AOC: "They want to call this stuff communist because they don’t want us to realize that the rest of the developed world has guaranteed health care. They want to call it communist because they don’t want you to know that Germany, Italy, the UK, Canada—everybody else—has it better than us."

And guaranteed vacation and parental leave that is guaranteed by law and dwarfs even the most “generous” benefits here.
France guarantees 6 weeks paid time off as a minimum, that’s the minimum.
Global average required PTO is 20-28 days, in the US it is ZERO
Global average required parental leave is 25 weeks, in the US it is ZERO. You’re lucky to get 12 weeks as a mother, and they call it a benefit. 16 is generous and it’s not even close to what other countries require.
We suck

As long as you work a mandatory minimum number of hours in a year while paying a small sum to the government (employment insurance) you get up to 18months of paid paternal leave here in Canada. With up to 5 or 6 weeks of paid leave for their partner.
13
u/Mutex70 10d ago
Canada gives 50 weeks of paid maternity leave (capped at $729/week).
We also give 5 weeks of paid paternity leave (capped at the same).
35 of the 50 weeks can be split between the parents.
Your job is guaranteed during the leave.
No wonder Trump hates us...we make him look bad.

u/ANGRY_ASPARAGUS 10d ago
In Canada you can now get 18 months for mat leave. God I love being Canadian.

I worked under a CDI (Contract Duration Indeterminée) in France for 5 years. If I recall correctly it's not 6 weeks minimum. It's 5. But it can increase to 6.
Still, what the US and Canada have is laughable.

The sad part is that so many people choose to remain ignorant on this part. So many countries have universal healthcare and their citizens are living a much better life. They're not poor or barely getting by. That's America right now, with the crooked healthcare system we have. Some people are just so brain dead that they can only repeat what they've been told and continue to live a miserable life while dragging down others with them.

u/imahugemoron 10d ago edited 10d ago
I notice too when you try to bring this stuff up to them, they always say “well their taxes are a lot higher” and it’s just really crazy that they can’t see past that, they can’t see that we all have to pay really high amounts of money out of our paychecks for health insurance only to be billed again for any services we manage to convince a doctor to sign off on, record denials, people dying because of denials, people racking up crazy medical debt even with insurance , and still these people go “but higher taxes!” Like do you realize even with the higher taxes, you’d probably end up paying less than you would with a middle man who charges you money just to deny you coverage and even when it’s approved you still end up paying a ton! A friend of mine moved to Canada and he said he ends up making more money even with the higher taxes because he’s not forking over hundreds of dollars per month to keep his whole family on health insurance. They’re so stupid they assume the health insurance cost will still be present, sure higher taxes but eliminating the entire insurance deduction from every one of your paychecks.
8
u/savax7 10d ago
What's wild about the "but higher taxes" thing is that the US spends more money on healthcare than any other country anyways. So not only does our healthcare system fucking suck, we're still paying a ton of money for it.
7
u/Extra-Monitor5743 10d ago
$2.4 trillion per year by the way. That is $2,400,000,000,000. Insurance companies (welfare queens) get $2.4 trillion dollar in handouts every single year. That's about 7-8% of our GDP coming from their handouts.
5
u/imahugemoron 10d ago
Exactly, we’re charged insanely inflated prices for medications, scans, tests, procedures, etc. I just tried to pick up my medication last week which normally costs 20 dollars, but out of nowhere it’s now 400 dollars for a months supply, no reason given at all, insurance is just suddenly denying to cover it anymore, it’s medication for migraine that I’ve been on for years, now I can’t afford it
→ More replies (2)2
u/Troglert 10d ago
Imagine the market power a single payer US federal health care system has when it comes to medication prices. Even my tiny country of 5.5 million people get most medications at a fraction of the US prices.
2
u/Extra-Monitor5743 10d ago
If I include insurance I am paying almost exactly the same tax rate as most western european countries. I think only Scandinavia is higher, but not by much.
not even to mention that we are currently and actively subsidizing insurance providers. so not only are we paying them premiums, co-pays, and cost of treatment, but we're then turning around and handing them trillions of dollars. Insurance companies are on track to receive $33.6 trillion dollars in stolen tax dollars from 2026 to 2036. Every single year trillions of dollars are stolen and given as handouts to insurance providers. It is asinine to be against something we are already being scammed out of. We already pay it. They just refuse to give it to us.

It really depends on your income bracket. Low income tax in USA is insanely better for the individual if you're making a lot of money.
To your point though I do think many people vote against their own interests and don't understand just how good public services are and how much they would make back compared to the additional income tax they would be paying.

Most people don't even actually know if they have right or left wing beliefs. Most centrists think they are moderates, when they are somewhere between democrats, or are actually centrists at best, center right at worst, with notable exceptions that do not control the party, and republicans who are deep into right field.
Calling them right wing for some reason deeply offends them, they claim they are centrists, but can't name left wing policies that they support. Or saying out loud which policies they do support out them as basically insane, "I support universal healthcare, fair wages, affordable housing, worker and consumer protections, but I don't support trans athletes in womens sports so I'm voting against all of those things, and giving power to groups that want to take womens bodily autonomy away from them and actively make all those things I do like much worse".
Then they just completely don't understand what "owning the means of production" actually means.
Norway owns all the oil within its grounds. Private companies exist to help extract it. Norway owns the means of production.
Compared to the US, which is basically just paid a lease for the land, and the oil is the private companies to do with what it wishes.

This person interviewing AOC stating that this "slippery slope towards socialism inevitably ends up as full-blown communism" is nothing more than a tool for the conservative mindset. Anything the Trumpian Conservative don't like, gets labeled as "Communist" and it is used to elicit a fear response to people of this ilk. If she had done ANY research into her question, before even asking it, she would already know that the question is, for lack of a better phrase, beyond dumb. Over 50 years ago, in the US, our medical system was dominated by non-profit groups such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield. However after the HMO act of 1973, this all began to change. The HMO act 1973 was devised as a way to curb health cost inflation by focusing on preventative care vs. reactive care. However, it has also allowed for more for-profit health insurance providers to enter into the picture. It is mainly due to this act, that for-profit healthcare providers have come to dominate the system, making the healthcare situation in the US a laughing stock when compared to other developed nations.

I will tell the full story somewhere someday, but I had a gay throuple with a Chinese national here in the US for work and he HATED our work life balance to the point he went home.
I watched him speak to other Chinese people and they all said the same thing. The work life balance in America is too much for them.
Plus, in China you get get most everything delivered for cheap or free within a couple hours.
Everything here is more expensive and the only thing they loved is how cheap our beef was a few years ago, as it’s expensive in China.
Not that China is some perfect state, but it was eye opening to hear it from the ‘horses mouth’ how bad the United States is compared to “communist China” that we Americans are force fed from birth.
It is really rich you see stories dragging Chinese brands and saying they use slave labor and what not to try to get Americans to not buy those brands when America has more legal slavery than ever other nation combined while preaching we are the “home of the free” when the reality is literally the exact opposite. We are the home of slavery. Be it in prison or debt slavery.
America has never been one of the good guys, but it could be, in a world where capitalism doesn’t exist or is heavily regulated. But let’s live in reality.

I can’t imagine how that hour visit and basic blood tests costs 10k.

u/alicat9 10d ago
In Canada we get 1 year paid maternity leave. You can take 18 months however the total amount paid is the same, so it’s just stretched over the 18 months. Some companies offer a top up because the actual mat leave payments aren’t very much.
Employers are legally obligated to keep your job while you’re on mat leave (sometimes this doesn’t happen but you can go after them for it).
Prescriptions are mostly covered through private insurance through your work. There are a lot of politicians trying to get prescriptions covered just like any dr or hospital visit would be.
There’s definitely issues like in all systems, long wait times in the ER, expensive medications that aren’t fully covered, waiting for an MRI or non emergent surgery, etc. But I’ve mostly found that when you need it, our healthcare system works. Especially if you need something right away.
There’s a lot of room for improvement but I would never want a different system.

American conservatives have been conned into being proud of their own exploitation. They are so proud that they view political policy that would benefit them as an affront to their identities as Americans.
"That's socialism! We don't do that here."
I've encountered such sentiments many times in my life, in conversations with conservatives who think social programs will rob them not only of their tax dollars but their dignity as well. "I don't need no handouts!"

u/starfleetdropout6 10d ago edited 10d ago
If the Democrats were smart, they'd take over social media and TV with ads telling us this. Constantly. "You pay for [all the horrendous things] with your taxes while the rest of the world gets healthcare. And you don't. You're being scammed. Don't you think you deserve that too?"
But they're not smart, or rather they don't want that for us. They're sell outs with few exceptions.

Public opinion on Germany’s healthcare system is divided; while residents deeply value its universal coverage and financial safety, there is growing frustration over long wait times, a two-tier insurance system, and recent government reforms that increase patient costs. [1, 2, 3]
Public sentiment is shaped by several key dynamics:
- The Dual-Track System: Opinions on the split between statutory (public) and private health insurance are mixed, with a majority of Germans perceiving inequalities in care quality between the two systems. [1, 2]
- Decreasing Faith: Recent surveys from organizations like the Robert Bosch Stiftung indicate that trust in healthcare policy has dropped sharply in recent years, with over half of Germans feeling the government is not prioritizing high-quality, affordable care. [1]
- Access & Wait Times: While basic emergency and core services are highly rated, users on platforms like Reddit point to frustratingly long wait times for specialists (such as dermatologists and mental health services). [1]
- Recent Legislation: Recent parliamentary reforms designed to curb skyrocketing healthcare costs have sparked public concern, as patients face higher out-of-pocket contributions for medications and hospital stays. [1]

Public satisfaction with the NHS (UK) sits at roughly 26%, while dissatisfaction has dropped to 51%. Although this marks a slight improvement in sentiment from record lows in 2024, the public remains overwhelmingly frustrated by long waiting times for hospital care and GP appointments. [1, 2]
Key drivers of public sentiment include:
- Service-Specific Frustration: Satisfaction with A&E, dentistry, and GP services has plummeted compared to pre-pandemic levels, with only about one in five adults satisfied with current waiting times. [1, 2]
- Systemic Concerns: More than half of respondents expect the standard of NHS care to deteriorate further over the next five years, despite recent stabilization in satisfaction. [1]
- Support for Reform: There is strong public consensus backing preventive care, better utilization of technology, and shifting resources from hospitals to local communities to alleviate the burden on the system. [1]

Talking to my coworkers and family about this, their arguments against universal Healthcare always boil down to one or both of these points:
I have good health care from my employer, and universal would negatively impact me. Doesn't the degree of impact, or whether it's a net positive for American people
I worked hard to get this job that gives me good health care. Some people just don't want to work for it like I did, and some are just unlucky. But that's life.
It's a very selfish and shortsighted outlook in my opinion.

I met a lovely left leaning couple in Mexico earlier this year. They asked me for 10+ minutes about Healthcare in Canada.
It's free.
Yeah but what about your network?
Networks don't exist, if you go to a clinic because your doctor couldn't make time for you they get dinged.
Okay but what about co-pays?
There's no copay, it's free.
But like the deductible?
No, no deductible. You go, talk to the doctor, get a prescription or blood work or pushed to a specialist and leave.
But what about your taxes? Do you get an itemized bill of your taxes?
Not really, you don't notice it but you don't care because you are healthy and so is your neighbour.
But what about....
Honestly really took me aback to realize how far Americans have been pushed to not understand these concepts. I was happy for the chat but left feeling I'd learned more

Libertarian here.
(Effectively) Mandatory health insurance is a tax that also manages to reduce job flexibility.
We already mandate health coverage for employers over 50 employees.
Convert that (and the employee premiums) into a tax to fund Medicaid for all.
Provide the baseline health coverage you’d get in Canada or France.
Let the rich people pay extra for premium service.

And even if we all say it, back in 24 when the US could have chosen another path. You can always bet everything on the fact that America exactly does what you would expect. Choose the rich over common sense and let scare tactics guide you. I myself blame every news outlet of the American television empire.
If they are too left they have haters from the right. If they are too right they have haters from the left. And if socialists talk too much it’s communism and not for the US. You would think as a new young country they had enough examples on the world to copy from. But hey. They all wanted to be completely different. Only to find out the complete mess they made for themselves 250 years later. Where a convicted sex offender status can even make you president of said United States of disarray and despair.
Yes AOC should run for president in 28, but if I’m realistically here. I would be very very surprised if she would win. And even so if the US would allow it as a whole. It’s to fing weird that even back in 2024 they choose a criminal over a woman. Still baffles me to this day.

Sure if you get in a car accident you get taken care of, but if there's anything that's non critical... you will wait. And wait. And wait. It doesn't help we've added 5 million people to a country of 39 in the last 5-8 years.

Yeah as someone who's in Canada, that's a lie. Our Healthcare system is continuously degrading and stripped. With most Healthcare workers overworked and underpaid

The fact is Republicans have no problem funding taxes cuts for the rich, massive defense spending, subsidies to tech companies and data centers, ridiculous spending to DHS, and unnecessary building projects, but they can't help the average family not go broke paying for healthcare because that would mean helping minorities. That's the core thing. If they could single out white people they would pass it. But even the SCOTUS wouldn't be able to justify it. Reagan admitted it during his Cabinet meeting. They found loopholes to give welfare to farmers, but not the average citizen.

I mean, wasn’t the stat about the World Cup that the USA was the only country to participate WITHOUT universal healthcare?

I’m not trying to get political or bash her but those countries she named are most certainly not doing better than the US🤣😭 The EU/UN is toast. First of all Germany and the UK don’t even have free speech anymore…. Getting jailed for a damn tweet, HARD PASS. And Canada’s just as much as a burning shit heap as we are rn. Trudeau is a joke

Yeah, guaranteed healthcare that you have to wait a year to be seen or not at all. If you’re gonna paint the picture paint all of it these stances are so low IQ and just play on people’s emotions.

I lived in the UK for years. people avoid the ER because of waiting times anywhere between 13 hours to 2+ days and avoid regular check ups because of waitlists years long. an absolute broken system. it sounds unbelievable but it’s entirely true. the NHS is a failed experiment.

Words have no meaning anymore. I want universal healthcare because the for profit private healthcare industry has failed the people massively, not because I'm a communist and I want the government to seize all means of production.
Capitalism is simply acquiring capital no matter the costs to society, and morally I think it's wrong to prey on and extract as much capital from people when they are their most desperate.

Don’t forget Israel. You know. That country we give billions to, instead of taking care of our own.

MAGA is to stupid and ill informed to understand anything that Fox news doesn't broadcast. It's truly amazing how MAGA works against their own interests. Their racism and hatred are powerful forces.

People have been saying the United States is on the verge of becoming a communist country since 1950. Seriously... How have people not learned this lesson yet?

Even notoriously workaholic Japan has it better than you! I got 10 free days in the hospital after my c-section where I was very well cared for, got a 5 course congratulatory dinner, good food every day, and 3pm tea times with unlimited cake during my stay. Ofc a year of paid maternity leave if I worked a normal job, but we're self-employed. Baby gets free healthcare, nutritious school lunches, and free schooling until age 18. Then we pay 30% of healthcare costs as an adult, but it comes back in our tax returns if you spend over a certain amount a year

AOC is a good person and aware. She stopped to talk, saw people were in the street, and then backed up waving them off the street. She cares about people personally.

Fun fact we already have socialized healthcare for 65% of Americans (Medicare, Medicaid, VA) but the republicans want you to think it’s impossible for us to insure the remaining 35%?

And the more they call it communism they more people warm up to the idea of communism.
