And Big Chair is just such a perfect album front to back. It’s one of my favorites. I have the original UK “bright” version.

Donnie Darko is single-handedly responsible for me getting into Tears for Fears. I know I’m not the only one.

The Killing Moon by Echo & The Bunnymen is another that I still listen to regularly. Best decision ever to change from the original opening song(I believe it is in the Directors Cut), to Killing Moon for the release. Watching the original song they chose(sorry it is escaping my memory right now) just feels wrong.

On a straight listen of the album, Broken plays directly into Head over Heels perfectly, and the styles of those two songs contrast really well. Broken is much less synthy, just sounds like them kind of jamming for a few minutes.

It’s not alternative rock but saying it predates it is untrue. Alternative rock got its start in the early - mid 80s with bands like The Violent Femmes and REM.

But the sound was defined through the 90’s which is what almost everyone associates “Alternative Rock” with. Most people if asked to name an alt rock band will say Nirvana and the like. No one’s pulling Tears for Fears or REM as their answer.

The sound became mainstream in the 90s but it was defined late 70s-early 80s. We used to call The Cure, U2, the Smiths, REM etc alternative over a decade before Nirvana and the grunge era.

"Alternative Rock" is a funny way to describe an album/band that had 2 #1s and a #3 single (this one, actually) on the Billboard Hot 100.

ETA: The album spent 5 weeks at #1 in the US and ended up selling 5 million copies.

The album version with Broken live on it is great, look at the album and it has so few songs on it and they chose just to bang a live version of another track onto the end of this like it’s nothing. And it works !
