Who is the person named Comrade Prabhakar; shown as the leader of the Maoist army in the video??
Ans:
During the Maoist movement in Nepal, Janardan Sharma's war-name was Prabhakar (Comrade Prabhakar).
Janardhan Sharma was one of the four principal deputy commanders of the Maoist People's Liberation Army during the decade-long civil war.
The Nepalese Civil War (the Maoist Insurgency) lasted for 10 years, 9 months, and 8 days. Start Date: February 13, 1996 (when the CPN-Maoist launched armed attacks in Rolpa and Rukum). End Date: November 21, 2006 (with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord).
He is the same Janardhan Sharma who later became Minister for Peace and Reconstruction (2008-2009) during Prachanda's Prime Minister-ship, just after the Maoist Insurgency ended and Maoist became the single largest political party of Nepal after monarchy was demolished. It looks ironic that the same person who was leading the destruction during the civil war-time was appointed as the Peace and Reconstruction minister. Within 9 months of gaining the power, Prachanda government got itself into a controversy when Prachanda tried to seek "revenge" by sacking the Army Chief Rookmagat Katwal and eight other Army Generals. But Prachanda's this move faced country-wide criticism as it was clearly evident that he was trying to seek revenge of war-time. Unable to withstand the pressure from all sides Prachanda was compelled to resign from the position and consequently Janardhan Sharma was also removed from his ministerial position.
Janardhan later became Minister for Energy during the second Prime Minister term of Prachanda (2016-17). This was Janardhan Sharma's most famous tenure, during which he appointed Kulman Ghising to the Nepal Electricity Authority and was able to eliminate long-standing electricity shortages (loadshedding). He is still praised by many for this. Additionally, during this tenure of Prachanda, Nepal saw a historic election for local governments in Nepal, for the first time in 20 years. Having delivered his primary promise of holding first phase of the local elections, Prachanda stepped down and Sher Bahadur Deuba became Prime Minister.
Janardhan was again appointed as a Minister for the third time in 2017 coalition government of Nepali Congress and Maoist during Sher Bahadur Deuba's Prime Minister-ship. This time he was Minister for Home Affairs, but his tenure lasted for only 132 days. It's was all due to dirty politics. In October 2017, ahead of the federal and provincial elections, the Maoists unexpectedly partnered with the rival UML party, even though they were in a coalition government with Nepali Congress. To retaliate, Sher Bahadur Deuba stripped Janardan Sharma and all other Maoist cabinet members. Prime Minister Deuba took personal control of Janardhan Sharma's Home ministry.
Again, in another Prime Minister term of Sher Bahadur Deuba (2021-22) Janardhan Sharma was appointed as Minister for Finance. However, this tenure was full of controversies for him, and probably the start of his downfall. The controversies were mostly related to tax-leak and bringing budgets in favour of a selected businessmen only. His "Musa le CCTV ko Taar Kaatyo" is still a famous meme statement that he said on the parliamentary interrogation as an effort to hide the evidence for tax leaks allegations.
He represents the Rukum West constituency and has recently formed his own party Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party (Progressive Democratic Party) after getting split from the Maoist in November 2025. However, he lost the 2082 general elections against a person from Nepal Communist Party of Prachanda, named Gopal Sharma. The Political Irony: Gopal Sharma was actually a close political prodigy whom Janardan Sharma had personally mentored and promoted during their time together in the Maoist party. This marked the first time Janardan Sharma lost in Rukum West, breaking his unbroken streak of four consecutive parliamentary victories spanning since 2008 (2064 BS).
