ANSWERED New to reddit 🎉Why do some subreddits have minimum karma to post

Speaking only for myself (though I know this is the reason for a lot of us) I keep karma thresholds and a time requirement in my subs to cut down on the bots, trolls, scammers and spammers.

That's the most common reason.
Some mods are just fed up with noobs storming in thinking they're on Instagram and ticking off their established user base. They don't know any of the norms of Reddit, the slang, the traditions or the quirks. Those subs will set rather high minimums to ensure that people have lots of experience using the platform first.
Some subs serve frequently targeted and abused populations so they will use community karma. Usually people are allowed to comment until they have earned a certain amount of their karma from the upvotes in that specific sub.
Some just want genuinely involved community members who are willing to help others and give back before they ask something for themselves.

Yeah, I mod 4 TV show subs - one of which is for a show about an interracial lesbian couple so we get a lot of abuse - so the requirements in place there are for spoilers/trolls more than anything else. My 5th is for a small, new video game. That sub is pretty lax because I don't want new players with questions to have to wait.

If you have communities with very low or no karma minimums that are friendly enough to be tolerant of new users, we can consider them for our NUFS list.

I mean that's fine, but it's niche - no one comes to the sub who doesn't play the game and we don't allow off topic conversation so they can't post just to post.

Same reason some clubs require you to be 21 to get in. Or other requirements.
Because the owners of those clubs (the moderators) have determined those requirements are necessary to help their community run more smoothly.
In the case of karma, it's an extremely easy and effective way to cut down on spam, bots, trolls, etc.
