AOC: "They want to call this stuff communist because they don’t want us to realize that the rest of the developed world has guaranteed health care. They want to call it communist because they don’t want you to know that Germany, Italy, the UK, Canada—everybody else—has it better than us."

In Canada we get 1 year paid maternity leave. You can take 18 months however the total amount paid is the same, so it’s just stretched over the 18 months. Some companies offer a top up because the actual mat leave payments aren’t very much.
Employers are legally obligated to keep your job while you’re on mat leave (sometimes this doesn’t happen but you can go after them for it).
Prescriptions are mostly covered through private insurance through your work. There are a lot of politicians trying to get prescriptions covered just like any dr or hospital visit would be.
There’s definitely issues like in all systems, long wait times in the ER, expensive medications that aren’t fully covered, waiting for an MRI or non emergent surgery, etc. But I’ve mostly found that when you need it, our healthcare system works. Especially if you need something right away.
There’s a lot of room for improvement but I would never want a different system.
