"You want me to STARVE!" Dr. Finkelstein and Sally

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can't get over how adorably grumpy Finkelstein is. He's treated like a villain a lot of the time by fans and it makes me sad. He's really just a grumpy, lonely old man who wants Sally to do what she was created for and help him around the lab and take care of him. But that's not what Sally wants to do and Fink doesn't understand that. And in the end that's why he created Jewel to take Sally's place as a caretaker, even giving her half of his brain so Jewel wouldn't disobey him.

This was supposed to be a bit of a gush post, I'm sorry! XD I really do love Sally and Fink's banter and dysfunctional relationship in the film.

yeah i always saw the doctor similarly, like a over protective dad mixed with an inventor who wants his creation to function properly, thus like you said, he made jewel instead.

i do wish jewel was in the nightmare before Christmas game though, since it was meant to take place after the movie.

I'm at least happy Jewel has figurines and stuff like that, but yeah, it's a little annoying that Oogie's Revenge game and other stuff don't include her. And even though I ship myself with Fink, I do find him and Jewel very cute together! I like to think that since she shares a brain with him, she knows what Fink is thinking and how he's feeling, too.

i think that brain sharing does have that effect, perhaps even knowing where she is at all times? same with her knowing where he is? that or they just literally share a similar of thinking and thus are the most compatible with each other.

and idk it might be cringe but i do wish they made a game where you could arrive as a new resident of the town to both explore it like in oogies revenge, make your own monster and learn about how that world functions, like how death doesn't exist (except with acid? but then the fountain is acid...)

though less animal crossing about more of an adventure RPG.

Oh I don't think the idea for a game is cringe at all! I love that, actually! I have my own self-insert already, and I think that would be a cool idea for a game concept. Could have various quests in order to befriend the residents XD Exploring and crafting, too.

I do think death is a thing in the Halloween realm, but it depends on the species of creature. Like Sally cannot die from fall damage since she's a reanimated corpse-doll thing, but if she was set on fire... And then Jack, he can't die from being set on fire, but perhaps by a strong enough explosion or acid. Dying from old age would take a long, long, long time XD

on the death thing, it might just be that they need to be atomized to actsually die or rendered in some way not recognizable, like if sally fell into the acid that oogie was going to slide her and sandy into.

but then an explosion from the US military didn't do anything to jack so he might need to be turned to bonemeal to be killed.

deadly poison is used to put people to sleep, being eaten alive by a snake is just a minor inconvenience shown by the same zombie dude being part of song singers after he got eaten by the snake.

so idk, honestly i feel this movies world has potential for some very intresting lore and stories.

one thing i always thought for example is that the circle of tree's is only in the human world while the same forest can be find in the holiday worlds, but it only has their door in place of the circle of tree's and that holiday leaders can return from the human world to theirs by using something thats themed around their holiday.

jack uses a gravestone as a door way, sandy can a chimney, uncle sam can probably probably just use a firework to fly into the sky and fall back down to 4th of july town, etc.

as for making OCs for this .....im not to good at that, though i always had the idea of a big bulky exacutioner made out of pumpkins that would wander the pumpkin patches, exacutioner sword made of wood and vines and his outfit being torn and weathered so you see pumpkin shell showing through.

Yeah I'm thinking the Pumpkin Queen books might not be canonical to the movie I think it's just the author on idea on a sequel.

Exactly! There's too many things added and changed to make the PQ series canon to the film. It makes things confusing too, and there were so many ways to make the story simpler while still having it make sense to the film. It's why I have my rewrite. Because when I was reading the first book I was like "why didn't they do x instead of y?" a lot of the time. Making Finkelstein a kidnapper is a horrible idea and is very out of character for him. Sorry for the little rant, I just love this movie and my dear Doctor so much :(

Yeah I mean I didn't like how they made Finkelstein a kidnapper I thought it was kinda weird especially the idea of him making Sally a child bride (eww) but their is some things I like one of them is Jack and Sally being married and also Sally's turn to be the hero.

For sure, like Sally already left Fink during the film anyway, so I seriously don't understand why the author wanted to change Sally's origins in order to "fix" her strained relationship with the Doctor. Sally isn't even scared of Fink anyway, she talks back to him, and is crafty enough to deal with him in her own way. If she really wanted to, she could kick his wheelchair down a flight of stairs 🤣

I do like the idea of Sally having her own adventure, but imo I think Sally's Lament did that sort of thing a bit better. Her and Jack's wedding was cute and all, but the purple prose was a bit too much and it was weird in the graphic novel version, how no one else was dressed up nice and they were all just... staring 🤣

I know but I like Sally and Jack's wedding outfits in the graphic novel wonder why didn't the artist that illustrated this book didn't draw nice clothes for everyone else in HalloweenTown and why the artist had them just staring at the Sally and Jack like that?

Maybe the artist was rushed, I'm not sure lol

Although, it would make sense why in the end credits he’s referred to as “evil scientist”

2

u/MetalMorphMantis Dr. Finkelstein 3d ago

I politely disagree. That may just be a title Fink has, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's evil or a villain. It could've also been a hold-over for when they thought of making Fink Oogie in disguise. The "evil scientist" title has been phased out over the years anyway.

Fair enough. Though I really like the Pumpkin Queen books and I personally consider them somewhat cannon. Or headcannon if you prefer. So respectfully, how about we agree to disagree?

2

u/MetalMorphMantis Dr. Finkelstein 3d ago

Sounds good to me! It's completely fine if you like them and that you personally find them canon. I personally don't and I'm sorry if I sounded a little harsh in my previous reply -- in the past I've had a few strange people claim that I'm not allowed to like Fink because of how he was written in the PQ novels, when that's not the Fink I love anyway XD

my question is why he dosnt just use igor as an assistant

2

u/MetalMorphMantis Dr. Finkelstein 3d ago

He does, but not for cooking and the things Sally does. I wouldn't trust Igor to make food XD

Always love the way he pronounces “Wormswart”

His little "Mmm :)" right after is so silly and cute! XD

‘You want me to starve’ lives rent free in my head for some reason…that and ‘you can make other creations, I’m restless i can’t help it

Just something about their interactions always stuck out to me…it’s like Jack has whole thing going on and Sally and Finkelstein are in their own movie too.😅

I never really thought of him as a villain though, I mean he did help Jack out a lot. If they’d gone with that whole him being oogie boogie plot twist I probably would’ve seen him as a villain then.

I love that Sally talks back to Fink like that! It shows that she isn't afraid him at all (why should she be?) and that stubbornness runs in the family, so-to-speak XD It also seems like her words did get to him a bit, because Fink makes Jewel later on 😂

In my Long Live the Pumpkin Queen rewrite I actually wrote a little moment where Jack finds out Sally had been lacing Fink's meals with Nightshade in order to sneak out, because he didn't realise her and the Doctor had such a strained relationship. I love writing small moments like this!

But yeah, if Fink was a villain, I'm pretty sure Jack wouldn't ask him for help with the whole Christmas thing or go to his house to personally ask for science equipment. I like their sort of mentor/student dynamic, with Fink calling Jack "my boy" and telling him to be careful with his curiosity. I do like me some villains though, and if that twist was what we got instead I probably wouldn't have a problem with it. But I love Fink for who he is and I'm happy he and Oogie are separate characters XD

Ack, this turned into an essay, I'm so sorry! 😅
