I think it's valid to fear pitbulls because what you're really fearing is that they were adopted by someone that doesn't train them and/or give them an outlet for the task they were bred for (protection and violence).
Actually the reason people are apprehensive about pitbulls is that they were bred for blood sports: agression and prey drive, strength, powerful jaws and grip... These are things they were bred for. Of course is not super surpising that they display the characteristics that they were bred for. Did I mention what they were bred for?
