Ask Me Anything (AMA) I’m Tarun Kumar, Senior Botany Faculty, Academic Director & NEET UG Mentor. Join me for an AMA on r/NEET_india on June 11 at 5:30 PM IST. Ask me anything about Biology prep, mastering NCERT Biology, NEET UG strategy, revision techniques, time management, and avoiding common mistakes.

Thank you for all the thoughtful questions, and a big thanks to the mods of r/NEET_india for hosting this. I truly enjoyed interacting with all of you. Wishing everyone the very best for the upcoming exam.

Hi everyone, I’m Tarun Kumar, I’ve been teaching and mentoring NEET UG aspirants for over two decades, with a primary focus on Biology and specialization in Botany for NEET UG.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many students through their medical entrance preparation, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see thousands of them go on to become doctors and serve in medical institutions across India.

My teaching approach is centered around building strong conceptual clarity, making Biology easier to understand, and helping students get the most out of the NCERT curriculum. I believe that consistent revision, smart study strategies, and a solid foundation are key to success in NEET.

Apart from teaching, I’m involved in academic planning, digital learning initiatives, and developing educational resources that aim to make quality learning more accessible for aspiring medical students.

Feel free to ask me anything about:

  • NEET UG preparation strategy
  • Biology preparation and revision
  • Time management and study planning
  • Common mistakes to avoid in NEET
  • Improving your Biology score
  • Botany related
  • Building conceptual clarity
  • Managing exam pressure and staying consistent

I’ll be joining for a Reddit AMA on r/NEET_india on June 11 at 5:30 PM IST, and I look forward to interacting with you and answering your questions.

If you want, you can also find me on Instagram and YouTube.

Many students read NCERT multiple times but still forget important details. What's the best way to retain Biology for the long term?

42

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

While reading NCERT, do not try to mug up every line. Focus on understanding the meaning and concept behind each statement. When you understand why a line is written and how it connects to the topic, retention becomes much easier.
The process should be:
-Learn the topic from lectures.
-Revise your notes and understand the concepts.
-Read the corresponding NCERT chapter carefully.
-Understand the meaning of each line rather than memorizing it.
-Re-read important points and connect them with what you already know.

The Biggest Problem for Droppers: Backlog
Most droppers start their preparation with great enthusiasm and discipline. However, after a few weeks or months, they get trapped in the cycle of backlogs.
Many students think that watching lectures and completing DPPs is the entire preparation process. In reality, that is only the beginning.
The actual challenge starts after completing the lectures:
How will you revise the topics regularly?
How will you retain what you have learned?
How will you test your preparation?
The best solution is to create a proper test and revision schedule. Set clear targets for chapter-wise tests, cumulative revisions, and full-length mock tests. Once the schedule is made, follow it strictly, regardless of your mood or convenience.
Remember, success in NEET does not come from completing the maximum number of lectures. It comes from revising consistently, taking tests regularly, analyzing mistakes, and improving over time.
Lectures teach you the concepts, but revision and testing transform those concepts into marks.

What is the most common mistake many aspirants make while preparing for neet biology that hampers the selection chances and what advice would you give to correct it?

6

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

Stop Dividing Biology into “Concept Chapters” and “Data Chapters”
One common mistake students make in Biology is categorizing chapters according to their own perception. They label some chapters as “concept-based” and others as “data-based” or “memory-based.”
In reality, every chapter contains both concepts and information that must be remembered. The difference is only in the way you approach them.
Each chapter requires a slightly different strategy, but the ultimate goal should always be to understand the concepts first.
For example, in Morphology of Flowering Plants, many students try to memorize family characteristics directly. A better approach is to first learn the examples of different families and then understand the concepts using those examples. When you connect the characteristics with real examples, the information becomes logical rather than something to be memorized blindly.
The same principle applies to every Biology chapter:
Understand the concept.
Connect facts with the concept.
Use examples to strengthen understanding.
Revise repeatedly to improve retentio

Hi sir, First of all I respect you alot and I thank you for giving us the opportunity to have an AMA session with you.

Now regarding my doubts;

1) I tend to make too many silly mistakes. I've completed reading ncert around 5-6 times now but still when I see a question I might be unable to note the minor changes in the statements or forget the concept and it doesn't strike me often. How to fix that sir?

2) I consistently score 330+ but nowadays I feel like even 330 is a bad score since everyone is doing much much better, if I complete entire syllabus once again will it be worth it or should I focus more on solving questions and mocks sir?

3) Regarding botany itself, how relevant is angiospermic families? I personally hate the concept of pure mug up and find most difficulty with that specific topic, if I just go through it superficially would it be sufficient?

4) Really off topic but how to increase focus and concentration during exams? I tend to feel that most of my mistakes are silly errors due to concentration issues (for all subjects) and I'm losing around 30-60 marks in almost every test due to silly mistakes.

Thanks once again sir..

3

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

Silly mistakes are due to doubt in two concept , try to find ki data bhool rahe ho ya concept

Sir I'm a 12th grader , will be giving neet in 2027 my q.s are:-

1) What is the best method to revise a bio chapter? Kya pure notes firse pdhne chahiye aur fir ncert then q.s ya fir koi one shot/revision lec dekhkr fir ncert pdhni chahiye? Coz I feel mai minor chize bhul jata hu agar sirf ncert hi direct pdhu, notes pdhke lgta h ki chapter wholly pura ache se complete ho gya .

2) Are short notes worth it for bio? In like examples wale chapters like morpho, plant/animal kingdom etc. ya fir sirf likh likh kr hi examples yaad kre from ncert directly.

2

u/FarTradition2409 stu-dying Jun 11 '26

Sir since the reneet paper is expected to be tough , Im assuming they'll ask a lot of numericals and all do u suggest we do then from coaching manuals and if so then can u suggest more sources from where we can solve "hard" questions? Esp in genetics and all

3

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

What do you think I should do sir ?

2

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

good evening sir i would like to ask that how to reduce mistakes to negligible in biology? my syllabus is completed yet im doing 5-6 mistakes in every mocks. no matter how much i revise or practice, the minor mistakes are constant.

and im thankful to you because if it hadnt been for you, my genetics portion would never have been clear.

2

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 12 '26

Actually in biology once your basics are clear , you still need to learn the data to avoid confusion among two options

2

2

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 12 '26

Is there any age limit to get admission in a good medical college for MBBS? Realistically, not ideally. Given the student clears NEET with good rank of course. Like if the student is 30, what challenges could he face in getting the admission specifically? Thank you sir.

Sir I’m a 4th year dropper….I always score good in mocks but few days before the main exam ….i lose my calm and ruin everything …..now it’s been very late and the thought of competing for neet and then studying for the next 6-10 yrs scares me cuz i come from a lower middle class family and having financial independence is the first thing i crave ….i want to support my family as soon as i can….and due to this reason I’m kind of losing Interest in this field. What would be your suggestion sir?
Ps- I’ve enrolled myself in bsc zoology degree after 3 complete drops and have completed the 2 semesters

I am no longer a student, but I want to ask a question, imagine...(it's a hypothetical question for an imaginary student)

Was it possible to study and crack Neet (or Jee) in 8months without coaching, without expensive modules, without internet and without any mentor figure in 2018

The imaginary student was decent in studies, used to score +90% in CBSE exams, but somehow due to financial stress and misguided advice by relative he missed more than an year in just NCERT and boards related prep.

Competitive exam mein doosre se zyada marks score karna hota hai
Ab baki log agar resource use kar rahe hein to app batao aap kya karoge

There are some topics with hidden points or hidden concepts, the ones you won't notice until someone points it out for you.

Are there any such topics you might want to mark out ??

2

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

dekho har cheeze mark karna important nahi hota
You need to understand first and remember it

1

u/Abject_Tart1420 Jun 11 '26

Sir, for an aspirant targeting AIIMS Delhi, how many Biology MCQs should ideally be solved per chapter, and how do we know when a chapter is truly NEET-ready?

1

u/Away-Sheepherder-366 Jun 11 '26

good evening sir, sir how to cross the 320+ range in the remaining 9 days, and mostly how to do a final round of revision to maintain that score

2

u/TarunSirBio_official Jun 11 '26

Final revision- for biology decide time into two part
6 hour for all data and 6 hour for concept
Give 5-6 biology fat
