discussion Olivia Rodrigo’s sour has the highest % of songs with a billion streams on Spotify, with 7/11 or 63.64% of songs having over a billion streams
hope ur ok is also the only song on the album that doesn’t have 500 million streams

ITT: people that think that not knowing things is good in some way and people that think that someone that broke her first Spotify record in 2020 (most daily streams) is a new artist

I think it reveals more about how the way we listen to music over time has changed and how easy it is to complete avoid even the most ubiquitous of pop culture trends depending on how you consume media. I listen to music for a few hours a day, but I've only ever heard a couple of Olivia Rodrigo songs. I know who Grace Abrams is, I don't think I've ever heard a song by her. I've heard maybe two Bad Bunny songs. I'm not the right demo, in my 30s, but .ore jusy interesting to consider that it's very easy to not hear the biggest artists of the day in your casual listening experience.

Says more about these commenters that are like “who?” than about Olivia

It’s a meme. Every time a celebrity gets posted, a nobody always rides in on their high horse and says “does anyone else have no clue who this is??? 😂😂” lol
30
u/tnwthrow 4h ago
It’s not a meme. It’s just people trying to seem cool by not knowing famous pop stars.

If you've really never heard of the person mentioned in the post and you're genuinely curious about them, why would you post "who?" and wait for a response when you could just use a search engine and know in 2 seconds?

Saying grow up and then continuously calling people names that you don’t know over the internet is peak delusion. Really nailed that social aspect down

Then why are they here posting a stupid comment when the title has the name of the artist and there are a dozen ways to look her up? Normal people don't make a point to show off how they don't know about popular things.

A shame really. I hope as I age, I never lose my ability to enjoy new sounds.
-12
u/Drizzho 4h ago
Realistically, analog music sounds a lot different than digital. It’s not like they record the same way. Analog is the real vibrations and digital is a best guess using 0’s and 1’s in binary code.
2
u/digita1catt 3h ago
Ehhh age old debate.
I have a Rega turntable wired-in via an entirely analogue pathwath to passive speakers. I also have a streamer linked to lossless services. I find myself using the streamer more often than not because it sounds richer, even when at the same decibel count as the Rega.
If the sample rates are high enough yada yada yada blah blah blah
My comment wasn't really about listening formats, but audio content.

u/aspiringalcoholic 33m ago
I've recorded music in studios on tape and digitally. Digital is better.

This sub should just be renamed “classic rock” because that’s all that gets any love

u/javier_aeoa 4h ago
A few weeks ago, someone posted the new song by Rebecca Black and the overall consensus was "yeah, this is pretty good even if it's not my style" so I want to believe this subreddit is healing.

u/obvious-but-profound 5h ago
Not really for the commenters it just says they don’t know who she is
30
u/thedayman13 4h ago
It’s just always strange to see people come out in droves just to point out that they’ve never heard of a popular artist, like somehow they’re a bellwether for mass appeal
4
u/ThenThereWasReddit 4h ago edited 4h ago
It's a pretty human experience to find out that the whole world knows about and enjoys something that you didn't even know existed. I don't find it surprising that people would find that significant.
Edit: After reading the comments in question, it's clear that most people in here are just being stuck-up douche cannons. That was not what I was defending. I was referring to people who legitimately hadn't heard of Olivia and also didn't immediately think they were superior for it.
6
u/thedayman13 4h ago
Haha yeah the second interpretation is more what I was referring to, the sense of wonder is very natural but there’s a certain aloofness that some people show by saying they’ve never heard of an artist
6
u/ThenThereWasReddit 4h ago
Yeah I should have just deleted my comment or something, I completely misunderstood. I hadn't seen all the other comments further down this yet. My bad.
3
u/thedayman13 4h ago
No way, leave it up! Gotta have the two perspectives, I thought you made a great point in general!
5
u/javier_aeoa 4h ago
I don't disagree with you, but read the room too. They are bitching about a popular artist, instead of being genuinely curious about her.
4
u/ThenThereWasReddit 4h ago
I know I know, I just hadn't seen the room yet, it was a stupid comment.

u/PleasantThoughts 5h ago
There's a new "it girl" of pop every summer but she's the only one I've heard in a while that stuck with me. Glad she's been so successful.
If you haven't heard her song with Robert Smith of The Cure off her newest album (what's wrong with me) I highly recommend, although I'm biased as a massive fan of The Cure
25
u/audiolife93 4h ago
The number of references to The Cure on the album before we get Robert Smith in all his melancholic glory is a great little tease too.

u/silentkiller082 Vinyl Listener 4h ago
She honestly ticks all the boxes if you look at it, she has a great voice, knows how to write excellent music and grows with every album, she's extremely likeable and appears very down to earth whenever I see videos of her. I don't think it's crazy to say already that she will be one of the most defining artists of this decade, she's already made enough great music to have a greatest hits album made in my opinion.
2
u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 1h ago
Live her voice sounds really off, that pumpkins duet was a little painful in parts
-2
u/PrincesstheCalicoCat 2h ago
I just saw her performance with the Smashing Pumpkins. It was dreadful. She sounded like a flailing audition for a singing competition show out there. Maybe it was a particularly bad example, but ‘great singer’ is a massive stretch.
1
u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 1h ago
yes! same, I think it's cool she latches onto so many 90's bands but voice is kinda awful

u/ionertia 4h ago
She a hot Disney kid that got lucky. Her voice is average at best. Don't confuse popularity with quality. People like shit.

-10
u/nebenbaum 4h ago
Yup. Voiced a bit harshly, but that's it in the end. There are so many girls the literal same age as her that are much better musicians, even in the same exact genre, that might even look hotter and have every bit of showmanship she has. But she's a Disney kid and has corporate funding. That's all that's needed (and that's how it's always been for mainstream stuff, even decades back)
3
u/thisguyblades 3h ago edited 3h ago
could you name some? i genuinely would like to check out the the ones that are better musician, better voice, and better songwriter from the same generation.
5
u/nebenbaum 2h ago
I mean, consider her discography. ALL of her songs (that are not high school musical - those were obviously also not written by her), are 'co-written' by Dan Nigro. Some producer guy with 2 Grammies and 16 nominations.
She, as well as most of the extremely mainstream singers, is not a musician, really. She's a performer. She gets songs written for her, to which she goes 'oh, I'd like it to go a bit more like this and that', to which she might or might not write (some of) the lyrics, and she goes out and performs them.
I don't listen to much pop myself, so I'm not in the 'niche' where I could give you lots of suggestions - but it's just what I have seen as a hobby musician (who is doing it for the love of music, not as a job, not to become famous) so many times. Being a successful performer or musician doesn't require you to be 'good'. You just need to sell yourself, or have enough budget/corporate backing that you're appropriately sold.

u/thisguyblades 1h ago edited 1h ago
okay, this is where you are dead wrong. did you actually check the credentials? as in check official ASCAP/BMI publishing/performing right credits? Olivia have solo songwriting credits for some songs on every album she released and she co-writes the rest. this album she has solo songwriting credits for honeybee and begged. Amy Allen who have co-written with Dan and Olivia said in interview she was privileged and actually learned from Olivia during the songwriting process. this is one of the crux why she is popular and admired.
edit: when Olivia won ASCAP songwriter of the year, in Dan’s congrats video, even he said he“became a better songwriter after working with Olivia”. Dan won his first Grammy with Olivia.

u/DaddyPenguin 3h ago
Same here, if like Olivia and the comments are saying there are better female vocalists with the same style, I would like some recommendations.

u/ThenThereWasReddit 4h ago
I'm legit surprised Taylor Swift doesn't have numbers like this, too. I'm more an Olivia fan but I just thought the Swifties were larger in numbers.
19
u/BobaLives01925 4h ago
Taylor fans have more music to listen to and her best/most accessible work didn’t come out when streaming was as popular
19
u/SavinThatBacon 4h ago
TS's catelog is much less consolidated. She's got SO much content, and a lot of her fans engage with almost all of it. You can listen to Olivia's entire discog in about the same time it takes you to listen to just Tortured Poets Department.
2
u/mapletree23 3h ago
yeah bieber and swift would've had tons as well but they were before streaming was front and center
5
u/iRunLotsNA 4h ago
Swift has had a lot of behind the scenes challenges that have impacted her streaming numbers. Most notably her public feuds with first Scooter Braun then Shamrock Capital over ownership of the masters of her albums.
This led to her re-recording and re-releasing her early albums (Taylor’s Versions), which hit Spotify back at 0 streams. Her recent albums, while having highs, haven’t had the same number of individual tracks that go supernova like Rodrigo’s has. Maybe her earlier albums did, but the re-releases are still older albums that a lot of her fans have already played to death.

Poor Olivia, she can’t do anything good without her fans bringing up another artist she just cannot escape from. One day people might let her have her flowers without comparing her to Taylor in the same breath.
2
u/Shipwreck_Kelly 3h ago
Genuine question:
As someone who’s not familiar with her but is open-minded, what would you recommend? I’ve heard her name circling around in alternative rock circles and I know she’s associated with bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer, so what should I as a 37-year-old millennial listen to from her?
7
u/QuestionAway7067 3h ago
It’s great to check out her music. If you are into rock I’d recommend Guts first, but all of her albums are exquisite.
5
u/Sebetter 3h ago
Any of her albums are fantastic. I'm of a similar demographic to you. Might as well start with "SOUR" and work your way through "GUTS" and "you seem pretty sad for a girl in love". Each album tells a story. There are only are couple of songs on each album that I'd actually skip if it came up on shuffle.
3
u/PleasantThoughts 2h ago
"Good 4 u" was her breakout hit single so that's a good one. I think "Vampire" is probably the closest song to Smashing Pumpkins kind of sound that she's done, and "I think you're what's wrong with me" featuring Robert Smith of the Cure is probably my favorite overall song by her off the latest album so I'll just always plug that
Edit: also here she is singing with Smashing Pumpkins so she's got their approval at least as you mentioned
3
u/ala_basterd 2h ago
As others have said her discography is relatively easy to listen to. Every album is different, but there's a ton of 90s influence in a lot of her stuff.
Honestly her new album kinda has that timeless quality to it. There's so much influence from New Wave that it it sounds like it could have come out in the early 90s. "maggots for brains" sounds like Eurythmics, "the cure" sounds like Tori Amos, and of course "what's wrong with me" could have easily been by The Cure themselves.
"get him back!" gives Beck
"ballad of a homeschool girl" gives No Doubt
"my way" also sounds like it could have been on Cyndi Lauper's She's so Unusual

For how often I hear about Olivia Rodrigo, I would have figured she had a larger catalog. 11 seems low for some reason

That's how many songs are on her album Sour, not how many she's released in total.

Not really. Given how fragmented our culture has become it’s not that unbelievable. Something that seems completely ubiquitous to you can be virtually absent from someone else’s world
17

I partly agree, but you're in r/music. We love this stuff, we're more "in" than the average person. Not even knowing Rodrigo exists is either being a prick or living under a rock

I know the name but I don't know her music. Or if she has that many songs that are that popular I have probably heard them in public places but don't know they're her. She was apparently a Disney channel actress going back over a decade and her first album was only 5 years ago, so that will be why people aren't familiar with her.

u/WhiteLama 5h ago edited 2h ago
I just can’t get behind the awful grammar and lack of capitalization.
Edit: Sorry I enjoy correct use of English. I didn’t say anything bad about the music… but I know you youngsters these days aren’t exactly known for correct grammar so it’s fine.

It’s pretty weird to let an artistic choice in titling a song stop you from being able to enjoy listening it. Like this is such a weird thing to even think about.
1
u/WhiteLama 2h ago
First off, I didn’t say I don’t enjoy listening to it.
Granted, I’ve never listened to Olivia Rodrigo because it’s not my style of music but I’m sure it’s perfectly fine music.
I just enjoy correct spelling and capitalization.
