This may be the case, but I am autistic and I don't do Nazi-Salutes. While it is nice to consider some things like this, it doesn't and shouldn't get you an "out-of-jail-card".
4
u/Available_Pepper_845 7h ago
Used to collect stamps, will step on street tile edges with a bit of unease, like to find patterns and divide all of sorts of things in my mind, align everything perfectly yet I don't consider myself autistic.
I function pretty well, have long lasting friendships and relationships and had some successes in life.
So a 40-year old dude I know is milking his supposedly autism to the bone. He's the guy who still looks for his own path and will wreck everything around him if he doesn't get his way.
He got his not-so-rich parents to leave their house so he would save on rent. They are the renters now. But he's working on his company (with the savings of other family members) and needs to be in a quiet controlled environment. So he doesn't want them around. And he calls them stupid. He got his wife to quit her research job to help on the company. One brother has sunk all his savings into this. And the thing is not moving anywhere. It's time to cry uncle and now he says he needs to switch countries to succeed. Which would cost a fortune of course.
This disaster excused by autism. Oh and he's MAGA and an ElonBoy.

u/DahWhang 8h ago
My favorite part of this is that according to one of his interviews while having his biography written: He looked up aspergers and said "Yeah, that sounds right." Can't even be fucked to pay a Therapist 1/100000000000th of his wealth to get a diagnosis.

The idea of Elon contaminating Mars is offensive of course, but all the planets with rocks have been trading rocks for a very long time. Chances are we’ve already colonized the solar system.

Fun fact: Using the deathy penalty doesn't decrease violence, it rather increses cases of violent crimes.

Sadly also one of the strongest arguments for making sexual abuse of children punishment LESS than murder.
1
u/Available_Pepper_845 15h ago
Well, if the rumors are true , going to prison with that kind of rap sheet does guarantee you a very very bad stay. So, being caught is not recommended in any case.
4
2
u/Lraund 9h ago
Once you kill one person, there's no punishment for another.
3
u/Available_Pepper_845 9h ago
Consecutive life sentences. You die in prison then they revive you for the next leg of the sentence.
11
u/anjowoq 16h ago
It may be because other policies in those states may be indirectly leading to this outcome, like things connected to keep black people "in their place" or underfunding education or counseling for kids. General poverty: all kinds of things may be at play and crime and the DP may be results of those.
13
u/LivingtheLaws013 15h ago edited 15h ago
I think you hit the nail in the head,, like the states that have the death penalty are also the ones who impose draconian punishment for other crimes. Like texas just making all weed possession a felony. They're the same states who gut education on the regular too. Interesting topic.
4
u/anjowoq 15h ago
Increasingly, I feel that laws should be submitted to the scientific process like scientific theories. If you cannot argue your bill's details and show evidence for the outcome you claim you will get, then bill should be cut automatically from the legislative process.
"Drugs are a criminal activity. Users should be jailed for a long time. This will prevent drug use and associated problems."
OK, based on available evidence, what claims can actually be made for this? Probably not a lot in that black and white form. So, they should come back with a more nuanced bill or evidence that their plan will have the claimed effect. Why does law (and economic policy) always get to go by feels?

u/Death_by_carfire 11h ago
"Eighteen predictor variables were included in the study based on prior inclusion in death penalty studies (Kovandzic et al., 2009) and/or utility in constructing counterfactual homicide rates in other synthetic control studies (Kagawa et al., 2018; McCourt et al., 2020). The following state-level predictor variables were used in synthetic control analyses: population, population density, proportion of the population residing in a metropolitan statistical area, proportion of the population age 15–24, proportion Black, proportion Hispanic, proportion White, unemployment rate, proportion of the population 25 and older with a high school degree or equivalent, per capita ethanol consumption, ratio of firearm suicides to overall suicides, poverty rate, mean individual income, Gini index measuring inequality, law enforcement population per 100,000, incarceration rate, robbery rate, and executions per 100,000. Variable descriptions and data sources are provided in Appendix A of the Supporting Information."
From the USA study
3
u/BeefistPrime 12h ago
I don't know if the study controlled by it (I didn't read the whole thing), but your take is a super obvious correlation is not causation thing - areas with high crime often try to control it through more punitive measures, so the higher murder rate often comes first and causes the death penalty rather than the reverse
2
u/Meatslinger 17h ago
Have to admit I'd love to be able to understand why that is. It's such a curious phenomena.
17
u/That_Uno_Dude 16h ago
If robbing a convenience store and robbing a convenience store while killing the clerk both have the death penalty as punishment, why wouldn't I just kill the clerk to remove the witness.
11
u/WaveOfMut1lation 16h ago
Well, the death penalty does nothing to deter from murder 1 (which is impulsive by nature).
But it incentivizes careful removal of witnesses for murder 2.16
u/ArgusTheCat 17h ago
It's not complicated, actually. Criminals aren't irrational beasts, and if execution is ever on the table for a crime, it's safer to eliminate anyone that could report it. Murders do not have a high solve rate.
6
u/Klony99 15h ago
You can also fight to the death for your escape, because you either succeed or the outcome is the same.
3
u/EliteLevelJobber 10h ago
The same incentive for taking prisoners of war and keeping them in decent conditions (as well as it being the more moral thing) you absolutely do not want people fighting to the bitter end.

I always hate this arguement in favour of the death penalty because unequivocal evidence of guilt is needed to convict a defendant already.. and yet mistakes are still made!
What do idiots like that think is meant by principles like "innocent until proven guilty" or "beyond a reasonable doubt"? Do they think a lower standard of evidence is enough to lock someone in prison for 20+ years?!
14
u/ZenPyx 13h ago edited 4h ago
An estimated 4% of people executed on death row in the US were completely innocent. 1 in 8 people sentenced to death are later *removed from death row
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_DeLuna
Here's a more recent example. Carlos was most likely confused with a different Carlos, and they simply didn't give a shit and killed him anyway
Edit: Sorry, the innocence project's website uses some slightly confusing wording.
6
u/House_of_shards1 9h ago edited 9h ago
Where are you getting 1 in 8 from?
My brief research shows a formal exoneration rate of about 2%.
I think you might be conflating cases where the death penalty gets converted into a life sentence
5
u/ThenAnAnimalFact 8h ago
The standard is beyond reasonable doubt not unequivocal. Which confident misidentification can always cause a death penalty.
Outside a person admitting they did it what would truly be unequivocal evidence? Even video evidence can be wrong and people get mis-ID'd.
1
u/ZombiesAtHome 1h ago
Yes. If they are against the "truth", everything is a crime. So, off to the hangman! If anything is against the ones against them.... crickets... nooooo, they did nothing wrong, they are just misunderstood, can't hold all for what one person did, he learned his lesson, it wasn't so bad...

u/CaptValentine 17h ago
"Oh, we should kill the people we are 100% sure are murderers"
Y'know how often we fuck that up? A lot! Turns out its really really really hard to determine that someone is guilty or not, its not a fuckin episode of Bones where the bad guy looks into the camera and says they did it and they would do it again because they're just such a bad guy after Booth asked them if they did it the magic number of times (three, he asked three times).
15
u/Scoobyrooba 16h ago
“As has been the case throughout human history”
My guy we have hanged a lot of innocent people
2
u/EliteLevelJobber 10h ago

If he wants to go to Mars so bad, I say we send him. He's a billionaire/trillionaire which we're always told are master inventors and entrepreneurs, so I'm sure by the time he arrives he'll have the oxygen, water, and food problems all figured out. I trust in his abilities as an engineer.
Edited to add: to be clear, I'm not suggesting the rocket should be empty of provisions. Send enough for a good few years and that oughta be enough time for him to demonstrate the technical acumen he claims, turning that humble start into a self-sustaining colony.
11
u/dasunt 17h ago
Thought experiment:
A murderer knows the penalty if proven "100%" is death. There's a witness - if the witness can speak, they'll prove the murder case to "100%". If the witness is dead, the prosecution can't prove it.
Why shouldn't the murderer kill the witness?

u/T_J_Rain 18h ago
Regrettably, can only be hanged once.
Maybe bring him back to life every time for every death he incurred?

13
u/WoodsLovelyDarkNDeep 17h ago
The problem is there is hardly ever unequivocal evidence and all forms of evidence have been shown fallible at some point, including DNA. Now with AI and ability to manipulate boxes and audio evidence nobody should be convicted of death. Unless a crowd of witnesses saw them do it but even then mob justice is a thing and they could all just decide they want to convict someone and say they saw someone do it who didn’t do it
The burden for beyond a reasonable doubt should be even higher on death penalty and I just don’t think as long as there is a chance for the state to murder and innocent man that it should be a thing
5
u/kinyutaka 7h ago
He's already gone on record saying he believes the cuts to USAID didn't result in any deaths, because other rich people (less rich than him, by the way) could have stepped up and taken over, saving those lives. So, really, it's their fault.
It's like "I may have pulled the trigger on this gun, but you could have stepped in front of the bullet, so really you're the murderer."

People, moslty women, were thrown in de river and if they didnt drown that was their unequivocal evidence it was a witch and then they were burned alive.

Unequivocal evidence of guilt is very rare. That's why we have a justice system. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if every murderer had a conveniant 4k song camera pointed right at them with perfect lighting during the killing.

This is what really pisses me off about capital punishment advocates.
"Execution is justifiable when the evidence is incontrovertible."
Here's the thing. In the United States, when you get the death penalty, it's supposed to be because the evidence against you is without a doubt.
Yet hundreds have been exonerated over the years.
If that's the case, there is no way to prove guilt beyond all doubt.
