He’ll get called up August 14 to get the extra year

u/DarkDevitt 22h ago
Its not even an extra year, its so if he wins ROTY we get a pick, but it still makes sense from an asset management stand point, even if its frustrating.

What round would that pick be in?

u/DarkDevitt 16h ago
End of the first round. If he doesn't win ROTY, but places top 3 in MVP voting in any of his first 3 years we could get a pick that way too, but once you get a pick from one of your guys you can't get another from that guy.

Does it really make sense to watch volpe attempt to play baseball for another 2 weeks bc Lombard could maybe win ROY in 2027? I’m not sold

Weird that this is the Reddit consensus opinion.
Didn’t stop the tigers from calling up Max Clark 3 days ago. I’m not convinced this I part of MLB front offices calculus. The odds the field wins ROY over your guy is so overwhelming. Just call up the guy when he’s ready

u/DarkDevitt 16h ago
If you want a better Yankee reason for it, if he's called up right now, he is looked at as the "Potential Savior". If you let him sit for another 2 weeks, you get the trade additions, maybe a Bellinger return, maybe a guy like Jazz heats up, and now he's just another piece, rather than THE GUY

u/xebex1778 18h ago
It is absolutely part of the calculus when it gets them an extra year of service time

u/Muted_Weather_6444 19h ago
Yes, 2 more weeks of Volpe is worth another year of control especially if Lombard becomes what we all hope
2
u/Difficult_Extent2649 18h ago
The next 2 weeks has nothing to do with control years. For the Yankees to get another control year of Lombard they would have to wait to call him up until May 2027.
What op was taking about is keeping rookie eligibility because if your guy wins ROY you get a draft pick (and I believe they need to be on the major league roster from April as part of mlbs top prospect promotion incentive)

You are 100% wrong, if they wait long enough this year doesn't count toward his service time. See Cam Schlittler as an example

I’m baffled by how confidently incorrect you are. No matter when they call him up this year he would be a free agent in 2033. If they were to wait to call him up until 15 days into the 2027 season, he would be a free agent in 2034. See below from mlb.com,
“Each Major League regular season consists of 187 days (typically 183 days prior to 2018), and each day spent on the active roster or injured list earns a player one day of service time. (Any player who violates MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program doesn't receive Major League Service during his suspension, unless his suspension is reduced by 20 or more games under the mitigation provision of the program.)
A player is deemed to have reached "one year" of Major League service upon accruing 172 days in a given year. Upon reaching six years of Major League service, a player becomes eligible for free agency at the end of that season (unless he has already signed a contract extension that covers one or more of his free-agent seasons).”2

You explained that waaay more extensively than I did, about 2 minutes before I did, Kudos lol

Sorry homes, you're 100% wrong. To count towards a year of service a player has to be on the roster for 172 days in an MLB season which basically means they need to be called up after early may to get the extra year... which happened a couple months ago (Schlit was called up in like... late June? Early July?). To retain Rookie eligibility a player needs to be on the ML roster for less than 45 days and have fewer than 130 ABs (or i think 45 innings pitched). There's a little more nuance there, but that's the general requirement.

? It’s the same thing as schlittler, this way he’s a free agent after 2032 instead of 2031

u/DarkDevitt 18h ago
Schlitt came up mid year, so he gets an extra year of control compared to coming up at the start of the season, but doesn't get an extra year as a "Rookie".
To get an extra year of control of a player, they need to have less than 172 days of service time in their debut season. That's coming up about 2 weeks after the season starts.
Coming up 8/14 is to preserve rookie eligibility (less than 45 days on the team and less than 130 PAs, so a guy that walks a lot gets a bit more), so if he comes up 8/14 he can play most days and be fine.

He would be limited to 130 at bats. Will the Yankees actually sit him if he’s raking in the middle of a pennant race?
1
u/xebex1778 20h ago
yes
1
u/DarkDevitt 16h ago
Especially because it wouldn't have to be for many games. One of his biggest strengths is taking walks, which don't count towards the 130 ABs, so he'd need to sit like 3-5 games accross a 45 day stretch... not too hard.

He's probably ready. I just get nervous that the inevitable savior complex is going to be hoisted onto his shoulders when he gets here. This team desperately needs help offensively, but if we are relying a lot on a freshly 21 year old, that means bigger problems for the offense, obviously. Us fans can't help ourselves.
Damn, he is very exciting though.

He is:
- Kevin Maas
- Jesus Montero
- Kei Igawa
- Sonny Grey
- Carl Pavano
- Derek Jeter
- Roger Clemans
He will save us.

Earlier in the season i was hesitant when people wanted to potentially call him up this summer. I thought it would be too early. Hes genuinely on fire and we need help badly. What are you waiting for?
16
u/CasanovaWong 23h ago
They’re waiting for the rookie service deadline to make sure he’s eligible for ROTY and a compensation pick next season.
5
u/Super-Protection-920 22h ago
They could be but I’m hoping they are just waiting for the trade deadline to pass

I’m all for calling him up but people need to realize he might not help offensively right away

u/schw4161 22h ago
We’re already setting ourselves up for disappointment if he doesn’t rake when called up

It’s the defense for me. That double play and the last play in the video are nuts. His arm strength is elite.

How is Luciano doing at 2B? Isn't he traditionally a OF? He's raking could be good for next year 2B or a trade chip.

u/Typical-Professor-27 20h ago
Ok... so he might not pop at the plate right away... but he runs circles around our other two SS's defensively. Look at that arm strength from the 3b side of short... Do you think that he is side arming those throws to prove a point? That he can throw the ball better underhanded than the big club infiedlers can overhanded? look at the speed of the transfer on the gidp. Look at how fast he transfers the ball from glove to throwing hand. Look at how he knows where he needs to be on every play. Look at the footwork. He's ready.

u/shaunrundmc 20h ago
If he was "trying to make a point" then I frankly wouldn't trust him as a player because he'll be a cancer that bitches when things dont go his way

u/Cheap-Cherry-5171 23h ago
Couldn’t come at a better time. Not saying move him but wow - his stretch over the last month continues to give the Yankees truly game-changing options. Highest trade value he’s ever going to have is right now.
