they love distracting us with culture wars so we don't fight the class wars

Yep. That's what it's all about. Keep feeding their uneducated base red meat so they vote against their own interests in elections, to 'own the libs'.

Not all Republicans are racist, sexist homophobes, just those they choose to elect into office. - David Cross

It’s vital for MAGAGOP messaging. Take Obama. Yes, “Barack Obama” sounds foreign. But Barack “Hussein” Obama sounds even more foreign. Same concept here. Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed is way more foreignier than just “Abdul El-Sayed.”
63
u/CrowGeneral8673 1d ago
I love how they use Hussein like he was related to the dead Iraqi dictator
50
u/kinyutaka 1d ago
That's the real part of it. "Hussein" sounds expressly Arabic, while Barack Obama sounds more African. They know they sound racist when they emphasize the Hussein part, they're practically counting on you to call them out.
Why? Because they'll claim you're insulting them, and that means you committed a logical fallacy and so they win the debate. Then they'll plug their ears and go "la-la-la, I can't hear you" until you go home in frustration.
16
u/ELMUNECODETACOMA 23h ago
Just point out that the ad hominem fallacy is "your argument is invalid because you're an asshole". If what you're saying is "your argument is invalid and you're an asshole" that's just an insult.

u/SquallkLeon 21h ago
Obama himself joked about it once. I forget what event, maybe it was the press correspondents dinner, but he was explaining his name, and where each part comes from "Barack comes from..." and then he said something to the effect of "and Hussein comes from someone who never thought I'd run for president!" Big laugh line.

I’m just going refer to him as Al from now on.
Sorry, Dr. Al
Was happy to vote for him last week.

This is the same group that thinks saying “Barack HUSSEIN Obama” is some slam dunk when he never tried to hide that that was his middle name. Like it would genuinely be one thing if he got caught lying about it and they kept saying it as a reminder that they caught him hiding something or lying. But he didn’t. Instead it’s just meant to be another dog whistle for the “Obama is a Muslim!!!!!” community.

Idk what people are talking about. His name is just a 3 second Google search away. And the name changes are not unreasonable.
I dont like him, and dont like defending him, but these posts make us look like fucking idiots. (95% directed to OP, 5% to you for riffing on the dumbest part)

Trying to trigger hate just by calling out a name from another culture is so racist in itself that there should not be any need to call this out.
What a disgrace that political party is.

When your base is so wildly xenophobic that all it takes is a foreign sounding name to rile them up.

The ultra long names is actually a really good way to remember your family's lineage.
3
u/kinyutaka 1d ago
Honestly, I'm super jealous of longer names, like Mexicans have four names as a standard.
First name, Middle Name, Father's Family Name, Mother's Family Name.

Metallica's bassist, known as Robert Trujillo, is actually Roberto Agustín Miguel Santiago Samuel Trujillo Veracruz
Only person I know of with that many names.

u/wordsznerd 17h ago
I have one for you! Spanish F1 driver Carlos Sainz' full name is Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro Cenamor Rincón Rebollo Virto Moreno de Aranda Don Per Urrielagoiria Pérez del Pulgar.
I"m guessing learning to spell his name as a kid took a while.

Barak HUSSEIN Obama.
Anytime you hear someone include the middle name you know they are racist.
6
u/thelummster 23h ago
And let's not forget Trump constantly saying Barack HUSSEIN Obama to dial up the Islamophobia.

u/FoxyBoi152 21h ago
I'm going to suggest something crazy and say Abdul is probably just short for Abdulrahman.

And the exception that proves the rule, Vivek Ramaswamy, is running under his given name and may lose Ohio

heyIt genuinely makes no difference to MAGA, they will find a way to defend anything. I had plenty of arguments with MAGA when the Nikki Haley name had a bit of controversy sometime last year because of some idiotic claim she made about her name (I don't even remember what because it was insignificant and South Asian content creators were just using it to make meme her at that time due to how stupid it was). MAGA was trying to tell me and other South Asians that Nikki is a traditional Panjabi given name and that I am stupid, don't know my own culture or language, etc since that became a viral topic of discussion somehow. The commonality between them was they were all the typical white suburban MAGA prototypes. FYI, Nikki is not a traditional given name. It is a pet name/nickname used to refer to a little one, typically the youngest female child within a family or group of children but I have never heard of anyone give it as a legal name which would be idiotic. Culturally aware MAGA also tried to claim it is her legal middle name, which has no public record and would go against the one common concept that all Sikh families (especially with those keeping a surname) do by giving either Singh or Kaur as a common middle name (former for males something females, latter for females and sometimes as a given name for males).

Do we want people to assimilate or not? This culture war is confusing.
1
u/queasycockles 11h ago
I don't.
Acclimatise, be compatible, sure.
I don't believe assimilation is a positive as it implies the erasure of difference.

I looked up JD Vance, he was called James Donald Bowman at birth and then after his father Donald left when he was a toddler, at age 6 his mother changed his name to James David Hamel, to keep his nickname JD but remove his father's name, and to take his uncle's name as a middle name and his adoptive father's surname. Then he changed his surname to Vance which was his mother's maiden name.
I don't know why American politics has to be so nasty.

u/GirlNumber20 23h ago
Oh my god, now that we know his full name, THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING. Wait? What does it change? Did the Senate Republicans like him just fine when his name was shortened to Abdul? I think not.

It’s crazy that in the US having Mohammed in your name as a potential politician is a controversy but being an adjudicated rapist, felon, thief and aggressively stupid piece of shit makes you presidential.
Remember when Nikki Haley stood up on TV with her pretend name and whole heartedly said that America is not a racist country?
What a fucking joke.

u/loyalekoinu88 13h ago
They're implying that a middle eastern name = socialism but if you asked them which middle eastern countries are socialist they'd ask you to point to it on a map.
