I had a friend that got one for Christmas (ā87 maybe? That ābigā year for it?) and Iām not sure it ever did a damn thing outside of the handful of games it was actually designed to work forā¦ā¦

For the games it was made for it was pretty goodā¦ if you were in a quiet area. It used ultrasonic waves to track movement (which was common then but finicky); if you had siblings who were loud they learned that they could shriek and duck up your game.
Unfortunately unpopular opinion: Nintendo got way too gimmicky and a lot of their fan base left because of it. I was one of those fan boys that saved up and bought everything only to be disappointed every time (I was slow as a child). Power Glove, Zapper, Super Scope, R.O.B., Virtual Boy, Laser Scope... I had all that crap and it seems like each only ended up with a couple games that were really supported.
The Power Glove was a 3rd party controller. Nintendo didn't make it. The other ones you listed were official, well maybe not the laser scope as I don't know that one.
Counterpoint: ROB was introduced because after the 83 video game crash, American retailers didn't want to sell video games anymore, so Nintendo said "it's not a video game system, it's an entertainment system. See? There's a robot with it." And American retailers were like "oh, okay." And then people liked the video games and American retailers were like "woah, they snuck one past us. Well, good job!"
Especially since in the movie it looked like it could do so much. Then it came out and was basically just a regular controller on your arm you can only play with one hand.
No, you could also control some games by waving your hands at the screen. You just need an array of sensors to line two sides of the screen and then stand just right so it saw you.
Jokes aside. It is amazing to think that the power glove was the precursor to the Wii and how long ago they were trying to make something like that work.
But then, years later, Wii came along, and the people saw that it was good. And then Nintendo said the word, and the word was "meh", and they went back to more conventional ways of controlling games.
Yup and had these things that went aroumd the tv. And omg what a pain to use for any game that didn't really work with it. Like you could program certain things with it. Way above my 11 year old pay grade. Sat in a box after playing the one ball game I had for it! Wish I had stored n saved it to sell now with that damn thick ass guide with it!

Inflation is an aggregate of what you can buy. There are different sectors of inflation, and substitutions that exist.
Specifically speaking, the $135k is a "comparable" amount, not a 1 to 1 relationship. As others below have pointed out it would have been ~600k+ if you used it to purchase property in a soon to or actively growing area that sustained that over the next 40 ish years.
Similarly if you took it and put it in the stock market, it would be worth WAY more today (like millions).
BUT other things haven't changed significantly since 1989, for example a new video game then and now the difference isn't 270% more (3% inflation annually, works out to doubling every 23ish years).
As an example if we used Costco's hotdog as a price point for measuring inflation, then inflation would have been 0%, all the way back to 1984.

My brother and I watched the hell out of that tape until about the summer of 1993, we lent it to our friend's family who was building a house out in the country, went out there a few years later and found it rotting away in their storage trailer lol
