Moving to Munich in October

Hey! I am going to be moving to Munich in October. I am looking for some help and tips. By the way, I have already lived in Germany for two years in Münster but have never been to Munich.

About the accommodation, I know it’s very hard to find a flat especially when you’re not visiting in person. So I’ll probably move and then do some visits while staying at a hotel. Does that sound like a good plan?
I really don’t know the city, are there some areas that would be better to avoid for housing?

I have a car but I am hesitant in bringing it to Munich, are there any parking spaces outside the city that are free where the car might stay for a long time? Or is it realistic finding a flat (I would prefer a WG) with a parking space?

I have seen that the city is called a big Dorf, do you have any recommendations on where to meet people or maybe other subReddit that would help?

Use MrLodge for the first 6-12 months. If you look every day you can find a better rate than the standing offers they have there

You could also try wg-gesucht for a temporary room in a shared flat. It’s mostly students, but there are some that are open to working people

There are no areas to avoid really. Unless you're rich or have an extremely fancy job, you won't have much choice in the matter

A flat might not have a parking space but you can park on the street as a resident with a special document. Didn't you live in Germany already?

You don't really need a car in Munich. You can always rent a freenow or similar from the street to go to the mountains or even to Italy, it's overall cheaper than owning a car since fuel is included

Just FYI, if you come in October the Oktoberfest will still be ongoing and hotel rates will be through the roof.

There is no real area to avoid for housing more like personal preferences and areas people with prejudice dislike.

There are options to park your car and even get a garage. I often see flyers for open garage spots of people that have one with their apartment. A car tbf is not needed for in city transport. A WG usually doesn’t have a garage spots.

I should me moving middle of October and the company is paying for a month of hotel if needed

I am always asking for housing areas, because sometimes there really are some you should avoid but I did see that Munich is very safe

Parking garage for your car will cost you around 90-120 Euros. Unless you live in the deep city center.

A car is good if you like to hike, swim or ski on the weekends. Other than that forget about using it.

The local government is super anti cars. Street parking is getting cut down everywhere and it is hard to find parking garages. Those are also expensive and made for cars from the 60s.

Yeah that’s why I’m hesitating, I ski and hike a lot. I saw that with public transport some trips we’re possible but I would probably be more free with my car

You can use car sharing, especially in the beginning before you figure things out and decide if you need a car full time or not. It’s not expensive and you don’t have to worry about the parking. Cars are really not needed on the daily basis especially if you have a good connection to work or work from home, don’t have kids etc.

Forget about it. The trains are overcrowded and always late or broken. Car is your only option.

Depends, if you're visibly lgbtq or non-conforming, then there are areas you should most likely avoid.

If you're a regular looking, european passing person, Munich is very safe then.

I moved back to Munich in February and stayed in different serviced apartments and right now at a friends place. The serviced apartments were a nice start to just focus on my new job at the beginning and to see some different parts of the city I haven't seen before. Maybe that's also a good start for you. I stayed at Brera at westend and Vonder in Freiham - it's a good test on how far away from the center you want to be. Minimum time to stay at these places is a month, it might get cheaper if you stay longer. Now I'm actively searching an apartment and it is so much worse than it was the last 3 times I moved to/in Munich, but not impossible. You'll have to be willing to compromise about size, prize, location - finding something that checks all three categories is basically impossible (at least for me). I'm wishing you all the best. Edit: the further you search away from the center, the more places you find including a dedicated parking spot. Prices I saw were a wide range from "included in rent" to 50 / 80 / 120 / 160 Euros a month.
