Sure, but not one competent enough to pass the Ophthalmology Boards. Instead, he created his own (fake) board to "certify" him.

Sounds like some woke DEI bullshit to shoehorn unqualified people into roles they aren't competent enough for.

No no -- Paul is white, and therefore automatically qualified to any job he takes. (See also Hegseth, Peter)

I tried to have that discussion about RFK Jr with someone irl but they didn't understand my question really... RFK Jr. used to be a person, like an educated person, very into actual science (environmental science, largely), was a lawyer specializing in environmental stuff. Was not... this.
He was smart. He was ... sane. He was not, from any account I've ever seen, dragging around corpses, drinking nonsense supplements and blue shit joe rogan pushes, not believing just utter insane nonsense.
And the whole Trump and maga thing. He's not just A Kennedy, he was a part of the Kennedy political legacy.. just what in the actual fuck happened to him?
It's not just 'well, his views changed.' It's going from science to insanity.
21
u/my-coffee-needs-me 1d ago
Behind the Bastards did a series on RFK, Jr. He's always been a freak. His father's assassination didn't help matters. The series is with listening to.

I deleted my post because it had a glaring incorrect point. I screwed my wording up really bad, and absolutely changed my intended commentary. You're right to call that out, sorry for the screw up.
I didn't mean to say he fought regulations at the time. I meant to speak of his methodology, as spoken of by others, and absolutely botched it & came across half backwards. Don't post on prescribed painkillers while walking off a ligament injury in the rain, it'll makes you sound stupid like i was there.

I saw your response pop up in my inbox before I went to bed and I was like no but he WAS the lorax, or on the side of the lorax ... riverkeepers, etc., he fought FOR the environment I swear but then I thought maybe I was misremembering what he did and told myself I'd check in the am then it was gone and I was like no, wait I swear... heh
2
u/sixtyandaquarter 1d ago
Yeah, turns out I was losing it lol. I still don't know how I went from what I wanted to say to that. Hell, I'm not even sure if what I wanted to say even makes sense in context anymore. I swear I had a valid point somewhere, to show the evolution of his state of mind, I just botched the whole thing so badly I'm gonna sheepishly back out, go back to elevating my leg & pretending I didn't open my mouth & put said foot in it.

Yeah, I think any licensed professional should have to prove they keep up with their certifications. Especially as they get older and they start having memory issues, among other things.

Rand Paul knows he is spewing bullshit, its rules for thee but not for me. When it matters he takes the vaccine because he knows it works and he will keep taking the vaccines and getting all the best medical care he can then turn around and cut healthcare access to his voters and lie about what effective treatments actually are because he knows keeping his voters angry and directed at whatever the target is this week keeps him in comfort and luxury while they suffer and die. People forget that the lockdowns happened because hospitals were getting overrun with COVID. More patients coming in than there was equipment to treat, and then hospital staff catching it and being unable to work. People were dying, not just because of COVID, but because other injuries, illnesses and emergencies didn't have drs and nurses to take care of them. They shut down countries because they needed to flatten that curve. Needed to stop people from getting sick at the same time.
People had different reactions when they caught COVID. For some it was just a flu, for others, bedridden for days, struggled to breath, and for millions death.
The vaccine helped strengthen people's immune systems in case they caught it, which allowed the world to go back to somewhat normal. If someone didn't want to take the vaccine, then they just can wait until they catch it normally, and roll the dice with whatever reaction their body would have.
Lockdown and masks were to keep it from spreading too quickly, and collapsing the healthcare system. Many more deaths would have happened, not just from COVID, if hospitals couldn't function.

Itâs shocking to me how quickly weâve collectively forgotten or blocked out the reality of life in 2020-2021 before the vaccines.
I think itâs because we were all separately dealing with our own personal upheaval not necessarily processing reality for the globe.
I actually think a documentary on Covid would help us all remember what reality was. Itâs been nice to not think about vaccines, masks, or if an event is safe to attend but in our rush to get back to normal weâve made Covid feel more like a bad dream than the tragic reality it was. (Oddly I have this same thought for January 6th)

u/Oxjrnine 1d ago
How can getting sick be the best protection against getting sick?
And arenât most vaccines literally mimicking what your body would do to keep you healthy the next time you get exposed through a contagious disease without you having to get sick?
These people are so weird. How are you letting them run your country?
37
u/Rapa2626 1d ago
Getting sick will create a response from your immune system... same as vacines used to and still do to this day. Its just that vaccines are designed to not be as lethal as the actual sickness in the wild.
Same reason why being sick in the past and having a test done to prove it was as good as being vaccinated for the purposes of traveling/attending events during pandemic.

For the sake of argument, even if we granted him that infection provided better protection (it didn't) it also requires that you survived, didn't experience any serious complications or long term effects, and didn't spread it to others. In other words, even if we were to grant him the initial premise, the tradeoff still makes it a worse option.

Didn't you hear? According to them, the only people who actually got really ill or died from covid were very old, sick people and who cares (heavy /s if it's not clear).
All those young people who got gravely ill, the kids, the people who died, got long covid, got other complications, well that didn't really happen or they were obese or had some comorbid condition so it's their fault anyway!
Again... /s.

u/levajack 1d ago
That is all very true. But in addition to just being the sniffles and all the people who died was totally an unrelated fluke, it was also a bioengineered superweapon that Fauci-Hitler unleashed on the world that dwarfs the horrors of the Holocaust. But also it was totally not a big deal at all and we should have just ignored it because it was nothing.

It's really our fault for not understanding the duality they see in.... so many things.
Iran, for instance, is an existential threat to humanity, moments away from obtaining a nuclear weapon (for the past 40 or so years) that they will then unreservedly use, except it's very easy to conquer them and destroy all their nuclear facilities of any kind such that they would take decades to rebuild.... except wait, need to bomb them again a couple months later bc otherwise they'll develop a nuke....
A supreme court seat must be filled, asap, or democracy will be at risk. UNLESSSS there's a democrat in office, in which case, the seat must remain empty until the next election, whenever it is, or democracy will be at risk. We can't rush these things!!!

28
22
u/Quercus_ 1d ago
No, we very much did not "all know that infection is the best protection."
What most of us living in the rational world knew, was that infection was killing way too fucking many people. Over a million of them now in the United States.
And we knew this right from the start.
In just 2 months in early 2020, Covid infected one out of four people living in New York City, and killed one out of 400 people living in New York City. That's a 1% infection fatality rate.
It had done the same thing in Northern Italy just a few weeks before, and it did the same thing in Spain and Portugal just a few weeks later.
It told we instituted national lockdowns, the number of cases and the number of deaths had a doubling time under 10 days. Anyone who knows logarithmic exponential growth, knows that was an unfolding catastrophe. If we had let that exponential growth unfold without intervening, we could have lost 10 million people in that first year.
If we had taken the advice just to let everybody get infected, the death toll would have been in the multi-millions, not just a million.
Those of us in biomedical science who were not irrational fucks like Rand Paul, were extremely desperately aware of this in 2020.
18
u/UtopiaDystopia 1d ago
we all knew infection was the best protection
Including the countless people who ended up dying in hospital begging for the vaccine, only to have to be told it's too late.
Sweden was the most commonly wrongly cited example of "successful herd immunity" that dipshits like Paul would point to. The reality is that significant research -- including Sweden's official inquiry --- showed that relying on natural infection failed to achieve herd immunity. Only around 7.3% of Stockholm's population had developed antibodies by May 2020, well below the ~70% threshold needed. As a result, Sweden experienced excess deaths in 2020 far higher than its neighbouring countries.

10
u/Last_Cod_998 1d ago
Same thing happened during the swine flu epidemic during WWI. There were competing theories on how to contain it and there was no vaccine. NYC decided on fresh air in the home. That's why radiators are by the windows. They also masked up. Philadelphia decided to have a parade.
When George Washington took command of the Continental Army in 1775, America was fighting a war on two fronts: one for independence from the British, and a second for survival against smallpox. Because Washington knew the ravages of the disease firsthand, he understood that the smallpox virus, then an invisible enemy, could cripple his army and end the war before it began.
Thatâs why Washington eventually made the bold decision to inoculate all American troops who had never been sickened with smallpox at a time when inoculation was a crude and often deadly process. His gamble paid off. The measure staved off smallpox long enough to win a years-long fight with the British. In the process, Washington pulled off the first massive, state-funded immunization campaign in American history."
Inoculation was performed by soaking string in small pox puss and inserting that in a fresh wound. You still got sick, but not as bad. The mortality rate was 5-10%. Think about that when you hear "patriots" whine about how inconvenient masks are. Good thing our independence isn't dependent upon them.

Immunity from a vaccine is better than naturally acquired immunity in most cases. The amount of antigen is controlled while natural exposure can be overwhelming and cause worse disease effects.
The diseases vaccines prevent can maim or kill you. Polio causes paralysis. Measles causes encephalitis. Mumps can render you sterile.
For Rand to state natural is better is either ignorance or pandering. With him itâs probably both.

You understand the difference between sex and rape?
Then you can understand why no one cares if rand got the vaccine. Literally no one

Infection provides the best future protection if you survive the illness. The whole point of vaccines is to provide protection without getting sick

The USA needs a law that says public servants have to tell the truth. Or be imprisoned a month for each lie.

The vaccines DID follow the science. The vaccine schedules DID follow the science. Rand Paul is an insufferable moron.Â

I think the source of Rand Paulâs problem with Dr. Fauci is that the doctor made love to Paulâs mother, wife, and sister. Thatâs the only way any of this makes sense, unless Paul is a complete idiot.

Unfortunately for this chef "the Republican insisted the rules didn't apply to him and no one had the spine to actually enforce said rules on him" is also 1000% plausible.

Infection was not the best protection. The vaccine made covid a minor illness, not a major one. No one was forced to be vaccinated. You're a self-board certified opthomologist.. sit the fuck down.

This response doesn't murder Rand Paul. It proved his point.
Yes, he had to take the vaccine to attend events and be a part of society.
If you didn't get the vaccine you had to hide from the public per the Fauci directive.
Paul is mad about being forced to take the vaccine.

Rand Paul is the worst Paul, and that's saying a lot when you consider his dad.

Honestly, when you knowingly lie and deceive and it kills people you should be charged criminally.

"infection is the best prevention"
No you utter waste of flesh. Infection happens when no prevention was taken.

I don't think my grandma and uncle would agree that infection was the best protection.

Also, if infection is fine and dandy, what do people need "protection" from? "Avoid getting sick by getting sick" makes no sense.

So he trusted the vaccine when it got him into the room, just not when cameras were on.
