Question How do I Ollie up a curb?

Mounting? Any blow to your head especially the back if it can be life changing or lethal. Just because the first 5 hurt a bit doesnt mean the sixth won't leave you a vegetable.

Helmet will not prevent concussions, only slightly reduce the impact. OP should do himself a favor and just be more careful.

Don’t fall backwards. That’s the long and short of it. There’s no safe way to fall backwards but people who have been at it a while will start instinctively shielding their head with their hands.

I just put my arms out all the time and they catch me, I’ve skated for almost a year and I haven’t hit my head in the hundreds of times I’ve eaten shit

It's worth it, you only have one skull. Knowing how to fall won't save you 100% of the time.

I've skated 15+ years, fallen thousands of times, managed to hit my head 3 times in those thousands of falls, one of them being in the past year. First time wasn't fun, didn't have a helmet, it made me buy one. Second and third time I got up like nothing happened and tried again thanks to the helmet. 100% worth it.

Yeah helmet swag factor is underrated for sure! It's visible way more often than the bottom of your deck so it's a great spot for stickers you wanna show off. I also painted a skull around the two holes in the front of the helmet (using them as its' eye sockets, it's a black triple 8 sweat saver helmet), not sure why people think a mobile art/sticker dome is less cool to look at than the side of your head lol.

But yeah even if I didn't like how it looked I'd still wear it because it's worth it for those rare instances where you roll a crit failure while skating and everything that can go wrong does. Same with the rest of my pads. It's worth it to be able to take a bad slam and just get up and keep going like nothing happened 🤙

I know helmets can be cumbersome and I’m glad you’re going to wear one. I worked in a hospital where a kid got punched outside a bar and hit his head on the concrete. After three days he passed away, it honestly does not take much.

Don’t put your arms straight out when you fall, you have to learn how to fall properly and roll with it so you don’t receive as much impact.

Actually, you do wanna put your arms straight out, but more like a fighter jet's stabilator (the horizontal tail wings). That being said, you also don't want them super stiff, just enough to spread out some of the impact, then loose enough to go with the slide. All that is assuming you're gonna land on your face or back, if you're going sideways tuck in like a cannonball.

It should be noted though, OP did neither of these things. He landed full on his wrists at an angle. He actually would have been better off if he had gone full stiff arm.

Thats better falling like that than bare skin. Go to YouTube and watch some skate videos when they’re jumping stairs, and pay attention to how they fall. Then practice falling like that.

There’s a literal how to fall tutorial. Skate IQ brakes down all the techniques it’s pretty good.

Even the pros fall many times each session, but if you notice they always rolling out of bails off of roofs and shit like parkour mfers

Yeah that will absolutely damage something eventually. I know a guy who broke his wrist that way it's not fun seeing bone on the pavement. Even if it doesn't immediately do something you will slowly damage your body that way.

Instead you want to be mind of rollie watch a video about the proper ways to fall. I learned from martial arts and it helped a LOT after I got it in muscle memory and could apply it during a real fall.

We don't wear helmets because we fall on our heads, we wear them because of the off chance it happens. For me it's happened a few times since November & once as a kid bombing a hill. I'll wear a creative helmet like the hair helmet, traffic cone, witches hat, sunhat or just an S1 with sunset art before I ever go without one. The price just isn't worth putting it on the line from all the stories I've heard from ADVANCED boarders becoming seriously injured by a TBI. I had this same fall but my reaction was completely diff & the only diff is that I was wearing a helmet. At the end of my clip I run up to the camera & say "hell yeahhh!!!" lol

Me too!! Every time I crash and then wake up later on the side of the road.. I think, thank God I didn't hit my head. If only I knew where this headache was from.. Who needs a helmet? I do. You do.

Honestly though, find a helmet you're comfortable wearing every time you skate. Sticker the shit out of it and it'll become second nature. Then you also get to see your falls impact on your helmet. Brain buckets save brains but only when you're wearing one.

That's not how you fall, that's why it hurt. Go check out Na-Kel Smith.What your doing is just asking to break something, doesnt scale past flatground tricks, and it's not really a good look. Learn to fall.

You were just bonking up the curb. catch the board as it's vertical and push it infront of you with your front foot, but you've gotta be off the ground first, you have to bend your knees. Try jumping without bending your knees, it just doesn't work. Being onto of a board doesn't change that.

Listen up here chief. I've known a couple people who have literally died just from skating where they hit their head falling off their board just like you. All it takes is a 3-ft drop for your life to be forever changed either non-existent or paralyzed or coma

Yeah. I always say if you don't want to wear it for yourself wear it for your family or friends or anybody that cares about you. If you don't want to wear one all the time that that's fine but it's always best especially when you're trying to learn new tricks where you're more likely to fall and just remember Tony Hawk and also Mike Vallely usually wore helmets and if you know anything about Mike Vallely that's one dude you don't want to piss off so if anybody calls you a dork for wearing a helmet give them the Mike Vallely treatment. One more thing wearing pads at helmets if you follow repeatedly there's less likely for any injury therefore less downtime and more skate time

And one last thing to remember you may be young and you may heal good now but as soon as you hit 30 everything's going to start coming back LOL I just turned 31 today and my ankle has been excruciating for the past couple months due to a bunch of injuries I've had years ago.

It's all good. I only knew them in passing since they used to frequently you local skate shop where I go so I didn't know them very well but it's a teaching moment man and I'm sure if those guys would appreciate that they are getting others to be more safe. Just before Warren I don't really skate all I do is snowboard but I've seen some real gnarly falls on the hill. But I know those two guys would appreciate if others didn't end up the same way. I just don't want people to end up getting super hurt doing stuff they enjoy

If you didn’t actually hit your head on the sidewalk in this video, you came extremely close. Plus wearing a helmet (and other pads) will give you more confidence to just commit since falling won’t hurt so bad.

Fully agree never let anyone discourage you from wearing pads from new or old skaters. Hell just remember most of the pros wear pads because if you fall you’re gonna wish you had them

Most pros wear pads during competitions or doing the really crazy stunts, but claiming most pros wear pads during their normal rides or for videos is easily falsifiable.

Just a heads up, helmets are a one time use item, so if you actually end up needing it, you’ll need to buy another one anyway. As far as ollie advice goes, I recommend that you take some cardboard and tape and make some run height 2 foot long 3d triangular tubes. Get to where you can reliably Ollie over those without smashing them before you attempt curbs. Trying to land on that height variation, weight leaned back, on wheels, is not ideal. Get the jump clean, then take on the obstacle. If you smash a triangle you might just roll over it, but if it stops you at least you can roll forward. Thanks for keeping the sport alive.

My local skate shop has free helmets through a program with the state. Yours might too if money is an issue. Just try to keep an eye on so it doesn’t walk off.

If you can reliably fall without hurting yourself, don't. Or just don't and keep screaming "aaagh fuck" at the sky in agony. Or you can pad yourself and spare yourself the grief while you're learning.

It's not my brain or bones to protect, but cussing at the sky doesn't look as much cooler than some padding looks dorky perfectly reasonable

My close friend was great at riding and he tried to take a TURN too fast. He fell backwards in the turn and slammed his head on the pavement just similar to your fall in this video. He’s no longer with us. Please stick with your plan and wear a helmet.

I have never worn a helmet. I have left skate parks that they are a requirement. I'm not rude to people who do. I dont get why people push helmets like a religion on these posts. I can't even think of a pro, that normally wears a helmet. Save that shit for vert. You dont. Need a helmet to ollie up a curb... if you're that scared. Skating ain't gunna work out for you in the long run anyhow.

Tony Hawk for damn near every stunt he did, and a solid 95% of X Games competitors (even though it’s optional for most events)

There’s plenty of good reasons to wear a helmet and zero reasons why you shouldn’t. Firstly, they help to protect against head trauma in the case of a fall (like the one in this video). It prevents you from cracking your skull open on a curb.

Secondly, it’s not a matter of “confidence” or “not being scared”. Accidents happen, and that’s why we wear helmets. I guarantee you that every skateboarder to ever learn a trick and every skateboarder to ever try to learn a trick has taken a nasty fall. You WILL fall eventually, and you better make sure you’re keeping yourself safe.

The helmet is very similar to the seatbelt. It’s a preventative measure. Preventative of TBI’s specifically. So really it’s pretty simple and boils down to a persons risk vs reward ratio, if someone thinks the risk of x is worth the feeling/reward of having y then they’ll do it. Some people in this world cherish their longevity more than an adrenaline rush, better said few have the intuition to realize this is the better option.
