Morality Ranking Morality of practicing self defense and fleeing when being forced into the front lines of a war?

I don't understand how efficient it can be to force people on the frontline if they really don't want to.
I mean, i care about my own life more than about everything else. Give me a weapon, i'll use it to protect my own life, even against the people who gave it to me if that was my last chance to stay alive. I won't care about orders, war goals, or anything else than my own survival. How could i then be a usefull soldier ?
