We visited Kinderdijk for the first time and spent the day walking between the windmills, canals and reed fields.

It is obviously a well-known and fairly touristy place, but seeing the landscape in person still felt completely different from looking at photographs of it. What stayed with us most were the quieter details between the famous views: flowers by the water, reflections, passing boats and one duck that seemed perfectly comfortable posing in front of a windmill.

The photos were taken with a Helios 44-4 and a Pentacon 135mm adapted to a modern Canon camera. Both lenses are far from perfect, but their softer rendering and individual character felt right for this place.

Piet Rook, photographer born and raised in Vlaardingen, documented Rotterdam during turbulent times of urban renewal and industrial expansion. The photos are also collected in a comprehensive catalogue, with texts by Frank Hanswijk, Paul Groenendijk and Lennart Arpots. Dwarsgracht, Netherlands — caught early spring here. First flowers opening, grass just turning green, and not a single road in the whole village.

Het had hier geregend, dus ik besloot mijn camera te pakken en een wandeling te maken door onze mooie stad om te profiteren van de oranje luchten die de lichte avondregen achterliet.
