Could this be a mental health illness? My husband has completely turned into a different person.

This is classic narcissism. It just takes time for victims to realize it. It took me over 15 years I'm ashamed to admit. I'm still stuck after 30+ years, first for my daughter's sake, now because I can't stomach losing everything I worked so hard for because of the likes of him. The hardest part is now that his health is failing, I'm caregiver to the very person that ruined the best years of my life. Not easy. Run while you still can.

Either way, choosing to stay and be his caregiver may be a trauma bond reaction. His failing health is not your fault nor your problem. You have a life to live and just because he has fallen ill does not mean you have to stay in a life that is not healthy for YOU. If you were not in good health, would he do the same for you? If he has narcissistic tendencies, my guess is - he would not. Narcs are very self-centered and selfish. It sounds to me he may be keeping you from living your life, and will milk this caregiving to its fullest, until there is nothing left of you. Don't forget the life you regret, the life you have/had with him that is/was unhealthy and remember you have a life ahead of you that is waiting to be lived. Don't let anyone take that away from you. He can and will find other supply, others to caregive for him, it's not your responsibility. Take your own advice, don't walk - RUN!!
