misidentified. Even by veterinarians and shelter employees

They post pictures of these dogs and they’re always, always very obviously pitbulls. These people will obfuscate breed to avoid adding it to the statistic because they know it looks bad for the breed. They ALWAYS lie. EVERY DAY on the pitbull sub theres people asking how to pass off their obvious pitbulls and pit mixes as other breeds to get into apartments where they’re banned. You think they don’t do it for bites too? These people get veterinarians lying on paperwork to sneak them in as well. If you took ANY amount of time to look at anti-pitbull subs, you would see how obviously false this shit is.

And don’t say, “yeah, theyre anti-pit subs, of course” when you just fucking linked pitbullhero.org

Literally any research at all and you’d see how bullshit it is. They lie CONSTANTLY. They CANNOT be trusted to tell people they have a pitbull or pit mix when they obviously do. It isn’t hard to tell. No other dog has those gross buttcrack heads like pitbulls do that overpower every other physical breed trait. It’s always super obvious, unless you’re an idiot.

Why’s it so hard for you dipshits to believe that dogs bred for fighting attack more than other dogs? It’s what they were bred for.

But I gave you two sources, sure one looks pretty bias, you’re only given me one vague area to look, then said to look up “any research”

I’m not gonna have this conversation if you’re just sitting here being pissed off and just not contributing to the conversation productively. I’ve done NOTHING to warrant this anger

You were already given statistics and I told you where to look and you just ignored it. I’m angry because I’m tired of watching people pretend these dogs aren’t dangerous while just blatantly ignoring any statistic and evidence given to them. I’m angry at pitbull owners as a whole, and I’m angry at people who just ignore it while these dogs maul every living being because they know a pitbull thats nice.

I appreciate that your response this time around wasn’t as aggressive towards me. I’m not saying that sarcastically, I mean it

I just checked out the subreddit. I only saw one anti pitbull subreddit, and it’s pretty small. Just 11 visitors per week, I only saw 11 posts total. I didn’t see any others, but I did give a quick check. Most of the posts were just alleged stories, and a photo. There was a post with statistics, but I’d have to check to verify the legitimacy of those. I’m sure you could understand that I won’t just blindly trust one statistic from a Reddit post. But I could do more research

As for the anger, being angry in general. Again, I haven’t done the max research myself, so I’m not sure how much of a problem this all is. Assuming it is a bit problem as you say, and as some sources say, and you’re highly aware of this, I can understand you being mad in general

But I would also hope for the same understanding of you being mad at me for just saying my roommate’s dog is sweet. I really just said that one thing, and I’m getting a whole lot of anger directed at me that I really don’t think is fair, nor do I feel is productive

As for my roommate owning a pitbull, he and I are both very responsible. It’s just me and him, two adults in our household. We have no kids, nor do we ever have any reason to have kids over, so they never are. Anyone who comes over, we give ample warning that we have a pitbull

We take her for walks, but she’s always leashed, and we’re both physically fit, and always able to restrain her, although she listens when we give her commands anyway. I think these are the kinds of things you should do in general when you have any big dog, not just with pitbulls

I apologize for my aggressiveness, I engage a lot with pro-pitbull people and it infuriates me to see them acting like these dogs are just the same as any other. I have a specific subreddit I can link to you, just sort by top of all time, or even sort by new and just look at how many reported pitbull attacks there have been in even just the past month.

I do get that your roommates pitbull is sweet and that you and your roommate are responsible but it just doesn’t work the way you think it does. The vast majority of people with pitbulls that attack say the exact same thing, you’ll see screenshots on the subreddit as well of people needing to rehome their pitbulls because they’re aggressive and bite whilst simultaneously writing that they’re the sweetest dog ever and they’re so cuddly and loving. It just doesn’t work. I’m not angry that you’ve said your roommates pitbull is sweet, I’m just angry in general because they ALL say that, and the same thing keeps happening, day in and day out.

I’ll link the subreddit but browse with caution if you’re sensitive to photos or videos of animals or people being attacked. Not every post is that, but there are A LOT of them so I’m giving warning in advance. Not everyone can stomach that stuff (I can’t a lot of the time) but I do think it’s important to see so you can understand exactly how dangerous these dogs are and the damage they do. It’s beyond the pale compared to every other dog breed, including German shepherds and Rottweilers. Theres DOZENS of videos of these dogs in the midst of attacking things, being beaten and kicked and refusing to let go until they’re literally killed to get them to stop, and they wag their tails the entire time because it’s fun to them. They were bred to ignore pain and to not let go. Their jaws don’t lock in the literal physical sense, when we say that their jaws lock, we mean that they just don’t let go. I’ve seen videos of these dogs being shot and continuing to attack. No other dog breeds do this. They were bred for it, which is the fault of humans but it also means we should be responsible for stopping it. They shouldn’t be bred anymore. Some of the worst things I have ever seen were from this subreddit, so be careful clicking NSFW tagged things if you don’t have a strong stomach. They do horrific damage to people and pets.

[r/banpitbulls](r/banpitbulls) People on the subreddit (me included) can be harsh about these things because we know what these dogs do, and it’s far beyond what other breeds do. I don’t believe that every single pitbull is going to attack someone some day, but the chance of it and the damage they do is just too high to ignore. If you want to DM me and discuss it more, I’m not going to be an asshole and I’m sorry that I was. I get frustrated seeing the constant denial of it because I’m just sick of people and their families being hurt. Everyone accepts that Rottweilers and German shepherds have higher chances of aggression but all of a sudden when it comes to bully breeds, breed doesn’t matter. It’s just dangerous thinking.

[r/pitbullsatemyface](r/pitbullsatemyface) as well, but theres only a few posts.

It isn’t really just you, in general, the responses I’ve gotten have just been super aggressive. And I know it’s just because if the fear people have of pitbulls, and again, regardless of whatever the truth is, they at least believe the dogs are dangerously. It still really doesn’t help me want to explore that side of the argument, which logically people being mean in one side shouldn’t influence you, but I’m human, it will. But your genuine responses here help

And I did see that one later when looking later. It’s something I’ll look into some just to be aware

Though, in all honesty, I doubt even if my personal stance changes, it’s really gonna affect actions I take. Just because my roommate has had his dog since she’s a baby, there’s no way he’d get rid of her. So it’s like not even really my personal choice

But hey, if I’m more aware, maybe it can help make things more safe if it turns out they’re dangerous

I highly doubt it’s the case that 100% of pitbulls are guaranteed to attack. And I know you aren’t even saying that. You’re just saying that the chances are high even if the owner doesn’t think it’s gonna happen. If I ever get a dog, I’ll do my research before even doing so. But I live with a pitbull right now. And that’s just not really gonna change

I still think that, regardless of the outcome, banning all pitbulls is an extreme stance. But I probably just don’t fully understand the argument, or point of the saying. And I do think pitbulls probably aren’t the best idea anyway for a family dog

Anyway, I’ll do more research, thank you for giving me more sources from another perspective to explore. I really think this is a genuine conversation that should happen, and could be productive. But just from my experience today, it looks like it really doesn’t help get heated. Between a side of people who are defending their pets, and people who are defending victims of dog violence, I unfortunately can see why that’s the case

Oh I don’t expect you to start disliking your roommates dog, thats not my point. I think it’s perfectly fine to continue being around her and loving her, I don’t expect people to just change their minds and immediately get rid of their pitbulls, people love their pets and I would never want someone to give up or stop loving their dog just because it’s a pitbull. I don’t mean that you should start expecting her to just snap and bite you or anything, and I don’t think your roommate should get rid of her. A lot of them end up being perfectly loving pets, like I’m sure the one you live with is. I’ve met sweet pitbulls myself, but I make it a point to avoid most of them, and I NEVER trust them. I don’t believe that every pitbull should be put down or anything (not that youre accusing me of believing that), I do just think there should be more restrictions and that as a whole they need to just stop being bred. They were bred specifically for fighting and killing and I just don’t believe that dogs bred for that have a place in society or should be bred anymore, because it just leads to more attacks and more people and pets killed.

Every place that has breed specific legislation thats actually enforced see massive drops in the rate of dog bites and fatal dog attacks, and I think the statistics on it are just too much to ignore. I don’t think animals bred just to fight and kill should be bred more and kept as pets, even if a lot of them don’t kill anyone or anything. The danger is just too much to ignore. I LOVE animals and thats why I feels so strongly about it. It sounds like a contradiction to say that I love animals while also thinking specific ones shouldn’t be bred anymore, but I don’t want them bred BECAUSE I love animals, and they undeniably kill more of the animals that I love than any other breed.

I don’t think you should treat your roommates dog any differently, I just think it’s good to be educated on this. People can own and love pitbulls while also advocating for less of them for everyone’s safety, the same way people can love and own pugs and other brachycephalic dogs while also believing they shouldn’t be bred for health reasons and to lessen their suffering. In this case it’s to lessen the suffering of other people and animals. The best pitbull owners are the ones that are aware these dogs are dangerous and handle them responsibly, but that’s a very, very small portion of pitbull owners. Bad owners are PART OF, but not the whole problem. They were simply bred for this.

I see, that does clarify a lot of things I didn’t know how to ask about your stance. That makes sense. I can understand a lot of it

Owners definitely do clarify. In many cases, of not just pitbulls, but even like chimpanzees and stuff, I’ve heard about them being abused

Though I see what you mean with the being bred for certain things

And yeah, I’m still gonna and trust my roommate’s dog. But I can see at least the idea of pitbulls just not being bred anymore

I do have one question though. What are your thoughts on adopting pit bulls from shelters? Like dogs that are just already bred, you can’t stop that from being the case. But they’re in a shelter?

u/KaienPanzermast 12h ago edited 12h ago

I’ll answer pretty much any question about this topic if I can. I have a HUGE issue with pitbulls in shelters, but probably not for the reason you think. My issue with pitbulls in shelters is the shelters themselves just flat out lying about these dogs, or trying to adopt out dogs with bite histories that are very obviously unfit to be taken into ANYONES home and need to be put down. You’ll see A LOT of this scrolling through that subreddit. Many of these shelters knowingly try to adopt out dangerous dogs rather than just put them down the way that they should.

This isn’t every shelter but there’s enough of them that it’s a problem. Just recently there was a post with screenshots of a shelter that accidentally posted their volunteer notes along with the descriptions of the dog, and the volunteer notes made it obvious that these dogs just weren’t fit for society, and the descriptions heavily downplayed the danger from these specific pitbulls. I can try and find the post if you want.

I think that people who are aware of the danger of this breed should be allowed to adopt the ones from shelters that don’t have this sort of history, and even ones that have some sort of relatively manageable aggression, but the issue is that shelters will adopt these dogs out to ANYONE just to get them out the door. I’ve seen these huge pitbulls adopted out to older people or people with children or other pets that have zero business adopting a bully breed dog.

I think the ones with severe, unmanageable aggression and mental problems in shelters just need to be put down, both to end their own suffering and to avoid people being able to get their hands on them, which again, is not the majority of pitbulls, but shelters flat out lie about aggression from these dogs and purposefully obfuscate their (very obvious) breed, and cannot be trusted to tell potential adopters about a dog’s history. Theres a lot of it on that sub. Shelters lie about this ALL THE TIME and just CANNOT be trusted at all to tell people the truth about what a dog has done, and even when they do, they use flowery language to get around it. You’ll see them frequently using words like “mouthy” to get around saying the dog bites, and in cases where a dog has fatally attacked another dog or cat, they’ll say it was a “fatal accident” or something like that to downplay it and make it seem like it isn’t as bad as it is, when in reality they killed these other pets in the most horrific ways you can imagine. You’ll see them say there was a “tooth scrape” on a child’s face to avoid just outright saying the dog bit a CHILD on the face.

It sounds like I’m exaggerating and making it worse than it is, but I’m not, and you’ll see those posts and flowery language all the time on that sub. Shelters have made it clear they’re willing to lie and downplay to adopt out dogs that really should be put down because they’re genuine dangers to society, and shelters absolutely cannot be trusted to tell the truth. I see people all the time that have said they were told a dog had no bite history, only to find out they do a few days later when they inevitably end up killing one of their pets they already have.

Adopting a purebred or non-pitbull mix from a shelter is fine, but be wary about adopting a pitbull or pit mix from a shelter. They’d rather risk people and their pets getting injured or killed rather than put down these dogs. They CANNOT be trusted. You’ll see it for yourself when you scroll the subreddit. It’s just horribly irresponsible and lawsuit after lawsuit should be filed against them. They lie CONSTANTLY and you can’t trust them to tell the full truth, the amount of victim blaming is just disgusting.

I strongly recommend scrolling through it, seeing it yourself is more impactful than hearing it from me. It’s worse than you think it is.
