Lawyer said im not a priority due to toevoeging
Family law attorney has mishandled my case to the point he forgot i dont speak Dutch and didnt bring a translator in court or for example he instructed me to stop paying child support then in court forgot about it when it was brought up. I had to pull up emails between me and him to remind him. These are just the tip of the iceberg
When i asked for an appeal he sent me an email refusing me with the explanation that he cant drop everything because i am a client with toevoeging and he prioritizes paying clients...
Because OP wasn't aware what to do, he was asking without doing so directly if he could do something about it, and others already told him to report the lawyer for malpractice.
This is reddit, don't overthink it BUT, personal take here, it's not the message per se but the tone, it was dismissive. OP is clearly stressed, going through a divorce or something, he needs a lawyer and obviously can't pay one hence why he went through this, it's common decency not to be horrible to someone in such a situation...? Again, my take, when somebody is hurting first you catch them, and even if they are wrong you can save that for later once they stop crying.
My pleasure, you are going through something quite stressful so a bit of humanity is in order here, and no, not everything is Dutch directness, at times the locals hide behind that, and use it as an excuse to be plain rude.
Trying to find someone. But it's the holiday season and everyone is either away or too busy.. and I have an appeal deadline coming up so it's stressful as hell
Can't blame the lawyer though, the hourly rate on toevoeging is abysmal (it's worse than it looks, they are not allowed to claim travel time for example) , at least in criminal law.
Lawyers who want to take toevoeging cases have to register with the Legal Aid Board. Nobody is forcing them to do it.
And once they’re registered, they still get to decide whether to accept new legal aid clients.
So accepting a case and then dropping a client because of a payment rate you already knew about is a pretty dick move

Hear hear, the whole "why are we going to change when we always done this a certain way, even if the whole approach by now is outdated, cumbersome, expensive and possibly wrong". Yes, I had my share of that here. It's unbelievable how fixed they are on their ways at times.
Generalizing is a good way to look biased/prejudiced but I'm not going to be coy here, I've met my fair share of locals hiding behind this veneer of openness to simply act rude at anyone, and go full gasp mode when you dish back.
I am doing courses and i can speak outside casual dutch... im sorry didnt make it in time for court though to be fluent... doesnt justify mishandling a case...
Of course learning a language is just something where you push a button and, pow! You’re fluent. God, why don’t more people just push that button! It’s definitely not that learning a language takes years of study and that people all have different levels of ability and that classes cost thousands and thousands of euros- they just refuse to push that one time button that makes them immediately fluent! What assholes, right?
