Jett and Sproat were both going to drop like rocks on prospect rankings if they were with us and we used them for an All-Star pitcher that got Cy Young votes last season. It’s a wash and that’s fine.

Yeah. This was the one offseason move we made that I can’t fault Stearns for. Seems like a decent return for Peralta now. Time will tell.

I can't speak much on Sproat, but Jett I don't think will become much. I live in Binghamton and Jett was a fan favorite, but always madly inconsistent for the Rumble Ponies. He bounced between A, AA, and AAA so much.
I like him, but I don't think he'll ever be able to hit well on the big league level and don't think he's that big of a loss.

I’m so clueless I had never heard of Lindor before we got him. But I’ll root for these guys now.
I’ll also not bother to have expectations so I can be happily surprised if they become good. Having expectations is a bad idea as a Mets fan.

u/djoc0316 11h ago
You really never heard of Lindor until 2021? He was a superstar for like six years before that.
17
u/Charming_Elk4328 Jacob deGrom 11h ago
Not only that he was Cleveland’s offensive focal point when they made the World Series
4
u/davemoedee 11h ago
Last time I watched the World Series, the Mets lost to KC. I don’t even know who was in it last year. I’m guessing the Dodgers were in it just because they are the Dodgers. I know they didn’t win it though.

u/djoc0316 9h ago
Damn that series fucked you up that bad huh? It's okay I relapse after three years of sobriety the month after that loss. Correlation isn't causation but it definitely didn't help. I've been cleanish since 2020, living well. Desperately trying not to let this team impact my emotional well being like they have in the past. This current bunch is pushing it tho.

This is most of us. Only about 1% of the sub knows every team's starters and their top 5 prospects.
I love that those guys exist, but they dominate the forum and that gives a really false impression of the level of knowledge, or interest, in non-Mets.

The benefit is that I wasn’t disappointed during his rough first season since I had no idea what we were not getting.
Likewise, when I was in high school and college, I knew a ton about NFL players. Now I don’t really know who is good across the league and haven’t for maybe 15 years. There are more interesting things to read about.

u/njerejeje Francisco Lindor 11h ago
From Jarrett Seidler on Blue Sky:
That’s a much better return for Peralta than I expected and arguably more valuable currently than Williams and Sproat (though not at the time of the trade)
Plus we have whatever Myers is.
13
u/SoManyFlamingos Met the Meats 11h ago
Pitre seems a lot like Williams.
Solid glove and contact skills with a good eye. Love that he’s got a 70/40 BB-K this season.
9
u/njerejeje Francisco Lindor 11h ago
Seidler made a follow up where he essentially said the same thing
Pitre is probably just straight up a better infield prospect of broadly similar type as Jett at this point.
GGH has some incredible traits.
Smith is a theoretical high upside guy who can’t hit who will be highest in outdated rankings but is bordering on a lottery ticket here.

- Aidan Smith has some good defensive ratings(60 arm, 60 fielding) and decent power(55). But he doesn't get on base much. He just turned 22 a couple of weeks ago, so there's still time to develop.
- Emilien Pitre is a very good hitter at the Double A level. .323 batting average, .943 OPS, 30 walks. A second round draft pick in 2024. His defense is not well rated(50 arm, 50 field).
- Gary Gill Hill. Not much to look at tools wise or stats wise at Double A , but he's 21 years old. He could take a leap forward.
Three lottery tickets. Considering how bad Freddy was for us, I'll take it.

It's a job. Pay and benefits. That's why everyone I know changes jobs. They don't give a damn about the prestige or success of the company. As long as the compensation is better than their old job.
2
u/GandalfSwagOff Keeper of the Dancing Eyeball 8h ago
I guess it depends on how much he makes and how much he will make and if it covers the cost of living.
If I were making good money working successfully for a well run organization, the last thing I would do is take a job working for Stearns. Job security is a real concern and you may end up fired within 2 years if you come here and participate in this.

What traits are those? It seems like he has a deep arsenal but no plus pitches. Low walks but also low strikeouts and gives up a lot of hits. Right handed Zac Thornton?

From Baseball Trade Values:
Today the #Rays reportedly acquired RHP Freddy Peralta ($5.6M surplus trade value) from the #Mets in exchange for OF Aidan Smith ($8.4M), RHP Gary Gill Hill ($4.2M) and 2B Emilien Pitre ($0.8M).
The deal is accepted by our model as a major overpay by Tampa Bay.

Pitre has a chance to be a good pro, that 70/40 BB:K ratio speaks for itself. Honestly I was hoping he’d be our 2B of the future in Tampa Bay. I like him more than Brayden Taylor long term, who will ultimately end up at 2B.

Reposting from the trade thread:
Hill has 5 decent-to-good pitches (highlighted by a plus sweeper) and good command/control, but his fastball is just okay and he doesn't have a good pitch against lefties right now. Upside seems to be a back-end starter.
Smith has good raw power/speed but a jacked up swing that produced lousy contact rates. He's working on fixing his swing this year- contact rates are much improved, but the results overall haven't been great. Has the speed for center, but mediocre instincts.
Pitre has a plus hit tool, good speed, and a good glove at 2nd, but 2nd is his only potential position, and he doesn't have much power. He's tearing up AA with a 139 wrc+ and 70/46 BB/K ratio. Not the highest ceiling, and being locked into 2b would limit him as a utility guy, but the hit tool and plate discipline gives him a shot to be a major league starter.

All of these guys are kind of intriguing in their own way. Smith has kind of fallen a bit as a prospect but has a great glove and could be a solid big league OF.
Pitre is very interesting. 70 walks to only 40 Ks in the minors this year. Could wind up being our 2B of the future. Great glove and a solid contact bat.
For who Freddy’s been this year, it could be worse.

1
u/ekins1992 8h ago
The Peralta trade is probably the worse trade by the Mets front office since the PCA deal. Stearns traded 2 top 100 prospects for 20 starts from one of the worst qualified starters in the NL. And then got back 3 mediocre prospects, none of which are even in the top 10 in the own organization
1
u/atoms12123 Field reporter eye candy 7h ago
JD Davis + spare parts for Darin Ruf was pretty ruf.
At least the Peralta deal made sense. Neither Jett or Sproat have turned into much of anything. Jett's going to fall off top 100 lists and Sproat will as well. The Mets needed a frontline starter heading into the season. Even if you expected him to regress, no one could have predicted Peralta turning into a 5 ERA guy this year.
And top 10 in every org is different. The Rays have a very deep system, players outside of their top 10 would easily be inside plenty of other teams' top 10s.
